1 April 2019 ST. JOSEPH MESSENGER The darkness and gloom of our Lenten penance will soon come to completion. A new and brilliant light has dawned upon the world. Sin and death reign no more. Christ has conquered, and eternal life has been offered to us. Easter Sunday is the greatest and oldest of Christian feasts. It celebrates Christ s resurrection from the dead. Easter is the feast of feasts; it is the Great Sunday, a model for all the Sundays throughout the year. In 325 AD, at the Council of Nicaea, the ancient churches agreed that Easter should be celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. This accounts for the reason that Easter is celebrated anytime from the end of March to the end of April. No matter the date, the importance of Easter is that it tells us of Christ s victory over sin and death. His resurrection from the dead is a promise for those who are faithful that they too will rise from the dead and will inherit everlasting life. That is the basic pattern of Christian life - apparent failures blossoming into victories - Good Fridays turning into Easter Sundays. Our Good Friday comes as we follow Jesus the Christ up the hill of Calvary carrying the heavy cross. There we are asked to die to our selfishness by surrendering to God s holy will. It is painfully true but necessary. Then the grace of God moves within us, and we discover new growth of faith, hope and love. Yes, our own personal Easter Sunday. Our Christian life is an infinite number of variations on this one theme, revealed to us by God in Christ: Good Friday - Easter Sunday; Good Friday - Easter Sunday; Good Friday - Easter Sunday. The story of Christianity is one of cross and resurrection, love and sacrifice and defeat and victory. Today we profess our faith that the Resurrection of Jesus is not a dream but a reality. All the darkness in this world has been conquered by the Light of Christ Jesus and His resurrection. That death gives way to the promise of eternal life. We know that in Christ Jesus we can experience forgiveness and new life, redeemed by the blood of the Savior. Easter for most of us needs to be a time for renewal of our discipleship. We can recommit ourselves to Christ and His Church, remembering that moment when the waters of baptism claimed us for Christ and we became disciples of Him who died and rose for us. The newness of life is spiritual awakening that moves us to Go out to all the world and tell the Good News. Mk 16:15. We have a responsibility to all our brothers and sisters to help them discover Christ and to rediscover Christ in their lives. So, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone who has been away from church to consider returning during this joyful season of Easter. I would really like to invite you to consider joining a church family to worship God. There you might find inspiration through the Sacred Scriptures or a sermon which makes life more livable. Together in song, people praise the Lord for His goodness and for His glory. The resurrection of Christ from the grave has changed our world forever. It also changes how we live and how we die. It is the rock foundation of our hope in God. This is the Joy of Easter, that Christ Jesus Lives forever and offers us eternal life. Fr. 5 St. Joseph Compassion Fund The Knights presented a check for $12, to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Compassion Fund. Thank you to everyone who supported our Valentine s Day Gala and Raffle. Community Compassion Fund of St. Joseph s The purpose of the newly funded Community Compassion Fund is to provide any resident of Madison County with financial assistance in the form of food cards from Fareway ($20 cards that prohibit use for alcohol or tobacco), $20 gas cards through Wight & Short (Winterset Oil Company), partial payments for utilities and rent, minor vehicle repairs and other one-time assistance needs. However, St. Joseph and St. Patrick s Irish Settlement have already been providing these services for many, many years. This community ministry is administered through the St. Joseph office (Pat Barker, Fr. Tom and Mike Drysdale) and in coordination with the MATURA and CRISP programs. An individual or family can only avail themselves of the program once every six months. In addition, St. Patrick s parish has a monthly special collection for the Madison-Warren Ecumenical Association and donates around $2,500 annually to this group which provides social and financial services to residents in the I-35 and Martensdale-St. Mary s school districts. The parish also has special collections for the St Vincent de Paul Society. St. Patrick s Altar & Rosary Society puts on an annual auction to raise funds to assist families in need. In the past two years, their efforts have raised and donated over $2,800. Over the past few years, St. Joseph has paid an average of $4,600 in financial assistance to the community of Madison County in the services mentioned above. These payments have come from your Sunday collection tithing, thereby reducing the money available to support the operation of the church. Recognizing this community assistance need, the Knights of Columbus chose to support the Compassion Fund by providing funding to meet the needs of this ministerial assistance program. The Knights held the Valentine Dinner Gala from which they contributed $9,375 to establish the Compassion Fund, and this amount has been augmented with a $1,000 donation from the St. Joseph Altar & Rosary Society and $2,310 in donations from St. Joseph s and St. Patrick s parishioners and from other community members. As a result, the Compassion Fund has received a total of $12,685 in donations as of mid-march. Over the past eight months, this ministry has paid out $3,306 in financial assistance to the community. It is the intent of the Knights and the parish office that this initial funding last for two years until a second Valentine Gala can be organized (perhaps). In the meantime, ongoing cash contributions or Fareway gift cards can be donated at the St. Joseph office in order that this valuable community ministry can continue its appreciated work. A heartfelt thank you is extended to everyone for the constant generosity that you have always given to the parish and the needy in our communities.
