Welcome in the name of Jesus Christ! We thank God that you have joined us this morning for worship. If you are visiting with us, we thank God you are here and pray our worship together will be a mutual blessing. If you are looking for a church home, we hope Abiding Savior can meet your needs. Please introduce yourself to one of the Pastors. We ask both members and visitors to kindly fill out attendance cards and pass them to the center aisle. The ushers will gather them during the Sermon Hymn which follows the Children s Message. Feel free to add a prayer request for the Pastor to include in the congregational prayer. We love children here at Abiding Savior. Parents are encouraged to sit in the front pews so that young children can see what is happening during worship. If you should want to make use of our cry room or nursery, please ask one of our ushers for directions. Ministers Rev. Dr. Thomas Rogers... Senior Pastor Rev. Glenn Lucas... Associate Pastor Rev. 2 Order of Worship Holy Trinity Sunday Sunday, May 22, :00 & 10:45 a.m. WELCOME OPENING HYMN Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! CHRIS ROGERS OGERS, ORGANIST INVOCATION Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow r, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Text: Refinald Heber, Text & Music: Public Domain Tune: John B. Dykes, ; setting: The Worshipbook: Services and Hymns, 1972 LSB 507 Used by Permission. LSBHymnLicense.net # Pastor: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! Worshippers are invited to kneel for the Confession and Absolution. Those who desire not to kneel may sit or stand. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, 2

we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to t the glory of Your holy name. Pastor: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, Who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM 10:45 a.m. ORDER OF BAPTISM Invocation Pastor: We celebrate today the blessings God has given us. We remember the grace given through Baptism, and we gather at the Baptismal font for new life and new hope. Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ, we come before the Lord today to welcome a new member into the Kingdom of God. Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. Come, creating Father. Pastor: Jesus said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age. Come, Lord Jesus. Pastor: Jesus also said, I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. Come, Holy Spirit. 3

Pastor: Delany Ann Blum, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead and upon your heart, to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified. Micah Robert Blum, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead and upon your heart, to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified. Let us pray. Lord God, Heavenly Father, we present these children of Your own creation, given to us as a blessing to Your church. We know each one of us is born sinful into a sinful world, darkened from Your light. Give to Delany and Micah and to all of us the light of Your presence, now and forever. Confession of Faith Pastor: It is your task as parents and sponsors to confess before God your intention to see that Delany and Micah are brought up in the Christian faith. As a part of your responsibilities you are to remember Delany and Micah in your prayers, to teach them the 10 Commandments, the Creed, and the Lord s Prayer. As they grow in years you are to put in their hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for their further instruction in the Christian faith that in fellowship with the church they may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ. Do you promise to fulfill these obligations? Parents & Sponsors: I do. Pastor: It is good and right that we should all confess with the church what God works in and through Baptism. So I ask do you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways? I do renounce them. Pastor: Let us confess the new life of hope Delany and Micah will receive. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 4

Baptism Pastor: It is written in Titus, chapter 3, But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. Pastor: Into this Christian faith we now baptize Delany Ann Blum. Delany Ann Blum, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and in the name of the Son, and in the name of the Holy Spirit. Amen! Pastor: Into this Christian faith we now baptize Micah Robert Blum. Micah Robert Blum, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and in the name of the Son, and in the name of the Holy Spirit. Amen! Blessing Pastor: We offer two symbols of the new life found in Christ, that you, Delany, and you, Micah, children of God, may remember the grace found today in baptism. Receive this white garment, to show that Christ has taken all of your sin and clothed you in perfect righteousness. Receive also this burning light, to remind you to live always by Christ s light in a world darkened by sin. Let this light be a comfort and guide all your days. May the Lord, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you with His grace to life everlasting. May He keep you in your baptismal grace, that you may lead a life that will glorify Him. Peace be with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Father of all creation, bless these parents and all our parents. Give to them a heart of rejoicing in the gift You have given them. Grant that they may be enabled to carry out Your work, strengthened in their own faith, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Pastor: Through Baptism God has added Delany and Micah to His own people to declare the wonderful deeds of our Savior, who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. Let us speak these words of blessing and welcome: We welcome you into the Lord s family. We receive you as fellow members of the body of Christ, children of the same heavenly Father, to work with us in His kingdom. Pastor: And you, Delany, and you, Micah, the Lord bless you in all your ways from this time forth and even forever more. Amen! 5

INTROIT (Read Responsively from the Athanasian Creed) Pastor: Whosoever will be saved shall, above all else, hold the catholic faith. Which faith, except everyone keeps it whole and undefiled, without doubt he will perish eternally. Pastor: And the catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance. For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is all one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit. Pastor: The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible. Pastor: The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal. And yet there are not three eternals but one eternal. Pastor: As there are not three uncreated nor three incomprehensibles, but one uncreated and one incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Spirit almighty. HYMN OF PRAISE 8:00 a.m. 6

HYMN OF PRAISE 10:45 a.m. Holy God, We Praise Thy Name Holy God, we praise Thy name; Lord of all, we bow before Thee, All on earth Thy scepter claim, All in heav n above adore Thee. Infinite Thy vast domain, Everlasting is Thy reign. Hark! The glad celestial hymn Angel choirs above are raising; Cherubim and seraphim, In unceasing chorus praising, Fill the heav ns with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord! Holy Father, holy Son, Holy Spirit, three we name Thee; Though in essence only one, Undivided God we claim Thee And, adoring, bend the knee while we own the mystery. Text: Latin, c. 4 th cent; German version, Katholisches Gesangbuch, Vienna, 1774; tr. Clarence A. Walworth, , alt. Text & Music: Public Domain Tune: Katholisches Gesangbuch, Vienna, 1774; setting: The Worshipbook: Services and Hymns, 1972 LSB 940 Used by Permission. LSBHymnLicense.net # SALUTATION AND COLLECT Pastor: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray to the Lord. Almighty and everlasting God, since You have given us, Your servants, grace to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity by the confession of a true faith, and to worship the true Unity in the power of Your divine majesty, keep us also steadfast in this true faith and worship, and defend us ever from all our adversaries; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT READING PROVERBS 8:1-4, Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man. The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth, before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man. 7

Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GRADUAL (the Athanasian Creed, continued) Pastor: So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. And yet there are not three Gods but one God. Pastor: So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord. And yet there are not three Lords but one Lord. L Pastor: For as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge every person by himself to be both God and Lord, So we cannot by the catholic faith say that there are three Gods or three Lords. Pastor: The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. Men: The Son is of the Father alone, not made nor created but begotten. Women: The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. Pastor: And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another; But the whole three persons are coeternal together and coequal, so that in all things, as was said, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshiped. Pastor: He, therefore, that will be saved is compelled thus to think of the Trinity. SECOND READING ACTS 2:14A, But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them. Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him, I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence. Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 8

Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool. Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. We stand for the Holy Gospel: HOLY GOSPEL Pastor: JOHN 8:48-59 The Holy Gospel according to St. John, chapter eight. READING OF HOLY GOSPEL The Jews answered him, Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon? Jesus answered, I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death. The Jews said to him, Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death. Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be? Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, He is our God. But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad. 9

So the Jews said to him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham? Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am. So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord! Worshippers are invited to stand and share the peace of the lord with each other. Children can come down to the chancel steps for the children s message. CHILDREN HILDREN S MESSAGE Prayer and member/guest cards will be collected during the singing of the following hymn: SERMON HYMN The God of Abraham Praise The God of Abr ham praise, Who reigns enthroned above; Ancient of everlasting days And God of love. Jehovah, great I AM! By earth and heav n confessed; I bow and bless the sacred name Forever blest. The God of Abr ham praise, At whose supreme command From earth I rise and seek the joys At His right hand. I all on earth forsake, Its wisdom, fame, and pow r, And Him my only portion make, My shield and tow r. The God of Abr ham praise, Whose all-sufficient grace Shall guide me all my pilgrim days In all my ways. He deigns to call me friend; He calls Himself my God. And He shall save me to the end Through Jesus blood. Though nature s strength decay, And earth and hell withstand, To Canaan s bounds I urge my way At His command. The wat ry deep I pass, With Jesus in my view, And through the howling wilderness My way pursue. Text: Thomas Olivers, , alt. 11 CREED (the Athanasian Creed, continued) Pastor: Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe faithfully the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man. Pastor: God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and man of the substance of his mother, born in the word. Perfect God and perfect man, composed osed of a rational soul and human flesh. Pastor: Equal to the Father with respect to His divinity, less than the Father with respect to His humanity, Who, although he is God and man, he is not two but one Christ: Pastor: One, not by conversion of the divinity into flesh but by the assumption of the humanity into God; One altogether, not by confusion of substance but by unity of person. Pastor: For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ; Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead. Pastor: He ascended into heaven, he sits at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence he will come to judge the living and the dead. At whose coming all men will rise again with their bodies and will give an account of their own works. Pastor: And they that have done good will go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. This is the catholic faith which, except a man believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved. GARING OF OUR TIS AND OFFERINGS God doesn t need our money, but in His grace He gives us the privilege to be stewards of everything He has entrusted to our care. We can do more together than separately. As one body in Christ, our congregation has agreed to offer our first fruits to support ministries and missions that enable us to communicate Christ s love to everyone, everywhere; and our love for Him. Your sacrificial gift enables this holy work. MUSICAL OFFERING 8:00 a.m. Laudamus Te by Natalie Sleeth CHAPEL CHOIR PRAYERS Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God, and for all people according to their needs. Pastor: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. After each petition: 11

Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Pastor: We pray together, Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on o earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory for ever er and ever. BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen! CLOSING HYMN Jesus Shall Reign Jesus shall reign where er the sun Does its successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore Till moons shall wax and wane no more. To Him shall endless prayer be made, And endless praises crown His head; His name like sweet perfume shall rise With ev ry morning sacrifice. People and realms of ev ry tongue Dwell on His love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on His name. Blessings abound where er He reigns: The pris ners leap, unloose their chains, The weary find eternal rest, And all who suffer want are blest. Let ev ry creature rise and bring Honors peculiar to our King; Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud amen. Text: Isaac Watts, , alt. Text & Music: Public Domain Tune: attr.
