Welcome in the name of Jesus Christ! We thank God that you have joined us this morning for worship. If you are visiting with us, we thank God you are here and pray our worship together will be a mutual blessing. If you are looking for a church home, we hope Abiding Savior can meet your needs. Please introduce yourself to one of the Pastors. We ask both members and visitors to kindly fill out attendance cards and pass them to the center aisle. The ushers will gather them during the Sermon Hymn which follows the Children s Message. Feel free to add a prayer request for the Pastor to include in the congregational prayer. We love children here at Abiding Savior. Parents are encouraged to sit in the front pews so that young children can see what is happening during worship. If you should want to make use of our cry room or nursery, please ask one of our ushers for directions. Ministers Rev. Dr. Thomas Rogers... Senior Pastor Rev. Glenn Lucas... Associate Pastor Rev. LSBHymnLicense.net # INVOCATION Pastor: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Worshippers are invited to kneel for the Confession and Absolution. Those who desire not to kneel may sit or stand. Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, 2

we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus s Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Pastor: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, Who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM 10:45 a.m. ORDER OF BAPTISM Invocation Pastor: We celebrate today the blessings God has given us. We remember the grace given through Baptism, and we gather at the Baptismal font for new life and new hope. Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ, we come before the Lord today to welcome a new member into the Kingdom of God. Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. Come, creating Father. Pastor: Jesus said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age. Come, Lord Jesus. Pastor: Jesus also said, I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. Come, Holy Spirit. 3

Pastor: Vaughn Carl Behrens, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead and upon your heart, to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified. Let us pray. Lord God, Heavenly Father, we present a child of Your own creation, given to us as a blessing to Your church. We know each one of us is born sinful into a sinful world, darkened from Your light. Give to Vaughn and to all of us the light of Your presence, now and forever. Confession of Faith Pastor: It is your task as parents and sponsors to confess before God your intention to see that Vaughn is brought up in the Christian faith. As a part of your responsibilities you are to remember Vaughn in your prayers, to teach him the 10 Commandments, the Creed, and the Lord s Prayer. As he grows in years you are to put in his hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for his further instruction in the Christian faith that in fellowship with the church he may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ. Do you promise to fulfill these obligations? Parents & Sponsors: I do. Pastor: It is good and right that we should all confess with the church what God works in and through Baptism. So I ask do you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways? I do renounce them. Pastor: Let us confess the new life of hope Vaughn will receive. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Baptism Pastor: It is written in Titus, chapter 3, But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 4

Pastor: Into this Christian faith we now baptize Vaughn Carl Behrens. Vaughn Carl Behrens, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and in the name of the Son, and in the name of the Holy Spirit. Amen! Blessing Pastor: We offer two symbols of the new life found in Christ, that you, Vaughn, a child of God, may remember the grace found today in baptism. Receive this white garment, to show that Christ has taken all of your sin and clothed you in perfect righteousness. Receive also this burning light, to remind you to live always by Christ s light in a world darkened by sin. Let this light be a comfort and guide all your days. May the Lord, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you with His grace to life everlasting. May He keep you in your baptismal grace, that you may lead a life that will glorify Him. Peace be with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Father of all creation, bless these parents and all our parents. Give to them a heart of rejoicing in the gift You have given them. Grant that they may be enabled to carry out Your work, strengthened in their own faith, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Pastor: Through Baptism God has added Vaughn to His own people to declare the wonderful deeds of our Savior, who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. Let us speak these words of blessing and welcome: We welcome you into the Lord s family. We receive you as a fellow low member of the body of Christ, a child of the same heavenly Father, to work with us in His kingdom. Pastor: And you, Vaughn, the Lord bless you in all your ways from this time forth and even forever more. Amen! HYMN OF PRAISE Let All Together Praise Our God Let all together praise our God Before His glorious throne; Today He opens heav n again To give us His own Son, To give us His own Son. He leaves His heav nly Father s throne, Is born an infant small, And in a manger, poor and lone, Lies in a humble stall, Lies in a humble stall. He undertakes a great exchange, Puts on our human frame, And in return gives us His realm, His glory, and His name, His glory, and His name. 5

Your grace in lowliness revealed, Lord Jesus, we adore And praise to God the Father yield And Spirit evermore; We praise You evermore. Text: Nicolaus Herman, c ; tr. F. Samuel Janzow, , sts. 1, 3-7; tr. August Crull, , st. 2, alt. Tune: Nicolaus Herman, c ; setting: The Lutheran Hymnal, 1941 Text (sts. 1, 3-7): 1969 Concordia Publishing House Text (st. 2) & Music: Public Domain LSB 389 Used by Permission. LSBHymnLicense.net # SALUTATION AND COLLECT Pastor: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. O God, our Maker and Redeemer, You wonderfully created us and in the incarnation of Your Son yet more wondrously restored our human nature. Grant that we may ever be alive in Him who made Himself to be like us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE OLD TESTAMENT READING EXODUS 13:1-3A, The LORD said to Moses, Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine. Then Moses said to the people, Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by a strong hand the LORD brought you out from this place. When the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, you shall set apart to the LORD all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the LORD s. Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. And when in time to come your son asks you, What does this mean? you shall say to him, By a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all the males that first open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

THE EPISTLE READING COLOSSIANS 3: Put on then, as God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. We stand for the Holy Gospel: THE HOLY GOSPEL Pastor: LUKE 2:22-40 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter two. THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL When the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord ) and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel. 7

And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed. And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord! Worshippers are invited to stand and share the peace of the lord with each other. Children can come down to the chancel steps for the children s message. CHILDREN HILDREN S MESSAGE Prayer and member/guest cards will be collected during the singing of the following hymn: SERMON HYMN Now Sing We, Now Rejoice Now sing we, now rejoice, Now raise to heav n our voice; He from whom joy streameth Poor in a manger lies; Not so brightly beameth The sun in yonder skies. Thou my Savior art! Thou my Savior art! Come from on high to me; I cannot rise to Thee. Cheer my wearied spirit, O pure and holy Child; Through Thy grace and merit, Blest Jesus, Lord most mild, Draw me unto Thee! Draw me unto Thee! Now through His Son doth shine The Father s grace divine. Death was reigning o er us Through sin and vanity Till He opened for us A bright eternity. May we praise Him there! May we praise Him there! 8

Oh, where shall joy be found? Where but on heav nly ground? Where the angels singing With all His saints unite, Sweetest praises bringing In heav nly joy and light. Oh, that we were there! TOM ROGERS APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. GATHERING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS God doesn t need our money, but in His grace He gives us the privilege to be stewards of everything He has entrusted to our care. We can do more together than separately. As one body in Christ, our congregation has agreed to offer our first fruits to support ministries and missions that enable us to communicate Christ s love to everyone, everywhere; and our love for Him. Your sacrificial gift enables this holy work. MUSICAL OFFERING THE PRAYERS Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God, and for all people according to their needs. After each petition: Pastor: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Pastor: We pray together, Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory for ever and ever. 9

THE BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. l: Amen! This is the Savior of the world, The Gentiles promised light, God s glory dwelling in our midst, The joy of Israel.
