Bruce Bardon Back to School If you ve been to the mall lately you ve, no doubt, seen all the back to school items. I walk regularly at the Kingston Collection (yup, I m one of those crazy mall walkers!) and noticed them taking down all the summer stuff in mid-july. Pool noodles, coolers, and beach umbrellas were being replaced with notebook, back packs, and pencils. Shorts, bathing suits, and sunglasses were put away in favors of jeans, sweatshirts, and long sleeves. It s that time of year; it s back to school time. Remember that pit in the stomach feeling right after Labor Day; that mixture of nervousness and excitement? Remember all the questions that kept you awake the night before school started? Will my teacher(s) be nice? Will my friends be in my class? How will I do this year? For many, getting to graduation couldn t come soon enough. No more papers, no more books, no more teacher s dirty looks! But no matter when you left high school, or college, or trade school, you quickly realized there s plenty more to learn. Professionals need to take continuing education units (CEU s), people in the trades go to seminars to keep up with best practices. Folks take night classes or online courses to learn new skills. We are life-long learners. The same is true in our Christian life. Some of us went to Sunday school as kids and learned many of the Bible stories, some of us didn t. Some of us have studies the Bible as adults, many of us haven t. Biblical illiteracy is the norm, even among Christians. Bob Smietana in an article entitled American are fond of the Bible, but don t actually read it (Lifeway Research, April 25, 2017) states, Americans have a positive view of the Bible. And many say the Christian scriptures are filled with moral lessons for today. However, more than half of Americans have read little or none of the Bible. He goes on to say, Most Americans don t know first-hand the overall story of the Bible because they rarely pick it up. Sadly, this isn t just true about non-church goers. Our church constitution (article III, 3 rd paragraph) states the Bible is our source of truth in matters of faith and living. If that s true, then it s probably a good idea that each of us pay closer attention to the scriptures. II Timothy 2:15 says Do your best to present yourself to God as ne approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (NIV, emphasis added). The choir in a church I once served used to sing a song You can t stand on the promises if you don t know what they are. Good point! So back to my Back to School Theme. I m hoping to offer an introduction to the Bible class this fall. It is designed as both an entry level study for those new to reading the Bible and a review of the basic themes of the scriptures for long time readers. In other words, it s for everyone! Let me know if you re interested. Remember those questions I mentioned earlier about back to school anxiety? Let me try to answer them for you. Will my teacher be nice? Absolutely! Will my friends be in my class? Hopefully, why not invite them just to be sure. How will I do this year? Great! I guarantee it! See you in school. Blessings, Bruce

2 P A G E 2 Ladies, if you want to spend a morning having a good time and joyful fellowship, then join us each Tuesday at (Year-round)! August 2018 Summer is drifting away on a hot stretch. School has started, Labor Day is here. Our month of August started with breakfast out at Good Days in Bridgewater. I had the 2 of everything special. Our business meeting and birthday lunch was next. Our service project was our Kentucky class. We sent box tops and a gift card before school started and Amanda, the teacher, sent pictures of the kids and what she had bought for the classroom. Our next meeting was a trip to the Pairpoint Glass Factory in Sagamore. We have been before but this time we had a tour and talk by one of the new owners. The Cape Cod Canal train makes a stop at the factory which is a new thing. New renovations to the store front showcasing an array of their glass designs. And a resume of the glass blowers and workers. Their products can be found in museums and hotels around the United States. And we finally made it to the beach. It was a HOT day but there was still a breeze at the shore. Next month's activities as of now include another day at the beach, lunch at one of the vo - tech schools and our service project is collecting goods for care packages for active service men and women. Please join us. Our functions and purposes are service and outreach, self-development (sharing & learning) and fellowship (overcoming aloneness). We invite all ladies of the church and their friends to join us anytime. September Planned Activities: Sept. 4th - Off - Happy Labor Day. Sept. 11th - - Beach Day.
