Welcome in the name of Jesus Christ! We thank God that you have joined us this morning for worship. If you are visiting with us, we thank God you are here and pray our worship together will be a mutual blessing. If you are looking for a church home, we hope Abiding Savior can meet your needs. Please introduce yourself to one of the Pastors. We ask both members and visitors to kindly fill out attendance cards and pass them to the center aisle. The ushers will gather them during the Sermon Hymn which follows the Children s Message. Feel free to add a prayer request for the Pastor to include in the congregational prayer. We love children here at Abiding Savior. Parents are encouraged to sit in the front pews so that young children can see what is happening during worship. If you should want to make use of our cry room or nursery, please ask one of our ushers for directions. Ministers Rev. Glenn Lucas... Pastor Mrs. Donna Lucas... Principal Pam Howard... 2 WELCOME Worship Service of Word and Song The Baptism of our Lord Sunday, January 13 10:15 a.m. OPENING CONGREGATIONAL SONG Please stand. Death Was Arrested Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin, Lost without hope with no place to begin; Your love made a way to let mercy come in, When death was arrested and my life began. Ash was redeemed only beauty remains; My orphan heart was given a name. My mourning grew quiet my feet rose to dance, When death was arrested and my life began. Chorus: Oh Your grace, so free, washes over me. You have made me new, now life begins with You. It s Your endless love pouring down on us. You have made us new, now life begins with You. Released from my chains, I m a pris ner no more. My shame was a ransom He faithfully bore. He cancelled my debt and He called me His friend, When death was arrested and my life began. Chorus Our Savior displayed on a criminal s cross. Darkness rejoiced as though Heaven had lost. But then Jesus arose with our freedom in hand. That s when death was arrested and my life began. Chorus Oh, we re free, free; forever we re free. Come join the song of all the redeemed. Yes, we re free, free; forever amen! When death was arrested and my life began. Repeat When death was arrested and my life began. When death was arrested and my life began. 3 INVOCATION Pastor: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Worshippers are invited to kneel for the Confession and Absolution. Those who desire not to kneel may sit or stand. Pastor: Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Pastor: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. Pastor: Since we are gathered to hear God s Word and call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING ISAIAH 43:1-7 But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. 3

EPISTLE READING ROMANS 6: What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Please stand for the Reading of the Holy Gospel. THE HOLY GOSPEL LUKE 3:15-22 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, John answered them all, saying, I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. Worshippers are invited to stand and share the peace of the Lord with each other. Children can come down to the chancel steps for the children s message. CHILDREN HILDREN S MESSAGE Children going to Sunday School will be met at the back of the church in the center aisle. Prayer and member/guest cards will be collected during the following song: 4

CONGREGATIONAL SONG Chorus: Scan Scandal of Grace Grace what have You done? Murdered for me on that cross. Accused in absence of wrong, My sin washed away in Your blood. Too much to make sense of it all, I know that Your love breaks my fall. The scandal of grace, You died in my place So my soul will live. Oh, to be like You, Give all I have just to know You, Jesus, there s no-one one beside You, Forever the hope in my heart. Death where is your sting? Your pow r is as dead as my sin. The cross has taught me to live And mercy, my heart now to sing. The day and its troubles shall come, I know that Your strength is enough. The scandal of grace, You died in my place So my soul will live. Chorus Twice And it s all because of You, Jesus. It s all because of You, Jesus. It s all because of Your love That my soul will live. Chorus Twice By Matt Crocker & Joel Houston 2012 Hillsong Music Publishing (Admin by Capitol CMG Publishing) All rights reserved. Used by permission. CCLI Song # CCLI License # THE SERMON REV EV. GLENN FLUEGGE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. GATHERING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS God doesn t need our money, but in His grace He gives us the privilege to be stewards of everything He has entrusted to our care. We can do more together than separately. As one body in Christ, our congregation has agreed to offer our first fruits to support ministries and missions that enable us to communicate Christ s love to everyone, everywhere; and our love for Him. Your sacrificial gift enables this holy work. 5

CONGREGATIONAL MUSICAL OFFERING Hark the Voice of Jesus Calling Hark, the voice of Jesus calling, Who will go and work today? Fields are white and harvests waiting, Who will bear the sheaves away? Loud and long the master calls you; Rich reward he offers free. Who will answer, gladly saying, Here am I. Send me, send me? Men: If you cannot speak like angels, If you cannot preach like Paul. You can tell the love of Jesus; You can say he died for all. If you cannot rouse the wicked With the judgment s dread alarms. You can lead the little children To the Savior s waiting arms. If you cannot be a watchman, Standing high on Zion s wall, Pointing out the path to heaven, Off ring life and peace to all, With your prayers and with your bounties You can do what God demands; You can be like faithful Aaron, Holding up the prophet s hands. Women: Let none hear you idly saying, There is nothing I can do, While the multitudes are dying And the master calls for you. Take the task He gives you gladly; Let His work your pleasure be. Answer quickly when He calls you, Here am I. Send me, send me! THE PRAYERS Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. After each petition the prayer concludes: Pastor: Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ, our Lord. We pray together, Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory for ever and ever. Amen. HOLY COMMUNION REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION As Lutheran communicants, we believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in this holy supper. Be mindful of the words of St. Paul: Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. (1 Corinthians 11:28) Are you truly sorry for your sins? Do you believe your sins are forgiven because Jesus died for them? Do you believe that Jesus gives you His own body and blood in the sacrament as a seal of that forgiveness? Do you have the sincere intent to do better in living the Christian life? Then come, and receive assurance and strength from Jesus. 6

NOTE: In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with grape juice wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or who, for personal reasons, wish to abstain from wine. Also we have gluten-free communion wafers available for those who need them. They are in the small plastic containers on the wafer trays (patens). The empty plastic containers may be placed in the bags with the used communion cups. WORDS OF INSTITUTION Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. THE PEACE Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you. People: And also with you. DISTRIBUTION SONGS The Table I will feast at the table of the Lord. I will feast at the table of the Lord. I won t hunger anymore at His table. Repeat Chorus: Come all you weary, come and find His yoke is easy, His burden light. He is able; He will restore At the table of the Lord. There is peace at the table of the Lord. There is peace at the table of the Lord. I won t worry anymore at His table. There is healing at the table of the Lord. There is healing at the table of the Lord. Oh, and I won t suffer anymore at His table. Chorus I know He has a place for me. Oh, what joy will fill my heart With the saints around the mercy seat of God. Chorus At the table of the Lord. I m invited to the table of the Lord. I m invited to the table of the Lord. He says come just as you are to His table. Words & Music by Chris Tomlin, Ed Cash & Wayne Jolley 2014 S.D.G. 8 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Come, thou Fount of ev ry blessing, Tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. While the hope of endless glory Fills my heart with joy and love, Teach me ever to adore thee; May I still thy goodness prove. Here I raise my Ebenezer, Hither by thy help I m come; And I hope, by thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wand ring from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed his precious blood. Oh, to grace how great a debtor Daily I m constrained to be; Let that grace now like a fetter Bind my wand ring heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it; Prone to leave the God I love. Here s my heart, oh, take and seal it; Seal it for thy courts above. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Pastor: Let us pray. O God our Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in loving-kindness sent Your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank You that for His sake You have given us pardon and peace in this sacrament, and we ask You not to forsake Your children but always to rule our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled to serve You constantly; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen! CLOSING CONGREGATIONAL SONG Joy Of The Lord Though the tears may fall, my song will rise, My song will rise to You. Though my heart may fail, my song will rise, My song will rise to You. While there s breath in my lungs I will praise You, Lord. In the dead of night, I ll lift my eyes, I ll lift my eyes to You. When the waters rise, I ll lift my eyes, I ll lift my eyes to You. While there s hope in this heart I will praise You, Lord. 8

Chorus: The joy of the Lord is my strength! The joy of the Lord is my strength! In the darkness I ll dance, In the shadows I ll sing, The joy of the Lord is my strength! Jesus, I am coming, Walking on the waves, reaching for Your light!
