1 LIVING NEW LIFE the Chronicle Crestwood Church July 2017 Richmond & Midlothian, Virginia The Pastor s Pen Dear Crestwood Congregation and Family: When we think about summer, most of us think about a slower pace. But at Crestwood, the pace isn t necessarily slower, it just shifts to involve other things. We have much to celebrate as ministry rolls on in meaningful ways, even if Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights don t carry the exact same routine. As you read, offer some prayers for these upcoming summer ministries to be fruitful. Over 60 women are participating in two Bible studies offered this summer. The morning study includes ministry to fifty children as well. There is a hunger for biblical teaching and discipleship at Crestwood for which I am grateful to God. Thank you to Crestwood volunteers providing both teaching and children s ministry - pray for them and the growth of those they lead! Over 25 men gathered for the first of a series of men s get togethers this summer where men will explore the dynamics of following Jesus in their particular roles as men. The interest in coming together reflects a healthy desire for men to be together and encourage one another to be faithful and steady in a shifting world. Pray for these men to grow in godliness and friendship. On July 8th we begin another week of Vacation Bible School ministry, engaging 125 children for a week of gospel teaching. We look to impact our community through this network of relationships. Pray for tireless workers and for fountains of God s grace to soak our children and staff. Recreation Ministry has already completed one weeklong basketball camp. One day soccer clinics as well as a volleyball camp and another basketball camp In This Issue... will fill the summer, bringing over 100 young people into our sphere of influence via sports. Pray that these opportunities P. 2 Combined Worship & Congregational will reach people with little interest in Christ and draw them Meeting, July 16th nearer to himself. Five people went to the Navajo nation in Arizona to build a church and share Christ through children s ministry. Nineteen teenagers along with three leaders spent a week in West Virginia also doing ministry with children. Pray that the work they watered will flourish. (continued on Page 8)

The PNC is united in its choice of an individual with 20 years of ministry experience and strong qualifications who is currently serving as the Senior Pastor of another congregation. On Sunday morning, July 16, Crestwood will hold one worship service for the entire congregation in the West Campus Family Life Center at 10:00 a.m. There will be no other services at either campus that day. The congregational meeting will follow at 11:10 a.m. During the morning service, normal nursery and Children in Worship will be offered. These ministries will continue to oversee children during the congregational meeting. This is an exciting time in the life of Crestwood Church and we hope you will make every effort to be present on July 16 for corporate worship and the congregational meeting to follow. Here we grow again! The Layman reported in June that Crestwood s denomination continued to grow in ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians gained 78 churches and approximately 18,475 members in While the 2016 membership numbers have not been completely finalized yet, Stated Clerk Dana Allin said that the numbers so far show that at the end of 2015 we had 100,081 members and at the end of 2016 we had 118,556. That s an increase of 18,475 members. ECO ended 2016 with 326 churches up from 248 at the end of 2015 and, halfway into 2017, the denomination has grown to more than 340 congregations. Editor s Note: Submissions due on the 15th of each month. Please send to: cathymarshall@crestwoodchurch.org Age 55+ PrimeTimers we are currently on a summer break. Enjoy the summer and stay tuned for fall plans to be announced!

Coming to the West Campus, August 5-12 CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter) For over 20 years, Crestwood has provided shelter for homeless people for one week each year through CARITAS This year we will host 32 men at our West Campus from August Volunteers are needed and opportunities include: overnight hosts, dinner and lunch preparers, food donors, and laundry providers. There is also an excellent opportunity for fellowship each evening where you can engage in conversation and games with our guests. Be sure to check sign-up sheets at both campuses, as well as on The City and our website. Please also consider donating new white socks and underwear and gently-used men s clothing. Your Help Is Needed! Congregational Care Did you know that the Congregational Care Committee oversees the delivery of meals to people recovering from illness, surgery, or childbirth, or facing another stressful situation? We do, but we need your eyes and ears to help us to know who needs what. If you know someone in the Crestwood family dealing with such a situation and in need of meals, please Martha Wild at mrthwild@gmail.com. Did you also know that the Congregational Care Committee oversees the delivery of cards to encourage members of our church family who are going through difficult times? The best way to let us know if someone in your family would benefit from a card is by placing a request for prayer in the offering plate on Sunday morning. Rest assured the person will be prayed for and notified via a card from a member of the Correspondence Committee. There is another way you can help. We are always open to ideas, and our committee meetings are open to anyone, not just deacons. If you would like to share an idea with us about how we can better serve the congregation, please join us at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 11, at the West Campus.

These students will complete the process of membership with their baptisms on Sunday, July 9th, at 1:00 p.m. Baptisms are a public, corporate event, not private or individual, so we hope as many of the congregation as possible will attend! The baptisms will take place at Robious Landing Park, and we ll meet in the main parking and walk together to the old boat ramp. A map is available at each campus. 8 Page 8 the Chronicle The Pastor s Pen - conclusion Another nine teenagers and two leaders will head to Jamaica on July 22nd to participate in kingdom work in that nation. And the night before they leave, a team of seven adults departs for a week in Albania to do children s ministry, adult teaching, and evangelistic outreach with the Bilisht Evangelical Church. In addition to these official Crestwood teams, there are other members engaged in a variety of summer ministries, such as Bob and Joan Heath who annually trek to Harlan, KY to share the love of Christ in service. Your prayers will open the way to fruitfulness rather than barrenness for these teams. These are exciting times for Crestwood Church as we share good news with neighbors near and far. May you be encouraged to offer a generous word or an act of grace and kindness to the people you encounter this month. Dr. Robert K. Burns Lead Pastor, East Campus Albania Mission Trip On July 21st a team of seven from Crestwood will travel to Bilisht, Albania for a week of ministry. We are working with a vibrant congregation in this country once considered the hardest of hardline Communist nations. (Albania is located north of Greece and behind the heel of Italy.) Because even simple supplies like paper plates and craft sticks are not readily available in Albania, we need to take everything we need with us, including items like scissors and glue. If you would like to donate any items, check the partial list on Crestwood s website. More than anything else, we welcome your prayers as we go in the name of Crestwood and Christ to participate in the work God is doing in strengthening his church in Albania. The team of Rob & Janice Burns, Martha Kairu, Wilbur Kakonge, Jim Scorzelli and David & Martha Wild will do children s ministry, adult teaching and evangelistic outreach. Previous outreach has led to ongoing Bible studies in seven neighboring villages. The nominal Muslims populating Albania today are coming to faith in Jesus! The church that is hosting us enjoyed 230 in worship on Easter Sunday, with 40 persons making decisions for Christ. They also are a distribution center for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes in their community.
