From Our Senior Pastor Rev. Larry Krueger pastorkrueger@splcwaco.com In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:19-20, ESV) I sat down to write this article in the aftermath of another senseless shooting at a high school in Florida, where 17 students lives were tragically ended. The news reports probe many different aspects of the tragedy. What was the motive? Why did he do it? Could it have been prevented? Should there be more gun control? How can these kinds of events be avoided in the future? Our own sense of prevention has heightened at St. Paul following the tragic shootings at a church in Texas on a Sunday morning. How can we improve safety at our church? What should one do if such occurrence began happening? How many or how few precautions should be taken? Questions such as these abound after tragedies shake our foundation and heighten our awareness. I do not claim to have the in-site to answer each of these questions. However, I do have the answer for one question that often arises. That is the question of, Where was God? I know this answer because the Holy Scriptures tell us where God was and what God was doing. He was doing what he does every day, namely, In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself. He is in the world reconciling us to Himself. In the middle of tragedies, in the middle of our daily routines, in the middle of peace and calm, God is at work doing that which He desires, working to bring us back to himself in the midst of the evil world that surrounds us. I read a quip after the school shooting that read something like, Why wasn t God at the school protecting those students? To which God replied, I m not allowed in schools. While I get the writer s point about the leading of public prayers and the teaching of religion not being allowed in public schools, I do not think this is a totally accurate statement. For wherever God s people are, God is being represented in that place. As the Apostle Paul wrote, We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. Sunday Worship 8am & 10:30am Bible Class/Sunday School 9:15am So, if His people are there then God s representatives are present. Where this needs attention is what are His ambassadors doing? If the ambassadors are not representing and presenting God in that place, then the witness is lacking. We dare not blame God for that one. God has sent in his people to combat the evil that lurks in this world. It is a daunting battle. But we know that Jesus has already won the war. It is finished. continued on page 9

PAGE 2 MESSENGER MARCH 2018 A Message From Our Associate Pastor Rev. Matthew Hardaway pastorhardaway@splcwaco.com Things You Can Do To Witness Christ - Witness Christ in Life As Well As Words On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. - John 7:37-39 Last month I wrote about the importance of knowing your faith in order to be a witness to it, specifically utilizing Luther s Small Catechism as a tool for better understanding God s Word. This month I was planning on talking about witnessing in how we live our lives. Funny thing is, Pastor Krueger s sermon on Sunday, February 18, did just that! If you missed church that Sunday, highly recommend watching it online. Many times we end up witnessing our faith in how we live our lives, and we don t even realize it. I would like to share a personal example of that from my own life. By now many of you should know that I was an adult confirmand into the Lutheran Church. Being raised in one of the largest cities in the United States and attending a high school that had over 3,000 students you would think that I would have known at least one Lutheran growing up. For the longest time though I had quipped that the first Lutheran I ever met was my wife, and that when we met I called Lutheran s that weird, crazy branch of the Roman Catholic Church. I found out last year that I had been wrong. While I never met him or his family, there was a Lutheran in my life for a very long, painful, stressful, trying and mournful time for my family. Taking care of a spouse or family member with a terminal, incurable illness is challenging to say the least. To do so while raising a young family and being the sole bread-winner is the life my father had for over twenty years, from just about the time he married mom until God called her home. Most workplaces would not be able to accommodate an employee s schedule that needed to vary from week to week based on doctors appointments and the health of your spouse. One can only go so long needing to take multiple days off for treatments or week-long hospital stays before an employer has to part ways with you. This was not the case for my dad. He was a manager for Luther s BBQ in Houston. Being a restaurant manager means having an always changing schedule and some very odd hours. During the rodeo season in Houston managers knew they would be working 6 to 8 weeks without a day off. This environment shouldn t have been conducive for my father, for some reason, Luther s was always willing to work with him. As a family we knew how blessed we were - but were especially amazed at the showing of support from Luther s BBQ when mom died. They provided meal upon meal for our extended family. They gave dad three weeks of paid time off to take care of the funeral and his children. They provided a huge collage of pictures of mom for the visitation and funeral. Multiple employees from the company came to visit us and give their support and condolences on top of a huge financial gift. At the time I thought Luther s BBQ was just a great company. Little did I know that Mike Jolly - the founder and owner of the restaurant, was a member of Our Savior LCMS in Houston. Not only that, he was a charter member and president of Houston Lutheran s For Life. There was a reason why my family was blessed beyond understanding the years my dad worked for Luther s BBQ. Mike Jolly believed in Jesus Christ. Out of Mike Jolly s heart flowed rivers of living water. Mike Jolly understood how precious life was, from cradle to the grave and every moment in between. Mike Jolly joined my mom in heaven on February 22, They are now resting from their labors in the presence of Jesus Christ, awaiting the New Jerusalem with the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb - Revelation 22:1 continued on page 9

MARCH 2018 MESSENGER PAGE 3 A Message From Our Pastor Emeritus Rev. Walter F. Albers pastoralbers@splcwaco.com The ability to remember is truly a gift from God. With it, we are able to recall some of the special days in our lives. With memory, we can almost feel the excitement when we graduated from high school or college the happiness that filled us on our wedding day the joy we shared at the birth of our children the fun times we had on vacation. In addition to this, our memory also moves us to action. We remember a birthday or anniversary and we go out and select a card or a gift for that someone special we remember a good time we had and we make plans to repeat it we remember the friendliness of someone and we try to develop a friendship with them. In that last hours of our Lord s life, He instituted Holy Communion. He then told his disciples, Do this in remembrance of Me (Luke 22:19). He is here telling them that they should faithfully pause and remember who He was and what He was all about. They should remember that the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost He came that we might have life and have it in its fullest (Luke 19:10; John 10:10). They should remember the Sacrament of Holy Communion and participate in it for there they would be assured and reminded of the forgiveness of all of their sins they should remember why He suffered, with stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5) and remember why He died to overcome death so that we might say with Paul, O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory? Thanks to be God, we have victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:55). And they must also remember why He rose from the dead on Easter morning, Because I live, you shall live also (John 14:9). But, as I remember who and what Jesus is all about, I am also then forced to remember why why He lived and why He died While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Rom. 5:8) our sins yours and mine we re the cause of His death just as surely as was Judas who betrayed Him the scribes and Pharisees who hated Him Pilate who sentenced Him to death and the soldiers who actually crucified Him. As Isaiah wrote so many years ago, He took up our infirmities carried our sorrows was pierced for our transgressions crushed for our iniquities the Lord has lain on Him the iniquity of us all (Is. 53:5). Someone said recently, the greatest motivation to live for Christ is a good memory of His death for us. When I think about His death for us, and the reason why, how can I not be motivated to be more faithful in worship in attendance at the Sacrament in Bible study in service to my fellowman? Our memory is indeed a gift from God. As we approach Good Friday and see again the price paid for our salvation, The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7) as we approach Easter and the joy of the resurrection, He that believes in Me shall never die (John 11:25) may the memory of Him who never forgets, draw us closer to Him in faith and service. We will offer a New Member class on Thursday, March 15, & Thursday, March 22, from 6:30-8:30pm. If you have been considering joining the St. Paul Family, or would like more information about the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, please consider attending this class. Please call the church office or see Pastor Krueger if you are interested, so you can receive materials in advance to prepare for the class.

PAGE 8 MESSENGER MARCH 2018 A Message From Our Deaconess Dcs. Suzanne Krahn dcskrahn@splcwaco.com DID YOU KNOW? As you know, March is known for St. Patrick s Day and The Luck of the Irish mantra. But did you know that the month of March has many other important and fun facts to be recognized. The serious ones are: Brain Injury Awareness; Colorectal Cancer Awareness; Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness; Malignant Hypertension Awareness and Training; Multiple Sclerosis Awareness; Nutrition Awareness; Poison Prevention Awareness; & Epilepsy Awareness just to name a few. There are many fun facts also about the month of March that I thought you might like to ponder. They are: National Noodle month; Peanut Month; International Listening Awareness; Pig Day; I Want You to be Happy Day; National Patsy Day; Sock Monkey Day; What if Cats and Dogs had Opposable Thumbs? Day; Wear Yellow Day; Wear Blue Day; Day of the Dude; Get Over it Day; Panic Day; Day of Awesomeness; Fill our Stapler Day; Napping Day; Open an Umbrella Indoors Day; Save a Spider Day; True Confessions Day; National Goof-Off Day; Be Mad Day; Wear Purple Day; and National She s Funny That Way Day. Well you get the picture here. Just between you and me, I have never heard of many of these days and probably wish that I have not heard of these days before now. I don t need a day to let me know that I need to refill my stapler; I don t need a day to remember a dude; If God had wanted cats and dogs to have thumbs like humans he would have given them thumbs already; I don t need a day to be aware of awareness; I don t need a day to get over it (sometimes it takes longer than a day, just kidding); I can take a nap any day; and so on and so forth. Other interesting facts about March: it is the third month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar, and was the first month in the early Roman calendar with March 1 designated as the new year, (so Happy New Year again?). It was named Martius after Mars, the Roman god of war. Great Britain and her Colonies continued to use March as their beginning month until March s birthstone is aquamarine and bloodstone. Its birth flower is the Daffodil (Narcissus). The Anglo-Saxons called the month Hlyd monath (correct spelling) which mean stormy month, or Hraed monath which means rugged month. In the USA March is National Women s History Month and American Red Cross Month, as well as those listed above. March starts on the same day of the week as November every year. Four U.S. Presidents, Andrew Jackson, James Madison, Grover Cleveland, and John Tyler, were born in this month. When the Anglo-Saxons converted to Christianity, they held their chief season of fasting at this time of the month fast of lenet monet, which in time became Lent. As we continue in the Lenten season, we are reminded that this is a more serious season of reflection on the last part of Christ s ministry, the suffering, opposition, hatred, crucifixion, and death; which gloriously leads us to Christ s propitiation for us, taking on our sins and conquering death and the devil with his glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday. May God Bless you during this time of reflection and always, Deaconess Suzanne Krahn He Loves Me So! Please join us on Easter Sunday, April 1, for He Loves Me So! an Easter Mini-Cantata presented by the Nursery & Kindergarten Classes, at 10:00 a.m. in the Family Center.

MARCH 2018 MESSENGER PAGE 9 Easter Lily Orders Members of the Altar Guild will be in the church foyer on Sunday, March 11, to take your orders for Easter Lilies to be used to decorate the altar area on Easter Sunday. The St. Paul Men s Club provides a pancake breakfast each year following our 6:30am Easter Sunrise Worship service. A free-will offering will be accepted with proceeds to benefit the Texas Ramp Project. Please make plans to join us on Easter morning for worship and breakfast! You will be able to dedicate your lily in honor or memory of a loved one and have that information printed in the Easter Sunday bulletin. The cost will be $10.00 per plant. Pastor Krueger continuation What changes the hearts of mankind? When God is in the heart. When he is there the light overcomes the darkness. The goodness of God overcomes the evil of mankind. We mourn with those who lose loved ones in times of tragedy. We also bring hope as God s ambassadors through the message of reconciliation in Christ Jesus our Lord. This message is crucial in combatting evil in our world. This message is ours to share: We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. God help us in this daunting task! Love God and love your neighbor, Pastor Krueger Pastor Hardaway continuation I will never get to thank Mike Jolly this side of heaven for how he was a blessing in my life. His life though is a beautiful example for you and me and all who believe in Jesus Christ. By the power of the Holy Spirit given to the church at Pentecost and to us by the hearing of The Word of God, we too have rivers of living water flowing from us. We might not always recognize it. We might not always get to see the effects of it, but it does flow from us, because that is the work of our Triune God. And it is because of that very work of God that we too will get to hear one day - Well done, good and faithful servant! Thanks be to God for working through Mike Jolly, and for continuing to work through each one of us! Soli Deo Gloria! With Christ s Love, Pastor Matthew Hardaway

PAGE 10 MESSENGER MARCH 2018 Singers & Songwriters: Chris Tomlin By Steve Randolph My chains are gone. I've been set free, My God, my Savior has ransomed me; And like a flood His mercy rains Unending love, Amazing grace. Chris Tomlin As we continue in this season of Lent, we think about God s amazing grace and the sacrifice that He made to save us from our sins. Contemporary singer, songwriter, and worship leader Chris Tomlin used part of the well-known song, Amazing Grace and combined it with his own lyrics and tune, and created a new song called Amazing Grace, My Chains are Gone. Tomlin also wrote and co-wrote several other songs that are well-known in contemporary Christian music, including How Great Is Our God, Our God, Jesus Messiah, Forever, Holy Is the Lord, and We Fall Down. We have sung some of those songs in worship services here at St. Paul, and during Vacation Bible School and Sunday School Music. Chris Tomlin was born in 1972 in Grand Saline, Texas. He is the worship leader at Passion City Church in Atlanta. Formerly, Tomlin was a staff member at Austin Stone Community Church. He has led the worship at many different events, and he has released several albums, including Burning Lights, which was only the fourth Contemporary Christian Music album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 Chart. Tomlin has been named Male Vocalist of the Year at the Gospel Music Association s Dove Awards several times, Artist of the Year, was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. Tomlin learned to play the guitar by playing along to Willie Nelson records, and he composed his first worship song when he was fourteen. Tomlin originally planned to be a physical therapist, but felt God s calling to do something else. After attending both Tyler Junior College and Texas A&M University, Tomlin began working with a band while he worked with the Harvest Ministry at the Woodlands United Methodist Church in the late 1990s. Tomlin was invited to work with the Passion Conferences in 1997, and he has done so ever since. Tomlin has toured and worked with many other contemporary Christian Artists, including Matt Redman, Steven Curtis Chapman, Delirious, Isaac Houghton and New Breed, and Toby Mac. Tomlin s version of the song, Indescribable, was used as the official wake-up call for Mission Specialist Patrick Forrester on Space Shuttle mission STS-117. Indescribable is certainly an appropriate song for that I will close with the first verse and chorus: From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea, Creation's revealing Your majesty. From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring, Every creature unique in the song that it sings, All exclaiming Indescribable, uncontainable, You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name. You are amazing God; All powerful, untameable. Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim, You are amazing God; You are amazing God.
