2 Good Works Annual Report Table of Contents 1 Director s Letter 2 Homeowners 4 Partner Churches 6 Corporate Partners 8 Donors & Friends 9 Financial Review Our Purpose Founded in 1988, Good Works, Inc. is a faith-based nonprofit organization headquartered in Coatesville, PA. From our warehouse sites in Coatesville, West Chester, Phoenixville, and St. Peters Village, we now serve 49 municipalities in Chester County. This is an increase of 13 municipalities which is a direct result of our expansion into northern Chester County. We are the only nonprofit in central and northern Chester County whose sole focus is to utilize volunteers to perform extensive repairs to substandard homes at no cost to the homeowners in those areas. Our Mission is to extend the love of Jesus Christ to low-income homeowners by making their homes warmer, safer, and drier. Our Vision is to eliminate substandard housing in Chester County and to have all homeowners experience the love of Jesus Christ. 3 Director s Letter Friends, Faith powers Good Works. The Bible tells us that Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. 1 Real faith is not vague or blind or irrational. The fact is that we all believe in things we can t see. We can t see the dark side of the moon, but we know it is there. We can t see gravity, but we know it exists. Spiritual faith is believing and acting upon God s promises concerning things we have not yet seen. It is based on the Word of God, the Bible, and the eternal fact that Jesus redeemed us through His death on the cross and His resurrection. 2 Good Works staff and volunteers get their hands dirty. The Bible also tells us not to be just hearers of the Word but doers 3. Over 2,000 scriptures instruct us to serve the needy, the widows, and the orphans who struggle daily; lacking hope of anything ever changing in their lives. Poverty is complex and messy. In 2015, 1,777 volunteers donated over 40,000 hours toiling on the front lines in the battle against poverty in Chester County. Their extraordinary effort speaks for itself having significantly improved the living conditions of 172 low-income families this year alone. When hearts lead hands and faith leads service. Beyond those improved living conditions, interesting things happen when hearts lead hands and when faith leads service. Our work becomes laced with love. We don t just fix a roof, we fix a relationship. We don t just find a leak, we find new friends. Our service leads to prayer and prayer leads to new and renewed relationships between people and almighty God. The fact is, we find God in the doing. Jesus makes Himself known to us through the interactions that occur between homeowners, volunteers and neighbors on each workday. Race and cultural barriers start to disappear and we witness impossibilities turned into possibilities and outcomes that can only be attributed to a very real and very present God. All of this is: the substance of things hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Faith triggers service and service grows faith. I hope as you read our 2015 Annual Report, you will be inspired and encouraged to know that our hearts of faith & hands of service are changing lives in central and northern Chester County and posturing this ministry for expansion in To God Be the Glory, Robert (Bob) Beggs Executive Director Good Works has restored my faith in God s people. I believe this service was Divine intervention to inspire me and enrich my faith. The people demonstrated great testimony for the Lord. 4 Homeowners Getting more than you expect Martha had a serious leak in her upstairs bathroom, but because of her limited income and physical challenges, there was no way she could fix the growing problem. From the first conversation with Good Works, Martha felt there was something special about this organization. It felt like a warm blanket covered me, she recalled. Everyone was so warm, eager and loving. Good Works volunteers replaced my old metal windows, they fixed the leak in my bathroom and replaced the floor, sink and vanity, and they rebuilt a block wall by my basement that now keeps moisture from getting in. I had just called about my bathroom, I had no idea there was anything else they could help me with HIGHLIGHTS 172 families assisted 44 homes completed Well beyond receiving much-needed work on her home, Martha connected with the Good Works volunteers. They laughed, shared meals and prayers together on workdays, making the experience more meaningful for everyone. She even reconnected with an old high school classmate, a former Good Works homeowner who came to a workday at Martha s home to pay forward the help he had received. During the workdays, Martha spent a lot of time talking with Carolyn, a member of the church s work team who served as the Good Works Ambassador. Carolyn always prayed with me about the things I felt concerned about, and she even prayed for people in my life on her own, Martha shared. Martha is a practicing Quaker, and came from a strong faith background, but that faith grew stronger as a result of her relationship with Good Works. Good Works is my little miracle, she said. It has enhanced my faith and filled me with gratitude. Read what other homeowners say about their experiences with Good Works. I feel so incredibly blessed that I found Good Works and that they found me. They have strengthened my faith and made me feel that God is looking out for me. MARTHA, GOOD WORKS HOMEOWNER Faith is the guiding factor in everything we do through Good Works. God is sending his hands out to do good works through the volunteers. That central theme of God s work being done is what drew me to the ministry. CAROLYN COGHLAN Good Works Ambassador, Westminster Presbyterian Church 2

6 Partner Churches Showing up for people Gary Huddell and John Vance lead the two Saturday work crews from Westminster Presbyterian Church. Gary remembered Westminster Presbyterian becoming involved with Good Works after hearing a presentation on the ministry at their church. Westminster volunteers then served at a workday in Coatesville, which led them to becoming a Good Works Partner Church in Gary and the rest of the original team are now working on their 10th home. The church currently has two work crews going out every month and plans to add a third in John came to Christ later in life and this decision drove him to want to serve others. When his family arrived back in West Chester and returned to Westminster Presbyterian after spending time overseas, John felt it was time to give back, share God s love, and, as he put it, show up for people. It was then that a door opened and he was led toward Good Works. Since then, Good Works has become a family affair. John s eldest daughter came with him on his first workday. Little by little, his wife, Louise, has also become involved and both daughters still come along on workdays HIGHLIGHTS 21 Partner Churches 39 families assisted Gary and John have a lot of fun as work crew leaders organizing the projects, keeping the volunteers on task, and, according to John, telling a lot of jokes and taking a lot of ribbing (all in good fun). They both agree though that the most important aspect of the work is the spiritual and emotional impact it can have on both the homeowners and the volunteers. A homeowner can go from hopeless to hope-filled, Gary observed. Volunteers find community and an appreciation for how difficult it is to live in poverty. We transform people s lives, John added. Good Works volunteers are all led by the heart and their desire to do God s work and share the love of Jesus Christ. We use our hands as a way to engage. Learn more about becoming a Good Works Partner Church A workday often feels like an act of worship church in the field. God blesses us with the opportunity to be a blessing to others, I can t think of another activity as formative as serving through Good Works. GARY HUDDELL Work Crew Leader, Westminster Presbyterian Church I enjoyed the Ambassador and their comforting prayers and peaceful spirit. I ve always had a strong relationship with God. My relationship has just broadened and kept me grounded through Good Works. Good Works just added to the many blessings God has given me. GOOD WORKS HOMEOWNER 4

In 2015, the homeowner she worked with was Martha, featured in the homeowners section of this report. Carolyn is a faithful Christian who felt that she was led by God to be a part of the Good Works outreach. Being an Ambassador through Good Works is extremely satisfying because I know that I am being used by God and providing something the homeowners really need, she stated. Being able to speak about God freely is so gratifying, and having someone dedicated to that sharing and time being set aside for that purpose is something that is really different and special about Good Works. Good Works Ambassadors serve as spiritual mentors to homeowners and volunteers who are interested in deepening their faith journey. In 2015, Good Works invested additional time and resources in the Ambassador role to provide better training and support to both elevate and deepen this aspect of their ministry. Ambassadors are asked to engage with volunteers and homeowners around the subject of faith in seven specific ways, and provide feedback on their experiences as a way to try to measure the spiritual impact of the workdays. These seven engagement points are: Praying for and with others on the workday Sharing personal testimony of their faith and the Gospel to others on the workdays Witnessing a desire and decision for someone to know Christ and their prayer of faith to become a Christian Discipleship by encouraging a new believer in Christ and helping them discover the spiritual gifts that God has given them Connecting someone with a local church that is right for them Making referrals to other resources for services that Good Works cannot provide Offering resources to help people know God and grow in their faith 5

8 Corporate Partners The importance of giving back Citadel CEO Jeff March grew up in Coatesville. He remembers how the community rallied around him and his family when his father passed away when Jeff was in college. Over the years, as Jeff and Citadel have grown, he has instilled in his team and corporate culture the importance of giving back and taking the time to support those in need in the communities they serve. Good Works began in Coatesville and has expanded just like Citadel and early on, Jeff identified with the ministry and wanted Citadel to be involved. For several years, Citadel has been a Good Works corporate partner, participating in workdays as well as providing financial support. It was at one of those workdays that current Good Works board member, Doug Thompson, was first introduced to the organization HIGHLIGHTS 51 corporate workdays 2,976 corporate volunteer hours 428 corporate volunteers No stranger to serving in his community, Doug experienced something deeply fulfilling on that first workday and subsequently as a Good Works board member. In both roles, Doug appreciates the opportunities to put his Christian faith into practice by getting his hands dirty at a home site while also seeing the big picture of what it takes for the organization to bring volunteers and homeowners together so that God can work in the lives of both. Doug shares, By showing up and working side-by-side with people, you open the door for conversation and to sharing your faith. Hearts are won over and people are changed. Companies like Citadel play a vital role in the communities where their employees live and work. As Doug experienced, serving low-income families as part of a corporate team is transformative. It broadens perspectives, requires creative problem solving, teaches leadership, and makes people more sensitive to the needs of others and these attributes translated back into the workplace are good for business. It is no wonder that so many companies in Chester County partner with Good Works and encourage their employees to volunteer regularly. Read more about becoming a Good Works Corporate Partner I know that God and Jesus do care about me now... just meeting all of you brought me closer to God. I have been away for some time. Now I ve been praying more and going to church more. All of you strengthened my faith in God. I know God is with me again.
