Please help us in that process by having your portrait taken for the new church directory. All participants will receive a free 8x10, as well as a free pictorial directory. This directory will even be a part of a new church app so that you can find contact information or directions to someone s home with the touch of a button! Online registration is available Monday (noon) - Friday (midnight). This feature will be closed over the weekend so that we can offer physical sign-ups on Sundays. Physical sign-ups will be available in the narthex before and after worship October 7th. For online registration go to and click on the Scheduling box on the right. From there you will be asked to enter a username and password. 4 Page 4 Dear Parents, The Fall Retreat is on Friday, October 12 from 6:00 pm to Saturday, October 13 at 6:00 pm. The Retreat will take place at Tom and Taryn Hurlbert s property: 5447 North Bass Lake Rd Irons, MI Tom has a passion and a degree in Camp ministry and has helped me plan the retreat along with the Olympic Games on Saturday. Students and leaders will be sleeping in tents and we will have two portable toilets on site. 5 Page 5 OCTOBER 2018 As of September 30, 2018 September was a solid giving month with five Sundays. On a per Sunday basis, the church received $4,729 above what is needed to achieve budget. For YTD, giving is now $1,212 favorable to budget. We continue to have Building Fund contributions trickle in. All of these additional contributions will be reserved for Building improvements or other building or facility-related expenses. All spending categories are within budget except for Mission Support. Annual support for most of the church's supported missionaries is paid in advance so this is an expected situation that will resolve itself by the end of the year. The General Fund of the church has spent $16, less than what has been received. Cash position remains strong. Overall, the church has $416,990 in the bank. Over half of this amount is for various escrow/reserve accounts with money that has is restricted for these uses. Detail on these accounts is on page 2 of the financial report. The church has $168,705 in cash that is available for supporting general operations and building expenses. Approximately $70,000 is invested in interest-bearing Certificates of Deposit. All in all, the church is in good financial health which is very encouraging as we consider another year's budget and dream about what the church, the facilities, and the campus may look like in the upcoming years. 6 Page 6 Likely we ve probably all noticed that Pastors Chad, Mike, David, and others have initiated many Sunday services with a statement referencing First Baptist Church as an intergenerational church relative to worship services and many other activities. For me, that declaration has a special ring symbolizing that we are a gathering comprised of men, women, and children of differing ages, backgrounds, lifestyles, and means dedicated to praising and serving Christ collectively as one body. While driving home following a recent Sunday service, the term surfaced in my thoughts. I reflected on its meaning wondering if my understanding of intergenerational was generally consistent with others in the congregation. And, how did my comprehension of the term mesh with its literal definition based on sources one might commonly refer to such as a dictionary. My pondering went further leading me to question how academia or the world in general might employ the term. What about the Bible? Does God s Word address the idea of intergenerational worship? I decided to do a bit of investigating. The dictionary was very succinct in defining intergenerational as being or occurring between generations. An array of Internet sites regularly INTERGENERATIONAL- The World and Scripture By Jerry Adams described the term as being or occurring between generations and as relating to, involving, or affecting several generations. One source noted that intergenerational is an adjective comprised of the prefix inter and the root word generational or simply generation. The term inter was defined as between, among, in the midst of, mutually, reciprocally, and together. Generation was defined in a variety of ways. It was commonly expressed as all of the people born and living at about the same time, regarded collectively. Another frequently identified definition articulated generation as the average period, generally considered to be about thirty years, during which children are born and grow up, become adults, and begin to have children of their own. In describing intergenerational the academic world, with its plethora of disciplines, often applied the saying employing lifestyle characteristics or unique time periods as a means of differentiating generations. Two of these are in relatively frequent use and expressed as follows. Several fields of study place generations into capsules of time based on birth years during which certain events and/or lifestyle distinctions have occurred or are taking place. These are commonly referenced in newspaper and magazine articles, television, the Internet, and other outlets. Depending on the academic source, the age ranges and lifestyle descriptors vary somewhat. Generally, they include the Cyber Generation (Generation Z) reflecting those born since 2002; Millennials (Generation Y) for people born between 1982 and 2001; the 13 th Generation (Generation X) if born between 1960 and 1981; Baby Boomers for those born between 1943 and 1960; the Silent Generation when born between 1925 and 1942; the G.I. Generation if born between 1901 and 1924; and, the Lost Generation when born between 1883 and 1900.

7 Page 7 OCTOBER 2018 Some sources attempt to bracket generations into a range of life phases or family stages often varying significantly in age range. For example, these include Pre- School Children (Infants to Toddlers); School-Agers to Pre- Teens; Teens to Young Adults; Family Formers; Empty Nesters; and, Seniors. Given the increasing longevity of people in the United States and elsewhere, a few sources divide the senior phase into the categories of New Retirees and Golden Agers. Quite frankly, I liked the division of the senior phase. Having become a New Retiree several years ago, it pleases me to imagine I may still have another phase to go, with God s blessings of course. What about the Bible? Does the Bible mention anything about generations? If so, does the Bible also address the need and/or desire for intergenerational worship? While not defined, one finds the term generation to regularly appear in Scripture. Scripture reveals God s desire that people of one generation would tell of His works to the next generation, and that people of every generation would unite to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Regarding intergenerational, the term does not appear to be specifically referenced in Scripture. However, the uniting and sharing of the Good News as detailed in the Bible seems to manifestly qualify as meeting the definition of the term and consistent with the teachings of Christ and His followers. Let s look at a few of the many sources found in Scripture. Deuteronomy 31:12-13 (KJV) - Gather the people together, men and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the Lord your God, and observe to do all the words of this law: 13 And that their children, which have not known anything, may hear, and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess. Psalm 145:4 (KJV) - One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts. Joel 1:3 (NIV) - Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation. Matthew 14:21 (NIV) (The parable of Jesus feeding an intergenerational crowd) - The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. For me, these verses and others indicate that the combined worship of generations, however one might define them, is consistent with scripture and desired by our Heavenly Father. As for concluding my limited investigation culminating with a definitive take on how generation should be defined or how best to express our worship experience as intergenerational, I m still exploring or diving deep into the matter as Pastor Chad instructs us to do. Accordingly, until convinced otherwise, I ve decided to employ my original thought mentioned at the beginning of this article. That is, we are a gathering comprised of men, women, and children of differing ages, backgrounds, lifestyles, and means dedicated to praising and serving Christ collectively as one body. 8 Page 8 Newsletter Title HAITI CLEAN WATER Civil and political rights are critical, but not often the real problem for the destitute sick. My patients in Haiti can now vote but they can't get medical care or clean water. - Dr. Paul Farmer Haiti s water is contaminated. Even though there are many wells in Haiti, the water coming from the wells is contaminated. The people have to buy drinkable water or try to sterilize it in some way. Some add chlorine (which tastes bad and over time is not healthy). Some boil it but there is a shortage of fuel and fuel is expensive. Because clean water is scarce many people limit the amount they drink and end up dehydrated. Many can t afford to buy the water so they drink the contaminated water. Therefore, many people, especially children get sick. We provide clean drinkable water to people through the use of Biosand Water Filters. Each filter serves 10 people for approximately 10 years. Each filter costs $128 (the price has increased due to shipping costs) At this time, we need your help. 10 Page 10 Volume 1, Issue 1 KING S STOREHOUSE FOOD PANTRY Did you know that Marv and Carol Bogard have been overseeing the FBC Food Pantry (King s Storehouse Food Pantry) for over 12 years? During this time the ministry has grown immensely! Food is distributed three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) from 10 AM 11 AM. But this is not the only time that food pantry work is happening. The King s Storehouse partners with the Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency 1640 Marty Paul St off 13th St). The NMCAA has an Emergency Food Program that is able to distribute goods to the local pantries. When NMCAA has food boxes available, someone has to be willing to pick these up and unload into our pantry. There is also Feeding America West Michigan (101 Clay Drive off Boon Road). This is a clearinghouse that allows us to purchase food for pennies on the dollar as the purchase price is actually based on weight rather than quantity. Then there is the regular shopping trips to Meijer whose workers are on a first name basis with Marv and Carol. When supplies run low in the pantry someone Marv and Carol Bogard Food Pantry Coordinators needs to see this and head to Meijer to buy items in large quantities. This isn t your typical shopping trip, buying items off the shelf as one would most likely clear them out. No, it is picking up cases from the back. Then returning to restock and organize. We are looking for volunteers for this ministry to make a large job smaller and more manageable. How could you help? On-Call Volunteer would you be willing to help unload boxes and organize product in the food pantry? Volunteer to be on-call. NWMCAA Volunteer serve once a month (first Thursday) from 9 AM Noon stocking shelves at the warehouse on Marty Paul St. Meijer Volunteer do you like grocery shopping? We are looking for a couple or two to take trips to Meijer for pick up and unpacking. Cleaning Volunteer once a year (between Christmas and New Year) the food pantry receives a thorough cleaning. From defrosting freezers to cleaning shelves. Many hands make light work! This ministry is great for all ages. Would you consider serving together as a family?
