He is considering a proposal to become our full time organist. Pastor Appreciation Month! Please join us for cake after the service. WORSHIP GUIDE Our worship is participatory. This guide will help you. The text that follows is called liturgy. Some parts are spoken or sung by worship leaders. Other parts are spoken or sung by the whole assembly. The parts spoken or sung by the whole assembly are identified with bold text. We will also sing some songs (or hymns). These songs are identified with a title and a song number. These songs may be found in one of three books or printed in this bulletin. These books are identified as follows: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) the red book With One Voice (WOV) the blue book Worship and Praise (WP) the purple book Other instructions (when to stand) are printed in italic text or will be provided by a worship lead. 1

3 TODAY S WORSHIP We are in the middle of the season of Pentecost. During this time the texts we hear each Sunday are focused on Jesus words and actions concerning the kingdom of God. Today the texts come from Ezekiel and the Gospel according to Matthew. Speaking through the prophet Ezekiel, God states that a person s sin is based on the actions of that person and no one else and promises forgiveness to those who repent. The Gospel of Matthew tells us that after Jesus was questioned as to the source of his authority, he told a parable of two sons, one who did what his father asked and one who did not. 2

Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 18 ANNOUNCMENTS Social Concern of the Month is for the help and recovery of the victims of Hurricane Harvey "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39 Hurricane Harvey, one of the most powerful storms to hit the United States in years, made landfall last night, threatening millions of our neighbors in Texas and Louisiana with heavy rain, wind and rising tides. The National Hurricane Center called the storm's effects "life-threatening, devastating and catastrophic" and predicted long periods of rain and flooding, along with massive power outages. While many have evacuated, significant damage is still expected, and thousands of people may be housed in shelters for extended periods of time. We have an opportunity to accompany our neighbors during and after this disaster, in Jesus Christ's name. IMPORTANT PLEASE, IF YOU ARE THE LAST PERSON TO LEAVE ON SUNDAY, BE SURE THAT ALL DOORS ARE CLOSED TIGHT. THEY WILL ALREADY BE LOCKED. 17

20 The Ecumenical Prayer Cycle This Week October 1, 2017 Pray for: Columbia, Ecuador, and Venezuela Continued progress towards peace in Colombia and the establishment of a safe environment for all people. The creation of a stable and fair economy in Ecuador. An end to corruption by government officials. An end to drug production and trafficking, and the availability of other methods of economic activity. The indigenous peoples of these countries, who often bear the brunt of poverty amid growing economic disparity. Those who are poor, unemployed, and grieving, and those who work with them. Those affected by flooding and earthquakes. A renewal of faith by Christians in these countries. Those kidnapped or held hostage and their families. Those who have left their families and friends to go to another country to support those back home. 19
