1 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN Redeemer Lutheran Church Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 The First Sunday After Christmas Saturday, December 27, :30 pm Sunday, December 28, :00 & 10:40 am Our Mission Statement: As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our family of believers. Our Theme: Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical characters made our Lord known in unique ways. In December, we remember Eunice and Lois who made Him known to the next generation. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our Welcome Center in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is Little Linuses. Linus s speech in the Charlie Brown Christmas Special is powerful! Well, guess what? Our congregation is full of little Linuses and their words are just as powerful! Praise God! TODAY S WORSHIP (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the service. OPENING Away In A Manger Chancel Chimes GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (We welcome our fellow worshipers.) 2 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (5:30 pm/10:40 am) SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM (congregation s welcome) P: In Holy Baptism, God the Father has made you a member of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We receive you in Jesus name as our brothers/sister in Christ, that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. C: Amen. We welcome you in the name of the Lord. P: And the Lord bless you in all your ways from this time forth and forevermore. C: Amen. (The service will continue with the Hymn of Praise. Please stand to sing.) (*) INVOCATION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (*) CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 78:1-7) P: O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, from of old what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us. C: We will not hide them from our children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which He commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.. P: Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. (*) HYMN OF PRAISE (tune LSB 802) The Lord is our teacher. We hear His sweet Word. Our fathers have told us the message we ve heard; Of greatness and glory, of patience and care; We tell of His mercy, His grace we will share. So tell of this story, repeat it again, To each generation, His glory will reign! From past and through present, to history s end, His love and His grace He will faithfully send. (Please be seated.) -2-

3 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. You have blessed this congregation with a legacy of faith, young to old gathering together. Continue to impact all generations as we hear the good news of great joy through the mouths of children; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (Please be seated.) (Sunday) ANTHEM O Come Little Children Chancel Chimes SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Reading for First Sunday After Christmas is from Isaiah chapter sixty-one. 10 I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. 1 For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet, till her vindication shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. 2 The nations will see your vindication, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow. 3 You will be a crown of splendor in the Lord 's hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. Isaiah 61:10-62:3 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle lesson is from the first chapter of Ephesians. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. -3-

4 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:3-14 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) ALLELUIA AND VERSE (*) HOLY GOSPEL L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. 41 Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents -4-

5 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you." 49 "Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them. 51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. Luke 2:40-52 NIV L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. (Please be seated.) (*) CHRISTMAS CREED I believe in God the Father, Creator of all things, who sent His Son as my Savior. I believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, announced by angels, worshiped by the Wise Men; who lived to suffer, die, and rise again, to free me from sin, death and the power of the devil. I believe in the Holy Spirit, who has brought me to faith in the Christ and by whose continuous work in my heart I am ever led to lay before the feet of Christ my worship, my life, my love, to live under Him as my King, both now and forevermore. Amen. (Please be seated.) CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) HYMN OF THE DAY Go Tell It On The Mountain... LSB 358, st. 1,6-7, From heav n above to earth I come To bear good news to ev ry home; Glad tidings of great joy I bring, Whereof I now will say and sing: 6 How glad we ll be to find it so! Then with the shepherds let us go To see what God for us has done In sending us His own dear Son. 14 My heart for very joy must leap; My lips no more can silence keep. I, too, must sing with joyful tongue That sweetest ancient cradlesong: 15 Glory to God in highest heav n, Who unto us His Son has giv n! While angels sing with pious mirth A glad new year to all the earth. 7 Come here, my friends, lift up your eyes, And see what in the manger lies. Who is this child, so young and fair? It is the Christ Child lying there. Acknowledgments Divine Service, Setting Four from Lutheran Service Book 2006 Concordia Publishing House. Reprinted with permission. 9 Special Adult Forum Sunday, January 4, :20 to 10:20 am Should Redeemer Call a Second Full-Time DCE? The Redeemer Church Council and the Vision Task Force have been prayerfully looking at the future needs of Redeemer. From these discussions and a brainstorming done at the Voters Meeting last May, these groups have formed three Guiding Principles that align with Redeemer s mission statement and provide Redeemer with direction as we move forward in ministry. The three Guiding Principles are: Strengthen our members and facility as a launching pad for ministry Fostering relationships to strengthen youth and families Share the joy of the gospel in word and deed locally and globally One specific and powerful opportunity these Guiding Principles point us to, is the potential of calling a second full-time DCE. With the last mortgage payment going out in December (2014), with ministry opportunities going unmet here at Redeemer and in Rochester, and with the possibility of adding increased depth and attention to current ministries, this is an exciting and opportune time to seriously consider calling a second DCE. To explore what this could mean, there will be an information sharing time during the adult education hour (9:20-10:20) on January 4, The Church Council needs your input and direction before formulating a recommendation for the Voters Meeting. We pray many will participate in this discussion and then join us for the Voters meeting on January 18, to discuss more opportunities our Mission and Guiding Principles are point us to. 10 COLD Symptoms that build over 48 hours Runny nose, watery eyes Stuffy nose, congestion, sneezing, coughing Symptoms may last 3 10 days FLU Fast onset of symptoms (especially fever and chills) Body aches and pains Weakness and fatigue Symptoms may last 7 14 days; may linger up to 3 weeks For that annoying common cold Mayo Clinic s website offers these suggestions: Drink lots of fluids (water, juice, clear broth, warm lemon water) Soothe your throat (A saltwater gargle of ¼ to ½ teaspoon salt dissolved in an 8-oz glass of warm water can temporarily relieve a sore, scratchy throat) Adjust room temperature (keep room warm, but not overheated) and humidity (a cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer can moisten the air and ease congestion and coughing (Be sure to keep humidifier clean to prevent growth of mold and bacteria) Use saline nasal drops to help relieve nasal congestion (for use of nasal drops in infants visit the website below for instructions) Get some rest (If possible stay home from school or work; this will also help reduce the chances of infecting others) And how about Mom s Chicken Soup? Give it a try! Scientists have discovered that it does seem to help relieve cold and flu symptoms in two ways. First, it acts as an antiinflammatory by inhibiting the movement of immune system cells that help the body s responses to inflammation. Secondly, it temporarily speeds up the movement of mucus through the nose, helping relieve congestion and limiting the time viruses are in contact with the nasal lining. Well, who knew! 14 Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 Hymn Notes: Will return in a couple weeks...merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Eunice and Lois: Making Him Known To The Next Generation BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. Luke 2:40 NIV POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: How has God used you to bless a Li le Linus? How has God used a Li le Linus to bless you? Name some places where you can foster a rela onship with a Linus at Redeemer and in our community.... Take it Home This is our first week with our new character for the month, Nicodemus. He is a person who came to Jesus at night with many ques ons about what it was that Jesus was teaching. He most notably asked about how one can be born again. I am certain we all have mes where we have ques ons about the faith. However many mes we feel as though we shouldn t be having or even asking the ques ons that are going through our heads. Let s be honest though, none of us have the Chris an life completely figured out. We are all living this life together. God calls us the body of Christ rather than the individuals of Christ for a reason. We are brought together in order to help one another. Just like Nicodemus went to Jesus for answers we can pray our ques ons to God as well as talk and discuss with those God has put around us. My challenge to you this week is to start off with praying your ques ons to God. You may be surprised how he chooses, or who he sends in your life, to answer the ques on.
