5 Taking the saving gospel To a lost world RONALD COLEMAN 8813 WOOD GLEN DRIVE ROWLETT, TEXAS GO INTO ALL THE WORLD AND PREACH THE GOSPEL TO EVERY CREATURE CENTERVILLE ROAD CHURCH OF CHRIST 1102 E. CENTERVILLE ROAD GARLAND, TEXAS (972) NOVEMBER 2017 The church in former Soviet Union countries has made progress but assistance is still desired and appreciated. I first went to the city of Kremenchuk in 1996 and I ordinarily go twice a year, in March and October. Don Oelze, who preaches in Anacortes, Washington, first went with me in 2001 and regularly goes on the autumn trip. Rose and I have known Don and his wife, Elnora, since college days at Freed-Hardeman and have worked with them in various mission areas since that time. This trip, we took an overnight flight to London and met them at Heathrow airport. From there we flew together to Kiev, Ukraine s capital city. The next morning a brother from Kremenchuk made the 160-mile, four-hour trip by car to collect us and take us to our destination. Don and I preach on the three Sundays we are there and take part in a two-hour, mostly question/answer session on Saturday afternoons. But we go primarily to teach in the Bible school begun in the early days of the congregation. Things have changed a lot since the gospel was first taken to the city in In my early years there some students came from distant areas in Ukraine, and even from Russia, wanting to train to preach. Now, preacher training programs are operated in the country by the Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock, Texas and the Bear Valley School of Preaching in Denver, Colorado. These schools were in the part of Ukraine invaded and taken over by Russia three years ago. Both are functioning again, now in other areas of the country. In the Russian controlled
6 area, only the Russian Orthodox Church is allowed. Many Christians were killed during and after this invasion and those who remain there are in danger and must worship in secret. The school in Kremenchuk now is primarily an effort to strengthen and mature the local church. Occasionally, non-christians also attend. About 20 are usually present for the evening courses. Don gave an excellent exposition of the Sermon on the Mount. My subject this time: Ten Important Things Everyone Needs to Know About Jesus. UKRAINE BENEVOLENCE As usual, loving and generous Christians sent money with us for much needed financial assistance in the area. The conflict with Russia makes the economic situation even worse than usual. Money from individual contributors, funds brought by the Oelzes, and the usual, very generous, special contribution from the Wylie, Texas congregation totaled $18,875. Assistance was given to numerous good works that we regularly help. In Kremenchuk we assisted the Rehabilitation Center (a shelter for abandoned and abused children). Next was the orphan home/school for blind and visually impaired children in Svetlovodsk, about 25 miles away. Here, most of the children also have other physical, emotional or mental problems. We always help the prison for juvenile boys. Our brother, Gregory, takes needed items to them, including food. He preaches there regularly and has converted a good number of inmates. We continue to buy supplies for the hospital for severely afflicted babies and small children. The Christians in Kremenchuk work hard helping those in these institutions and most of what we do we do with their help. These places are poorly funded by the government! The money you send helps to provide even basic needs. For some, the present situation brings worries about having heat and electricity this coming winter. Aid was given to a few needy individuals and some money was left to be distributed as needed by the elders of the congregation. It is difficult for us in the U.S. to appreciate how much good is accomplished in a country like Ukraine by the love and generosity of God s people here. The Ukrainian Christians always want us to stress their gratitude! After sending my report last month, I noticed a couple of mistakes. Sorry about that. I had personally read it, very carefully, several times. Also, I have a proofreader! She shall remain nameless, but her initials are the same as mine. Your coworker, Ronald Coleman praying for us also, that God may open unto us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ (Colossians 4:3)
