3 Our Stewardship A Missions Note For the past two years Josie (10 years old) has participated in the Orkambi drug study. Immediately before this years' Great Strides Walk that study will come to an end. I wish I had the stats to share with you since starting the drug. How much has she gained and grown, but I don't, so I'll measure it like this for you: Josie loves sports and her friends and has an adventurous spirit. Jo signs up for just about everything that comes her way: basketball, volleyball, archery, swimming, Odyssey of the Mind & piano lessons. Being in all of those activities takes time and we used to have to plan for treatments but now I don't worry about it. Having CF used to cause a daily pause to doing what she loves. That's not the case now. Orkambi has changed that. I can't tell you the last time I was concerned about her having a cough. She doesn't get worn down like she used to. Mind you it's not a miracle cure. She still has reminders that CF lingers when she pushes herself too hard and she continues to voice discontent to having to take so many pills. She'll have stomach pain that will drop her to her knees, and we have friends in the CF community that have been taking the same drug and have still landed in the hospital for 2+ weeks for a tune-up. Orkambi is good - but it could be better. I could also share the number of days I've taken off to drive her to CT scans, MRIs & study visits...or share the number of blood draws and breathing tests she's done...or all of the activities she has had to miss being a part of this study...but I'd rather you remember that this study afforded Jo opportunity. It's given her an opportunity to thrive and she certainly isn't wasting it. The Dells walk is Saturday, May 5th at the Original Wisconsin Ducks. Please consider walking with us and making a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Josie's honor. Thank You for Your Participation in Missions This month, the 3rd Sunday mission offerings will be taken on May 20th. The Dells/Delton congregation is collecting for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation s research this month. The Davis Corners congregation is collecting for the St. Vincent de Paul Free Clinic. Please support these worthwhile ministries with your additional offering as we work together to bless and care for the communities around us. Please continue to bring items for the Holy Cross and Dells/Delton United Methodist combined pantry donations. This month we are collecting dish soap for the panty. Please be aware that the pantry is also looking for volunteers to help them in their current need. Be sure to check out the Dells/Delton and Davis Corners Facebook pages! facebook.com/umcdells or facebook.com/daviscornersumc
4 Denomination News Celebrate 50 Years of the UMC The United Methodist Church was officially formed on April 23, 1968 with the unification of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church, along with the dissolution of the Central Jurisdiction, a segregated group of African American congregations. As we celebrate this anniversary throughout 2018, especially around Heritage Sunday on May 20, visit UMC.org/umc50 for the latest news, features, and historical retrospectives on this most important anniversary for our church. Also, be sure to follow and tag the United Methodist Church on social media with #UMC50. Church Hospitality Workshop United Methodist Church of the Pines will be hosting a church Hospitality workshop on Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Reverend Dr. James (Jim) P. Ozier, author of the book entitled Clip In: Risking Hospitality in Your Church will lead the workshop. Dr. Jim Ozier is the Director of New Church Development and Congregation Transformation for the North Texas Church Conference. He is a workshop leader, coach, and consultant working with hundreds of pastors and churches in over 20 annual conferences throughout the country. He is an established motivational speaker and presenter for religious groups, civic organizations, and corporations. Based on techniques and ideas learned from his experiences with Southwest Airlines, he has conducted numerous seminars on culture and hospitality for hundreds of pastors, churches, districts, and annual conferences.. Security and Emergency Preparedness Workshop The Conference Board of Trustees and Church Mutual Insurance Company are glad to provide a workshop on the topic of Security and Emergency Preparedness. This workshop will bring awareness to potential security threats and incorporate A.L.I.C.E (Alert, Lockdown, Informer, Counter, Evacuate) and Firestorm principles in response to acts of violence. See our church website to register for this workshop, which will be held Monday, June 18, the Learning Day for Annual Conference. See for readily available information on armed intruders including how to spot warnings, handling an intruder and communicating during a crisis. "Let us never put confidence in man, or in any sanctity of position, office, or dress. If apostleship did not make Judas a saint, neither will position, office, nor dress make thee a saint." 6 Congregational News Dells-Delton Outreach We were very disappointed that Walmart didn't honor our reservation for May 19 for our cookout! Our date now is August 11, which might be a better time for us. Kathy suggested we put an easel by the grocery side with an arrow pointing to our cook out because some people don't look around. We are making plans to put ad in paper about the free pancake supper when it gets closer to fall. Any other suggestion to attract new members please let us know! outreach committee Alter Flowers for Dells-Delton Holy Cross has invited us to help supply flowers for the altar on Sundays. If you would like to honor a loved one, acknowledge a birthday, anniversary, special occasion, or for no particular reason at all, there is a sign up sheet on the wall above the desk in the lounge. There are also instruction sheets on how to go about doing this. Evening Bible Study at Dells-Delton We are continuing the teaching and discussions we began during Lent once a month at Dells-Delton. These studies are open to anyone who would like to attend and learn a bit more about the early church. Be sure to join us for these continuing studies and bring something if you wish. We will not be having a dinner, only a snack or desert when someone feels led to bring one. We will meet again on May 23rd at 6:30pm to look at the church at Pergamum. Dells-Delton UMW News The UMW are coordinating the collection of health kits that will stay in Wisconsin for men, women and children. We are gathering the supplies and donations for these kits to bring them to Annual Conference this June. We will be asking for donations because we are going to make ten of each for our mission project. Remember the annual Salad Luncheon will be held on May 3rd. Someone from the UMW will contact you and ask what you would like to donate for the salad luncheon. Our next meeting will be held on May 2nd at 12:30pm.

8 NOTE FROM THE PASTOR We raise chickens most years and this year has been no exception. The weather unfortunately has been quite the exception. Most of our snow seemed to come I April this year; and it has been downright cold. So, of course, we had our chicks delivered early this year. I always joke about the groundhog being wrong and that we should simply reverse most of his predictions, however when we sign up of the early delivery of chickens, you are almost assured of a very late and cold Spring. An that is exactly what we got this year. As I ve been struggling to keep the chicks warm until they grow out their feathers, I was thinking about all of the comfort and protection a mother hen provides. I also was reading the Gospels before Easter, and came to the end of Matthew 23. Jesus laments over Jerusalem and their continual rejection of the prophets and finally even Him. He says they will not see Him until He comes in victory - their house will be desolate! Sometimes I think that we forget this about God, or we try to push it aside. Maybe we don t like to think of God in terms of a chicken. Most of our translations of Genesis 1 have the Spirit hovering or moving over the waters. But the word used there is much more intense. The way the Hebrew word is used could better be translated as brooded. There is an intense purpose to that hovering or moving that we don t see in our English. God is always brooding. I also find it interesting that Jesus refers to His own mothering in terms of a chicken. We think about grand verses of mounting up on wings of eagles, but forget that protection and comfort offered by a mother hen to her chicks. We really are those little chicks, like it or not. We need shelter: from the world, from our adversary and from the distractions in our own hearts. Shortly we will celebrate our mothers, all those that provide the nurturing and support to children, their own and others, as only a mother can. It is a good time for us also to reflect on the nurturing and support we receive from our Lord. Unlike the chicken, He never kicks us out on our own. He is always there, trying to get us to gather under His wing for the warmth and shelter we need when difficulty comes. Reminding us that we are never alone or far from His protection if we are willing to turn to Him. Celebrate that heart He has placed in our mothers. Encourage them in all they do, and remember the God who broods over His creation and gathers His children. Peace and Blessings! Pastor Lee We would like to wish a very Happy Birthday to everyone who has a birthday this month. We hope we have all of the birthdays on the calendar. Please let us know if we ve missed anyone. **Additions, Corrections or Submissions to the newsletter can be sent to: news@wisconsindellsumc.org
