Larry Krueger The Summertime Blues When I was a younger man, make that a much younger man, like many of my peers I listened to Top 40 music of the times. During those years there was a band named, The Who, that was quite popular. One of the songs The Who recorded and released that was a hit number in those days was a song titled, Summertime Blues. The song was originally co-written and recorded by Eddie Cochran in Other artists recorded and released the same song, including most notably The Beach Boys and Alan Jackson. The lyrics of the first verse of that song, along with the refrain, were, as follows: Well, I m gonna raise a fuss I m gonna raise a holler Bout workin all summer Just to try to earn a dollar Well, I went to the boss man Tried to get a break But the boss said, No dice, son, You gotta work late. Sometimes I wonder what I m gonna do Cause there ain t no cure for the summertime blues. pastorkrueger@splcwaco.com The sentiment in these lyrics has probably been echoed by many a person over the years, not just by a young person during summer break, but by many who find themselves feeling blue over what can sometimes seem like the monotony of life. The sentiment is often expressed over and over again. Sometimes I wonder what I m gonna do Cause there ain t no cure for the summertime blues. Sunday Worship 8am & 10:30am Bible Class/Sunday School 9:15am Is it really true that there ain t no cure for the summertime blues? More so, for the blues in general? What insight does God s word share on this matter?

2 PAGE 2 MESSENGER JULY 2017 Pastor Krueger continued... Scripture teaches us that we receive joy to overcome the blues. While there are many verses of Scripture that remind us of the joy and hope we have in the Lord, consider these references as help for one with the summertime blues. Psalm 28:7 - The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him. Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Matthew 5:12 - Jesus said, Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. John 15:11 Jesus said, These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. (ESV) We all get blue from time to time no matter the season of the year. It is my prayer that during those times we need not wonder what I m gonna do, but rather turn to God s promises for joy, hope and the cure through our Lord, Jesus Christ. 3 JULY 2017 MESSENGER PAGE 3 A Message From Our Pastor Emeritus Rev. Walter F. Albers pastoralbers@splcwaco.com In a devotion I was recently reading, they were discussing how the zebra mussel, which first appeared in Lake St. Clair in 1988, has now become the scourge of the Great Lakes. Many believe, if it goes unchecked, it could eventually enter and affect two-thirds of the nations waterways and cause millions of dollars in damage. One Canadian water plant on Lake Ontario, removed over 30 tons of mussels that were clogging two and half miles of intake pipe. They seem to be noting but a problem. However, researchers have found that this shellfish is very adept at filtering toxic material out of the water. The Great Lakes have for many years been battling this problem. And now, it is found that a single zebra mussel can filter as much as 2 quarts of water in a single day. Ironic, isn t it, that something that can be so helpful, can also be harmful and destructive. The same is true, so many times, in life. Sometimes, events that are harmful can be a blessing. During times of drought, people turn to the Lord in prayer as they realize our help is still only found in Him. And when sickness comes, it is devastating and frightening, especially if it is serious. The death of a loved one, how it touches us in every fiber of our being often forces us to look at our lives, and perhaps, re-evaluate our priorities. Many times, it draws us closer to the Lord makes us more aware of our inability to cope with life on our own give us a greater appreciation of our faith, and family, and friends moves us to thank God for the blessings give us in the health care ministries. How important it is that, as we face life each day, we not only confess with our lips, but also deeply believe in our hearts that all things do work together for good to those who love the Lord (Romans 8:28). To believe with the Psalmist, It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes (Psalm 119:71). If we have that kind of faith look at our trials and tribulations with that understanding, even though many are caused by our sinfulness we will not only be able to survive the hurts and setbacks of life, but we will be strengthened...we will grow in our faith and see even more clearly that God is not punishing us for every sin we have committed He has not turned His back on us, nor has He forgotten about us God is not a vengeful God. Rather, we will see how much our God loves us and how He is working to draw us closer to Himself working to help us know each day the blessings of being His children and living in that child-like faith. The rain, dark clouds, and wind of today, bring flowers, green grass, bountiful crops and beauty of tomorrow. How wonderful of God to give us that hope in the dark times of life!

8 PAGE 8 MESSENGER JULY 2017 A Message From Our Deaconess Dcs. Suzanne Krahn dcskrahn@splcwaco.com Every year in July it is the start of the very hot and usually dry weather degree temps are not uncommon. Last year I and my family moved down here from northern Iowa the last of June. So the first full day here was July 1, What were we met with but 100+ degree temps! Welcome to Texas, was the battle cry from most all those we met. Seriously, the hot weather is no joking matter. Being in the heat for prolonged periods of time is dangerous to say the least. Heat-related illnesses include: Heat rash (prickly heat), which occurs when the sweat ducts to the skin become blocked or swell, causing discomfort and itching. Heat cramps, which occur in muscles after exercise because sweating causes the body to lose water, salt, and minerals (electrolytes). The nervous system controls the body s normal temperature. When that temperature changes (in this case rises), the body attempts to maintain that normal temp by transferring heat by sweating and blood flow to the skin to help keep us cool. When this no longer happens, then heat-related problems occur. High body temps can develop rapidly in extremely hot environments. Heat edema is swelling of hands and feet. Heat tetany is hyperventilation and heat stress, usually caused by short periods of stress in hot environments. Heat syncope or fainting occurs when low blood pressure is caused from blood vessels expanding and body fluids move into the legs because of gravity. Heat exhaustion is from working or exercising in hot temps and one does not drink enough liquids to replace lost fluids. Heatstroke occurs when the body fails to regulate its own temp, which rises to often 105 degrees F. Heatstroke is a medical emergency and needs immediate treatment, or it can be life-threatening. Stay in where it is cool, moderate your workload, so if you have to do something, do it while it is still cool outside. Be sure to stay well hydrated. Avoid alcohol as this will increase your risk of dehydration. Be sure that the medications you take are not adverse to heat or alter your thirst. Always check with your doctor for advice about hot-weather related activity and your risk of getting a heat-related illness. Those who are at risk of heat-related illnesses in the summer are babies (they do not lose heat quickly), the elderly (they do not sweat easily and have other health issues already), obese persons (they have decreased blood flow to the skin and hold the heat in longer), persons with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, and cancer, and people who live in cities with tall buildings and air pollutants. The humidity is also a big factor in how one is able to sustain the heat-waves that we endure. The higher the humidity and dew point the harder the body has to work to maintain its normal body temp. So stay cool, drink plenty of water and electrolyte replacement fluids, wear light clothing, and relax if at all possible. Stay cool ya ll Dcs. Suzanne Krahn

10 PAGE 10 MESSENGER JULY 2017 Blest Be the Tie That Binds By Steve Randolph 1) Blest be the tie that binds 3) We share our mutual woes, Our hearts in Christian love; Our mutual burdens bear, The fellowship of kindred minds And often for each other flows Is like to that above. The sympathizing tear. 2) Before our Father s throne 4) When here our pathways part, We pour our ardent prayers; We suffer bitter pain; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, Yet, one in Christ and one in heart, Our comforts and our cares. We hope to meet again. 5) From sorrow, toil, and pain, And sin we shall be free And perfect love and friendship reign Through all eternity. John Fawcett ( ) John Fawcett, the author of Blest Be the Tie That Binds, was born in England in January of Fawcett had a rough childhood. When he was 12 years old, John lost his parents and became an orphan. Around that time, John also started working 14-hour shifts in an English factory, and he spent several hours each night learning to read and write by candlelight. Yet by the time John was 25, he became an ordained minister. John Fawcett took a small church in Wainsgate, England. John s congregation consisted of about 100 poorly educated members who could only pay a modest salary and who sometimes paid him with wool and potatoes. John preached faithfully and wrote many hymns and books, and he even founded a school to help train young men who wished to become pastors. Soon, John Fawcett was considered one of the greatest scholars and preachers in England. According to one source, one of the essays written by John impressed King George III, and the king offered to give John a more prestigious congregation with a much higher salary. Soon, John received a call to the great Carter Lane Church in London, and he began making preparations to move. The time came for John to leave and his belongings were loaded on the wagon. As John went around to telling his congregational members goodbye, he was overcome with sadness. John asked for the wagon to be unloaded and he told everyone that he would stay for a while longer, which turned into 54 years. John never accepted the offer from King George III, and he stayed with the people he loved until he passed away in About 10 years after John decided to stay with his congregation at Wainsgate, he authored the verses of Blest Be the Tie That Binds. The hymn has been sung to multiple tunes. The tune used in both The Lutheran Hymnal and Lutheran Service Book is called Boylston and was composed by Lowell Mason and published in ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING THE CHOIR THIS FALL!
