August 2018 The First United Methodist Church You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, because that's what I am. John 13:13 It is already back to school time! Can you believe it?

As the open house at Perry Heights School approached, I would wonder if I have friends in my class. Would I get a good teacher? What would this year bring?

The best part of the week in her class was when we gathered and she would read to us from the Box Car Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner. She made learning, especially reading, fun.

I remember the butterflies I would get in my stomach each year as I prepared to return to school. Mom would take me shopping for crayons and new clothes. As the open house at Perry Heights School approached, I would wonder if I have friends in my class. Would I get a good teacher? What would this year bring? I had some wonderful teachers who made a huge difference in my life. One of my favorites was Mrs. Dorothy who taught me in 2 nd Grade. The best part of the week in her class was when we gathered and she would read to us from the Box Car Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner. She made learning, especially reading, fun. Looking back on it I m sure that she helped instill my love of mystery books that continues to this day. The Gospels portray Jesus as both Lord and a master teacher. He was unlike any teacher who came before him. He taught with both his words and his actions. His lessons were filled with humor and real life examples. Even his miracles were life-lessons. People flocked from villages and towns to hear him share about the Kingdom of God. They encountered the Holy One in the Master Teacher. Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority-- quite unlike the teachers of religious law. Mark 1:21-22 This fall at Logansport First UMC we will be Back To School with Jesus. We will spend 6 weeks looking at The Sermon on The Mount, which is found in Matthew 5-7. This passage reveals Jesus heart and his vision for his followers. I hope you will join us on this journey. After all, we were never intended to stop learning or growing when we graduated! 2 Church News and Updates SEPTEMBER 8-9, 2018 Join us as we celebrate God s Faithfulness to First UMC! Homecoming Golf Scramble The Homecoming Golf Scramble is Saturday, Sept 8, at Par 3. Tee time is 10 AM. Fee for 18 holes and cart is $19, without cart, $11. Sign up at the Resource Table. Deadline to register is Sunday, Sept 2. Fellowship Event Saturday, Sept 8, there will be a Fellowship Time from 4-6 PM with ice cream sundaes from Sycamore. This event will be held at the Carousel at Riverside Park. Celebration Service A Celebration Service will he held on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 9:30 AM. Brian Shockney and the Geisler family will headline our music. Carry-In Dinner Following the Celebration Service there will be a carry-in dinner in the Fellowship Hall. Meat and drinks will be provided. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Preparation for Kairos Torch #9 is Underway! First UMC supported Logansport Kairos Torch #8 in a mighty way in 2018 through prayer, purchasing meal tickets, financial donations and making posters and placemats. Kairos Torch is part of Kairos Prison Ministry International (KPMI). KPMI s mission is to share the transforming love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ to impact the hearts of incarcerated men, women, youth, and their families to become loving and productive citizens of their communities. Logansport Kairos Torch #9 will kick off with a special night at the Logansport Juvenile Correctional Facility on Fri, Oct 12, followed by the Weekend Program, Oct Kairos Torch has a small staff and relies on volunteers who will participate in the Weekend and Mentoring programs, bake chocolate chip cookies for participants, or create posters and placemats to encourage the youth and guests during the Weekend. Meal tickets can be purchased for $10 which helps provide meals and snacks. Financial donations are always welcome to help cover the $5-8,000 cost of a Kairos Torch Weekend. The sign-up sheet is on the Mission Bulletin Board. Servers provide 4 dozen baked items on the Sunday they have selected. They also set-up the coffee, serve during the Hospitality Time between services and clean up after the second service. Sign up sheets are located on the Mission bulletin board. If you have been blessed with an abundance of garden vegetables or fruit and would like to share with our LCM staff and families, please bring them to the office. We will make them available. Little Children s Ministry News August 2018 Little Children s Ministry is finishing up our summer program and greatly anticipating a wonderful upcoming preschool year.

6 Little Children s Ministry News August 2018 Little Children s Ministry is finishing up our summer program and greatly anticipating a wonderful upcoming preschool year. This year s preschool will begin on Wednesday, August 8. A new lesson plan for the facility has been created. Every class will have monthly numbers, letters, color, nursery rhyme, Bible verse and Bible story. LCM has also planned 5 missions for the preschool year. August is Collecting School Supplies for LCM Families in Need, October is Breast Cancer Awareness, November/December is Toy Drive for LCM families in need, February is Animal Shelter Drive, and a Summer Fun Drive in April. We will post additional information as the dates get closer. New chapel materials were ordered for Nicole. She now has additional material to assist in following the faculty lesson plan. This material includes information for A-Z in the Bible for preschoolers as well as material for toddlers. We are excited to see what she has in store for Chapel Time this upcoming school year. Update on the Project Playground: LCM raised enough money to purchase the Mole Hill. It was delivered on Friday, July 27, and will be installed on August 8 & 9. This will complete the larger playground. We are still collecting donations to purchase the toddler equipment. LCM was able to raise $100 in additional funds by offering Popcorn Fridays to the families throughout the month of July. We are $ from reaching our entire Project Playground goal. Additional fundraisers will be planned for the upcoming months. It is amazing how much money we have been able to raise since March! Thank you to everyone who contributed! Super Hero Bible Lessons with the Pastor has been a success. Every Tuesday in July, Pastor Beth Ann led Chapel Time for both preschoolers and toddlers. She also hosted Paint with the Pastor for the LCM Zoo Crew on Tuesday, July 31. The children truly enjoyed being taught Bible Stories while incorporating super heroes! We sincerely thank Pastor Beth Ann for her time and efforts! She did a wonderful job!
