1 Dillon Community Church Ministry Plan As disciples of Jesus, our mission is to love, serve, and teach.

2 1. INTRODUCTION Churches, by definition, are organizations comprised of congregants in need of vision and direction. In the absence of vision, churches lose their purpose and focus and begin to accommodate themselves to their surrounding cultural climate or entrench themselves in or-der to fill safe. When this happens, most members fail to grasp the mission of their church in the world. In order to fulfill the mission of God (missio Dei) in Summit County, it is critical that we retain our focus on representing the righteousness of God to the surrounding culture. When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices (Prov 11:10). This Ministry Plan presents ministry goals over the next year that fulfill our purpose and mission, and is in keeping with our values. 2. TERMS 2.1. Mission: a statement that answers the question, What are we supposed to be doing? 2.2. Values: Those permanent qualities that define the culture of DCC and answer the question, What do we stand for? 2.3. Vision: Statements that answer the question, What will we look like in the future? 2.4. Ministry Objective: Statements that answer the question, What areas do we need to focus on in order to fulfill our vision? 2.5. Goal: Statements that answer the question, What will we do this year to complete our ministry objectives? 3. MISSION, VALUES, AND VISION 3.1. Mission Statement The mission statement answers the question, What are we supposed to be doing? The elders have approved the following mission statement: As disciples of Christ, our mission is to love, serve, and teach Values Values help us assign worth and importance to ideas, attitudes, and actions, and answer the question, What do we stand for? Thus, they communicate what is important in the way we relate to one another and address overall behavior. In order to answer the question, What do we stand for? the DCC leadership has developed the following values that will guide overall behavior at DCC: Prayer. We value prayer as an integral means of growing a deep and abiding relationship with God. We desire prayer to be part of both the member s personal life and the corporate experience DCC Ministry Plan

3 Strong relationships with God. We value strong and growing relationships with God. We desire our members walks to match their talks. Within the corporate set-ting, we desire to see the spiritual disciplines evidenced in the congregation, resulting in obvious passion for serving the Lord Strong teaching and relevant communication of biblical truth. We value teaching that is biblical and in agreement with our statement of faith. We desire the teaching to be culturally relevant and transparent in order to draw the congregation deeper into God s word Unity in Spirit. We value the unity of the Spirit brought about through the work of Christ. We desire to work hard to maintain this unity and to maintain a balance between truth and grace. We also desire to create an environment of openness and safety wherein the congregation is encouraged and invited to engage in civil dis-course, including areas in which the church has historically disagreed Community of the Saints. We value genuine and authentic community wherein the congregation can find refreshment and safety to grow in their respective areas of brokenness. We desire that this be evidenced by the shepherding of each other, the equipping of the members for ministry and spiritual life, and the deepening of relationships with one another Social conscience to our neighbors. We value a thriving conscience for the social well-being of our neighbors. We desire our county to come to know Christ and realize that action in areas such as social justice, brokenness, evangelizing, caring for the hurting and marginalized, etc., is a vital goal in this process. We also desire to engage our congregants in the mission of God in Summit County and around the world Vision In order to explore what our church looks like in the future, we have developed the following three vision statements for the period Loving we will cultivate our commitment to Christ-like character Serving we will prioritize Christ-like engagement in community Teaching we will equip with Scripture in safe and life-giving ways DCC Ministry Plan

4 4. LOVING DRAFT 4.1. Vision: We will cultivate our commitment to Christ-like character Ministry Objectives: Nurture a church culture motivated to honor God by loving others Elders: Encourage DCC members and attenders twice each year through personal contact and Advent devotions. (JH) Elders: Explore how to bring value and significance to former elders of DCC. (JH) Women: Emphasize interpersonal relationships to grow in intimacy/connection to other women. (JM) Children: Meet with DCC families to find out how to best love them with future goals and new leadership. (JA) Outreach: a welcoming environment in the Food Bank to model more loving and personal care between visitors and helpers. (JM) Outreach: Move more assertively through the Benevolence Committee to show the love of God to servants in our county. (JM) Outreach: Improve communication between the Missions Committee and existing missionaries to encourage their work in transforming lives in their mission fields. (JM & MH) Devote ourselves to each other in seeking the Spirit s transforming power Elders: Work with elders and staff to understand and more fully live out their spiritual giftedness and set the example within the relationships at DCC. (JH) Elders: Develop a strategy for the changing dynamics on the Board. (JH) Students: Cultivate a youth group culture where students help the marginalized feel included and engaged. (SS) Students: Nurture a posture of prayer in every student, helper, and the STAB. (SS) Musical Worship: Partner with Children s Ministry and Rob Schmidt to produce an original musical voiced from a child s perspective during the Advent season. (MH & JA) Administration: Evaluate all programming and events to determine extent of pastoral involvement and shepherding and identify any needed changes (JH, MH, & JM) DCC Ministry Plan

5 5. SERVING DRAFT 5.1. Vision: We will prioritize Christ-like engagement in community Ministry Objectives: Together identify and meet current community needs Elders: Update documents and systems to protect and enable DCC ministries to thrive in an ever-changing world, including potential needed statements regarding lifestyle commitments. (JM & JH) Elders: Develop needed statements regarding marriage and healthy human sexuality, and lifestyle commitments. (JH) Adults: Teach one seminar on strategies for engaging in the broader Summit County including sharing our faith, serving our neighbor, meeting the needs of others, etc. (JH) Children: Develop a method to evaluate the children s ministry programming and events to assess effectiveness within our changing culture. (JA) Children: Establish more streamlined ways of obtaining and conveying information to ease stress on helpers. (JA) Children: The Children s Ministry Director will visit other churches to broaden her knowledge of her ministry. (JA) Outreach: Contact the VBS parents not connected to other churches and see how we might love them more. (JH) Outreach: Develop an Outreach Committee to oversee all aspects of DCC outreach ministries. (JH, MH, & JM) Outreach: Evaluate DCCs role in equipping supported missionaries. (JM) Musical Worship: Sustain and nourish the current culture for participants and congregants while developing another point vocalist. (MH) Musical Worship: Collaborate with the Town of Dillon the Sunday morning services at the amphitheater in light of modifications. (MH) Mental Health: Develop a strategy for counseling services offered to the DCC congregation and the external community. (JH, MH, & JM) Staff: Develop next-step priorities and investments for Assistant Pastor following completion of his MDiv program. (MH & JH) Administration: Redesign the communication process with DCC DCC Ministry Plan

6 6. TEACHING DRAFT attenders to both streamline and capture the ongoing ministry culture of DCC. (JH) Administration: Install a finance committee to work with the facilities committee and church administrator. (JH & JM) Administration: Evaluate DCC campus to maximize potential use in order to best serve current ministry needs and anticipate future needs, including mental health and library needs. (JM) Develop a theology of serving God by serving others Adults: Preach one series on a theology of service and what it means to serve others. (JH) Adults: Redesign the process of recruiting DCC attenders to serve in needed ministries. (JH) Adults: Develop within the hospitality leadership an enthusiasm, purpose and the importance of hospitality as the stabilizing face of DCC on Sundays. (JM & JH) Women: Develop a theology of Christian service. (JM) Men: Complete a theological study of Christian service in Iron Hour. (MH & JH) Students: Using the student leadership team, design at least one community service event for local neighborhoods (i.e., Summit Cove, Dillon Valley etc.) (SS) Students: In collaboration with Summit Ecumenical Youth, design an event to serve Summit together. (SS) Students: Evaluate with the STAB and SLT the practice of working with the Food Bank. (SS) Children: Encourage helpers to seek God before serving and to honor him in their serving efforts. (JA) Children: Develop a posture of service from parents whose children participate in CM programs. (JA) 6.1. Vision: We will equip with Scripture in safe and live-giving ways Ministry Objectives: Cultivate spiritual growth through relationships Adults: Redesign the onboarding and integration process for new members through the Inquirer s Class. (JH) Adults: Expand Christian education opportunities. (JH & MH) Adults: Develop a strategy to both identify and equip future DCC Ministry Plan

7 teachers in Christian Education. (JH & MH) Students: Foster a reciprocal teaching culture where students engage their world and the Bible while developing an overarching narrative of Scripture. (SS) All Church: Develop an age development philosophy for educating and maturing the DCC family from cradle to grave. (JH, MH, SS, & JA) All Church: Articulate a church-wide strategy of special events to connect attenders with each other including retreats, dinners, events, etc. (JH, JM, & MH) Teach the value of understanding the heart and mind of God Adults: Develop a more intentional intergenerational discipling culture to better cultivate spiritual life in DCC attenders. (JH & MH) Women: Provide training for the leadership team in relationship-building and spiritual/educational programming. (JM) Students: Provide leaders with resources to develop discipling relationships with students. (SS) Students: Work with the STAB to develop better practices of discipling students. (SS) Students: Develop personal leadership and administrative skills using global and local resources. (SS) Children: Develop better understanding of Scripture in Sunday School and VBS so that participants and helpers may understand more about their relationship with Christ. (JA) Musical Worship: Provide education to help the congregation understand why intergenerational collaboration is important in musical worship. (MH) Staff: Develop a next-step plan for others on Staff to experience structured on-going theological education. (MH & JH) DCC Ministry Plan
