2 Blessed to Serve Our Church Community Coming Events & Notices ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Please mark Sunday, February 3 on your calendar and plan to attend the Annual General Meeting of all St. Paul s voting members. The meeting will be held immediately after service. In conjunction with the AGM, the Sunday School will be hosting a by-donation lunch, with all proceeds going to upgrading the Sunday School classrooms. LADIES & TEEN GIRLS: Our next potluck and study evening will be Wednesday, February 6 at 6:00 pm. We are using a wonderful video series by Sheila Walsh. Please plan to attend. Bring something to share, and enjoy an evening of fellowship with your sisters in Christ. There s a sign-up sheet on the Bulletin Board. CALLING ALL PRAYER PALS: Ladies, the big reveal is coming up. Find out who s been thinking of you, praying for you and sending you those lovely cards since this time last year. Be sure to join us Sunday, February 10, after service, for our annual Prayer Pal Tea, sponsored by your friendly, neighbourhood LWML. LUTHER LAND TOUR: Two years ago we celebrated the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation. Many journeyed to see where these historic events took place. Many of us did not have the opportunity to go at that time. However, there is another chance. In July of 2020, Pastor Lunderby will be leading an 11 day tour to the Luther sites in Germany. During one of the final days of the trip, the group will see the historic, world famous Passion Play of Oberammergau which is performed only every 10 years. There is a sample itinerary on the bulletin board in the narthex. For more info on this tour, please speak to Pastor. 2

3 Coming up soon Lent and Easter There will be some changes to our Lenten midweek program. Beginning March 6, instead of dinners on Wednesday evenings, we will gather at 6:45 pm for a Lenten service followed by a time of fellowship and a light lunch in the church hall. Please see the Lenten Services letter attached (inserted) to this Messenger for more details. EVERYONE LIKES A CHALLENGE, RIGHT? Pastor Lunderby is inviting all members to take the 40 Day RED LETTER CHALLENGE. The RLC is unique because it takes the words of Jesus, the red letters in the gospel, and gives you practical, daily challenges based on those words. The RLC will give you targets to shoot for to help you measure how you are practically following after Him. RLC believes Jesus followers want to be the best Jesus followers we can be, not out of obligation, but out of gratitude for what Jesus has done for us! This challenge begins after Easter, but we want to get everyone on board before then. Please sign up to participate or be a group leader. More information is coming. Stewardship Corner Jan. 27 (Third Sunday after Epiphany) Matt. 8:8 But the centurion replied, Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. The Word of the Lord is powerful and effective. What God says, goes. Let there be light. And there was light. His Word is still effective and creative for us: This is my Body given for you. Your sins are forgiven. This is why it is no burden for us to live according to the Word of God: we know that His Word is always bent on our blessing. 3

5 Lenten Services For 2019 Our Midweek Lenten Services this year will feature simplicity, with a spotlight focus on the Places of Jesus Passion in the Gospel of Luke. We begin at the temple with Judas making plans to betray Jesus in our Ash Wednesday Service, Mar. 6, 2019 (Also marking with Ashes and Lord s Supper in the service) In the other services we will be at the Upper Room, Lenten Service 1 - Mar. 13, 2019 The Garden of Gethsemane for a place of prayer and a kiss of betrayal, Lent Service 2 - Mar. 20, 2019 The House of the High Priest (Courtyard), Lent Service 3 - Mar. 27, 2019 The House of the High Priest (Trial), Lent Service 4 - April 3, 2019 The Place of the Skull (Death), Lent Service 5 - April 10, 2019 Lenten Services will begin at 6:45 p.m. in the church beginning with Ash Wednesday (No meal before service). After the services there will be a light lunch in the basement Please bring to share for the lunches: Ash Wednesday: Fruit breads (Example raisin bread/lemon/banana, bread etc.) and cheese and or jam to go with the bread Week One: Sandwiches and squares Week Two: Cheese and crackers, vegies and dip, fresh fruit Week Three: any and all cupcakes or tarts Week Four: any and all kinds of pies Week Five: any and all kinds of cakes In the Passion of Jesus, we see His willingness to give up His life for the salvation of sinners. Jesus sacrificed Himself for the good of others. He denied His own life to save sinners. A focus of this year s Lenten Services is to encourage everyone in the giving of up of themselves to bless others. Ash Wednesday Scripture deals with Judas making plans to betray Jesus. He received thirty pieces of silver for betraying Jesus. The thirty pieces of silver were meant to pay Judas for a traitorous act. Will you consider giving up thirty pieces of silver (Coins) in kindness to help others? There will be an opportunity to give your thirty coins nickels/dimes/quarters/loonies/toonies during the five weeks of Lent for the blessing of our Refugee Family. The coins will be counted at our last Lenten Service Lunch and the coins will be given to our Refuge Family. In our Mar. 13 th Lenten Service which deals with preparing the Upper Room for the Passover meal, will you consider giving non-perishable food stuffs for the Food Bank? Bring the food to the lunch after service. 5

6 In our Mar. 20 th Lenten Service, we have prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane Will you consider praying for a missionary, or a particular mission organization (LWML) (LLL) (LBT) (Lamp) during Lent? In our Mar. 27 th Lenten Service, we have the denial of Peter in the courtyard. Will you consider refusing to gossip (both positive gossip or negative gossip) about anyone for three days wherever you are (home/work)? In our April 3 th Lenten Service, we have the trial of Jesus. Will you consider using one of the Blessed on Purpose cards and Blessing a stranger this week? In our April 10 th Lenten Service, we have the crucifixion of Jesus. Will you consider using one of the Blessed on Purpose cards this week to Bless someone that you know 6
