Second Sunday of Lent February 21, 2016 Announcements Today s Services and Fellowship Today we welcome retired pastor, Rev. Malcolm Steinburg who will bring us God s message. On this second Sunday of Lent, we lay before the cross today the nails with which we pierced the hands and feet of God s Son. Nails are usually used for construction. We used these nails, however, for destruction. They forever symbolize our attempt to destroy God s true temple. May God bless this service as we experience his love and grace through his Word and Spirit and through community. Upcoming Services and Fellowship Feb. 28 Lent #3-10AM Nomination Sunday. Pastor Adam Veenstra will lead worship. Mar. 06 Lent #4 10AM Classical appointment: Rev. Martin Spoelstra, pastor of Discovery Church in Bowmanville, will lead us in worship and communion. Mar. 09 7PM Congregational meeting Mar. 13 Lent #5 10AM Classical appointment: Rev. John Wildeboer, pastor of Rehoboth CRC in Bowmanville, will lead. Mar. 20 Palm Sunday 10AM Rev. Nick Cornelisse will lead. Mar AM - City-wide Good Friday service at Kingston Gospel Temple. Mar. 27 Easter Sunday 10AM Rev. Nick Cornelisse will lead. Announcements Prayers of God s People As a church family we celebrate the following birthdays this week: Johanna P. (today, Feb.21), Nathan N. (Feb.23), Truus T. (Feb.24), and Peyton M. (Feb.27). Pray for members and friends struggling with various health concerns, treatments or healing through recent surgeries: Martha D., Aartje H., Wilma & Paul K., Pete M. (Wilma s brother), and Nikki O. Please keep Piet B. in prayer as he awaits an opening in a Kingston area nursing home. Piet really appreciates visitors but please keep it short since he tires quickly. Also, keep Ann B. (Piet s daughter) and her siblings in prayer as they care for him. We continue to lift up Marion K. in prayer and ask that God will provide strength for all that she is going through.

2 Marion s next treatments will be Feb. 25 th and Mar. 17 th. Pray the treatments will kill the cancer cells, and side affects be minimal. We continue to pray for strength and healing as Victor S. recuperates from a respiratory infection. Please pray for both Jerry and Hetty V. as Jerry goes through cancer treatments. We pray the treatments will kill the cancer cells and that side effects will be minimal. We lift up in prayer Gavin V., 17 year old grandson to Peter & Winda. Gavin will begin chemo and radiation treatments for colon cancer. May God provide the V. family with strength during this difficult time. Keep the Pastor Search Committee in prayer as they search for the pastor whom God has planned to come. Please continue to pray for the Bosma Family, the judicial proceedings, the accused and all those affected by Tim s death and the trial. We pray for those confined to their homes or nursing homes: Leo B., Arnold B. (Annie s father), Aart E., Johanna M., Ina V. and Henry Y. *** For those who have a prayer request, please contact a member of the Prayer team or an Elder. Please contact the church office if you wish to receive a pastoral visit (elder or pastor) *** First s News & Activities Nomination Sunday - Council has designated February 28 as Nomination Sunday. On that day the congregation will have an opportunity/responsibility to nominate members for the office of Elder and Deacon. Until then, we ask the congregation to commit to praying for God s leading in the selection of Elders and Deacons. We also ask the congregation to commit to giving thought to names of those qualified to serve in the office of Deacon or Elder. The following members of Council will be finishing their 3 year terms: Elder: Rick K., Elizabeth W., John B. Deacon: Joe W., Bernie S. Coat Exchange: I have a coat, that I think was switched at church, and it is not mine. If you have a mauve short coat, same style and size as mine (Cleo medium), then I have your maroon coat. Can we switch back? Please contact Gertie M. Thank you. Council News: There will be a congregational meeting on Wednesday March 9 th. The agenda will include a review of the 2015 financials, approval of the budget for 2016, and a discussion of results of the Congregational meeting of Jan 24, as well as other documents that have been presented over the past year. Council will send out an information package in advance of this meeting. The minutes of the January 24 th congregational meeting have been ed out and distributed via the mailboxes for those who do not have . Join us in Planning our Worship - We are searching for those who would consider the opportunity to serve in our church and have a desire to be involved in Christ centred ministry. As we are currently without a pastor, the workload of the Worship Committee requires additional committee members who are willing to join us in planning, creating, evaluating and imagining worship services. This is a wonderful opportunity to serve in your church and be involved in Christ centred ministry. Please speak to any of us for more information - Rob (chair), Didy, and Erica. 3 Website Reno: The church website is undergoing a renovation! We are in need of up to date pictures for the website of the building, ministries, outreach and events. (Due to privacy issues, no pictures of children or children's ministries please.) For our March 5th community opportunity with KHBH, we will be at 235 Conacher Drive where we will be working on replacing the flooring. To be a part of this opportunity, please connect with one of the Outreach Team members. Craft Group: Do you have a hobby you like working on and want a little company too? Maybe you're knitting hats for our new Syrian neighbors or finishing up handmade gifts or even making something just for fun. Bring whatever you are working on to the next craft night Thursday, Feb. 25 th, at 7:00pm. Join us in the fish bowl room downstairs for some creative time and social time too. If you don't have a hobby but want some social time that is fine; you're welcome to join us! (Although we might try to teach you to knit...) Attention Youth! Quinte League Youth Service In Belleville: Maranatha Youth would like to invite all area teens to join us for a Youth Service on Sun, March 6th. Plan to join us in the afternoon for some fun and games, followed by dinner -- more details to follow in next week's bulletin announcement. The service will begin at 7pm. This event will feature the work of students including the processes and the products of their formational learning experiences. The event will provide the community with a picture of deep, engaged student learning across grades and throughout the year. Citizens for Public Justice EVENT Climate Action after Paris: Next steps for faith communities --At international climate negotiations (COP21) last December, world leaders drafted "The Paris Agreement." Citizens for Public Justice is hosting an event to explore the significance of this agreement and how faith communities can move

5 forward on climate issues. Dennis Gruending will interview Mardi Tindal (leader of The United Church delegation to COP21) regarding her experience of COP21. Following time for questions, Karri Munn-Venn (Citizens for Public Justice), Graham Saul (Ecology Ottawa), and Tony Clarke (The Polaris Institute), will lead a discussion of next steps for Canadian communities of faith.
