1 August 2016 B AY VIEW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CONNECTION Newsletter O PEN H EARTS. O PEN M INDS. OPEN D OORS. TM This is the title of one of my favorite resources for worship liturgy. The book was complied at the turn of the century when the subtitle Proclaiming God s Grace in an Inclusive Church was a new and radical idea for the church. I use this resource often for ideas and wording that reflects the inclusive nature of our congregation and the worship we share. The intentional act of welcoming, as a church movement, began in the 1970 s with the focus on the shaping of liturgy for worship as the true work of ALL the people. Our worship, our ministries, our very lives proclaim God s radical grace and our desire and need to be in right relation with ALL of creation. This is living out what it means to be the body of Christ Contents Pastor Columns Pastor Columns Volunteer Ministries Miles for Meals Miles for Meals Music News AC & Hambingo Finance & Stewardship LSP & Birthdays nnn Calendar Contact Info Shaping Sanctuary Shaping Community Life We are blessed here with a history that values and practices active, radical hospitality to ALL as a Reconciling Congregation. This intentional label assures everyone is welcome to join in the worship, education, fellowship and ministry outreach of this congregation. And to YOUR credit, many of our visitors and new members cite the feeling here and the great hospitality of this place as being the primary plus of their continuing connection and commitment to Bay View UMC - marvelous evidence of a great gift! Beyond the label Christine Pohl says, A life of hospitality begins in worship recognizing God s grace and generosity it is first, a response of love and gratitude for God s love and welcome to us. This quote gets me to thinking inside the acts of welcome we share to the deeper motivation of our historic and on-going openness as a congregation and for each of us as beloved of God. As our church continues in ministry together we get tired, stressed even as we are blessed. Ensuring longevity of spirit and preservation of gifts as a part of our stewardship the year round infuses my vision as we move...continued on page 2
2 Shaping Sanctuary......continued from page 1 forward into another program year. We have such an ease in our hospitality, no matter the event, size or timing. What a blessing for friends, family and visitors who come through our doors to worship, meet, grieve and/or celebrate! Thank you, dear friends! For us, worship is that place where we strengthen our collective heart of hospitality and for the ministry God is calling us into together. We need to take care of each other AND prepare to serve others: in business terms it s the work/life balance that will keep us vibrant as a congregation. In the coming months, I want to bring intention to the worshipful inspiration and the inclination of our body to follow Christ s model of radical and inclusive hospitality. I ll be looking at our space and our experience. Are these being crafted to fuel, celebrate and offer enough space for God driven hearts to heed the call of the Spirit toward a life of hospitality (review definition above)? The shaping of sanctuary brings wholeness to the body, energy to the ministry and blessing to each of us as we strive to be God s people. Pastor Kelly You Don't Want to Miss This! What is it you don't want to miss? Why it's the big September 18th Interfaith Picnic! As I write this, our dedicated team of picnic planners just finished meeting for the second time and things are really starting to hum. We have some wonderful folks from the Islamic Society, Unity Lutheran and Christ UCC putting their heads together to make this a very special time. We'll have promotional materials ready in a couple of weeks but please...make this one a priority. With all the hate being fostered in our world it is so important that we stand together as people of faith, as sisters and brothers and show our city that there is inherent goodness in ALL people. That's our goal for this event but on top of that...we just want to have a great time! Here are some of the details; the picnic will be in Humboldt Park, picnic area #4. That's the one by the...continued on page 3 2
3 Don t Miss This......continued from page 2 playground and pavilion. It will officially start at noon but some of us will be setting up and grilling beginning at 10am. Our friends from the Islamic Society will be providing two huge grills plus a couple of hundred hamburgers and hot dogs! Guys, we'll need help cooking up all that goodness so there is an opportunity for you! We'll begin with some icebreaker games that will help us all to greet one another and begin what we hope will be a great afternoon of conversation with new friends. We plan to eat at 1pm. Everyone is invited to bring a salad or dessert dish to go along with those burgers and dogs. We'll have activities for the children including an art station...how cool is that? There will also be volleyball and other games for the adults and we'll wrap everything up by 5pm. It's been almost ten years since of local faith communities came together for something like this. If you were at any of those in the past you know how wonderful they were. How can we make this one just as wonderful? It's easy! All you have to do is show up! Watch for more details coming soon and if you'd like to get on board with the planning team we'll be meeting again here at church on Tuesday, August 9th at 7pm. Let's cap off our summer by making this a picnic to remember! Pastor Andy GriefShare starts its Fall Support Group September 11, 2016 at 2pm. A special seminar and support group for people who are grieving the death of someone close to them. Please contact Allan Eckoldt at for registration information. The group is free of charge, though it is recommended that you purchase the reading supplement - usually it s around $20. We have our weekly meeting every Sunday at 2772 S Kinnickinnic Ave (at the corner of Kinnickinnic and Clement). 4 Bread & Jam Needs ALL of Us Every Week! In July we were blessed by having the Kohl s Associates in Action team from the Kohl s at Loomis supply the volunteers on July 10 th. The following week, July 17 th, a group of ladies from Grace Lutheran Church volunteered. It was wonderful having these outside groups experience the Bread & Jam program which they had not known about previously. When they arrived, they did not know what they would be asked to do but they came in faith and with a willing spirit. By the end of the day, both groups had enjoyed their experience so much that both groups are planning to volunteer again. When we step out in faith to do something unfamiliar or maybe even uncomfortable great things can happen. Please be willing to volunteer at Bread & Jam. If you can help from 1:30-5pm on a Sunday afternoon it would be greatly appreciated. There are tasks for all abilities/experience and we will find you a task you are comfortable performing. You can sign up to volunteer by going to Volunteerspot.com or use the QR code with your phone, by talking to Jan Kosanke on Sunday mornings or ing at breadandjam@bayviewumc.org. 8 Meet us at Hamburger Mary s, 2130 S Kinnickinnic Ave, A Report on Annual Conference 2016!!! by Heather Haile As a first time attendee to Annual Conference, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was told, partway through the first day though, that this year was pretty tame. Indeed, most action items on the agenda seemed to be carried with little or no debate on the floor. Of course, any time money was involved, there was always discussion. I did feel that by attending AC, I was given a chance to learn more about what the UMC does in Wisconsin to provide help to many charities, missions and organizations. We can be proud here at Bay View to be one of only eight churches in the state to receive recognition for meeting all of the criteria to get a Rainbow Covenant award for mission work. Personally, I really enjoyed the worship services. The Bishop has asked us to consider this year a time to "Walk the Trail of Repentance" with regard to how Native Americans have been mistreated by Christians throughout history. And so, Sunday morning we were treated to a beautiful, moving sermon from Rev. Chebon Kernell and music by the Oneida Singers. I also stayed for the Ordination service, which was a lovely, emotional experience. And finally for me, as a born and raised United Methodist, I was blessed to bump into several pastors from my past. As a connectional people, what more could one ask for? Our church is certainly not perfect. Our flaws and failures as a denomination are on full display right now. But I feel there is always hope and always a loving and merciful God hearing our prayers. So please continue to pray: for Bay View, for our pastors, for our Bishop, for our Annual Conference, for the United Methodist Church. 8
9 Stewardship Update Imagine the President of the United States and the Committee on Ways and Means sending jugs, mugs, boxes, barrels, eggs and buttons with their pictures on them to catch pennies to meet the fiscal needs of the great government of the United States! Imagine the different states and countries holding fairs, festivals, concerns, and ice cream socials. with women cooking, sewing, and acting so that each community may meet its apportionment! This would disgrace any earthly government in its own eyes and the eyes of the nations. Yet this is what Christians are doing year by year to finance the kingdom of God! ~ George W. Brown, a Presbyterian layman ; from Gems of Thought on Tithing, published 1911 Thank you to all of you who work to organize and attend Bay View United Methodist fund raisers. 10 Loving Start is off for the month of August. Summer camp was a lot of fun; we had a great field trip to Cream City Swirl. We enjoyed going on a Pirate treasure hunt, participating in the LSP Summer Olympics and receiving gold medals and running thru our new Kid Wash sprinkler. LOVING START PRESCHOOL We enjoyed marching in the 4th of July parade. Including those in the parade we saw 41 former, current or next year s students and a recent high school and college graduate. We have a few openings for fall. If you know of someone who would be interested have them call for a tour.
