1 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN Redeemer Lutheran Church Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 The Second Sunday In Advent Saturday, December 6, :30 pm Sunday, December 7, :00 & 10:40 am Our Mission Statement: As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our family of believers. Our Theme: Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical characters made our Lord known in unique ways. In December, we remember Eunice and Lois who made Him known to the next generation. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our Welcome Center in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is Handing Down God s Unchanging Word to the Next Generation. Can you imagine the world we would live in if we had no record of Christ s birth, life, death, and resurrection? Rather than take the Bible for granted, we will want to share this with our children and grandchildren as Eunice and Lois did long ago. We Come Into God s Presence (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the service. GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (We welcome our fellow worshipers.) HYMN Hark The Glad Sound... 2 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (Saturday) SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM (congregation s welcome) P: In Holy Baptism, God the Father has made you a member of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We receive you in Jesus name as our sisters in Christ, that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. C: Amen. We welcome you in the name of the Lord. P: And you, Sophia and Payton, the Lord bless you in all your ways from this time forth and forevermore. C: Amen. (The service will continue with the Hymn of Praise. Please stand to sing.) (*) INVOCATION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (*) CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 78:1-7) P: O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, from of old what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us. C: We will not hide them from our children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which He commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.. P: Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. (*) HYMN OF PRAISE (tune LSB 802) The Lord is our teacher. We hear His sweet Word. Our fathers have told us the message we ve heard; Of greatness and glory, of patience and care; We tell of His mercy, His grace we will share. So tell of this story, repeat it again, To each generation, His glory will reign! From past and through present, to history s end, His love and His grace He will faithfully send. (Please be seated.) 3 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament reading for the Second Sunday In Advent is from Isaiah chapter forty. 1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord 's hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice of one calling: "In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5 And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken." 6 A voice says, "Cry out." And I said, "What shall I cry?" "All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. 7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever." 9 You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, "Here is your God!" 10 See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. 11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Isaiah 40:1-11 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle reading is from third chapter of 2 Peter. 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 2 Peter 3:8-14 NIV -3-

4 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) ALLELUIA AND VERSE (*) HOLY GOSPEL L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way" 3 "a voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. '" 4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: "After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1:1-8 NIV L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. (Please be seated.) CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) -4-

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, whose way John the Baptist prepared, proclaiming Him the promised Messiah, the very Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and calling sinners to repentance that they might escape from the wrath to be revealed when He comes again in glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:: (*) SANCTUS (*) LORD'S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. -6-

12 Enterovirus D68 Part I The reporting of the Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) earlier this fall among school-age children was not the reporting of a new virus; it was first identified in California in 1962, and is one of more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses. In general, a mix of enteroviruses circulates every year, and different types of enterovisuses can be common in different years. However, this year the number of people reported with confirmed EV-D68 infection is much greater than has been reported in previous years. EV-D68 can cause a mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms that may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, body and muscle aches. Severe symptoms may include wheezing and difficulty breathing. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reports that there is no vaccine for preventing EV-D68 infections, noting that children with asthma are at risk for severe symptoms from EV-D68 and other respiratory illnesses. As a result, the CDC recommends that people with asthma and children suffering from reactive airway disease should: Discuss and update your Asthma Action Plan with your primary care provider. Take your prescribed asthma medications as directed, especially long-term control medications(s). Be sure to keep your reliever medication with you. Get a flu vaccine when available. If you develop new of worsening asthma symptoms, follow the steps of you Asthma Action Plan. If your symptoms do not go away, call your doctor right away. Parents should make sure the child s caregiver and/or teacher is aware of the child s condition, and that the caregiver knows how to help if the child experiences symptoms related to asthma. Information taken from: Next week - Enterovirus D68 Part II How the virus spreads and how to protect yourself. THREE WISE MEN AND A BABY presented by Rochester Central Lutheran School, students in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Come and listen as the story is told from the view point of the star that led the wise men to Bethlehem. This program begins at 6:30 pm, on Friday, December 12, in the RCLS gym. 4 Week of

16 Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 Eunice and Lois: Making Him Known To The Next Generation BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: But as for you, con nue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salva on through faith in Christ Jesus. 2Timothy 3:14 15 POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: Who are the people that first shared God s Word with me? In what ways did they do this? How might I share this precious gi with future genera ons? Hymn Notes: Handing down God s word! What an awesome task we have to share! Hymns are an extension of God s Word as most hymns are based off of Scripture. Can you think of a hymn that your parents or grandparents used to sing to you? Today we sing one that I remember both my mom and my grandma singing to me and my sister not only in English but also in German, God Loves Me Dearly, LSB 392. I now sing the very same hymn to my daughter and share that memory with her. Let music help guide you with what you pass on to your children they will remember! Take it Home If you are reading this I am going to make a guess that passing on God s Word is important to you. We all know that many things in life that are important are not always easy! Sharing God s Word is not one of these difficult things. Sharing God s Word is as easy as reading a passage, sharing one from memory, or listening to God s Word sung in a Hymn or song. The only hard thing is that the Devil HATES us passing on God s Word. He will bring distrac on, frustra on, fear, confusion whenever possible. Many mes these li le hurdles are more than enough to stop us from reading God s Word and sharing it with others. What is the answer? BEING IN GOD S WORD and prayer! There is no fast ac ng pill, robo c implant, or secret move. Your favorite athlete, ar st, actor prac ces their cra constantly. As Chris ans we should never think that spiritual strength should just happen? Spiritual strength grows as we encounter life s joys and challenges through the lens of Word and Prayer. It is at these mes that Christ brings growth! If we encounter life without Word and Prayer there is not nutrient in the soil. This week try to increase your me in God s Word by ONE. One more minute, one more verse, ones more prayer. As a family do the same. When you are in the Word you will be amazed at how it will naturally pour out of you into others. God will make a way!
