2 A full month has passed since I assumed the ministry of serving as your pastor. Since October 1st, I have met many of you and I am looking forward to meeting many more. Inspired by the words of Pope Francis about the importance of encounters with the intention for authentic dialogue, I have met regularly with members of our parish staff as well as with members of our parish committees. Some of the strong impressions that I have gleaned have been the amazing energies and dedicated acumen of so many of you. I have been especially blessed to witness how so many of you serve generously on the plethora of parish committees. What a delight it has been to attend meetings with parishioners serving on the Parish Council, the Finance Council, the Development Committee, the Communications Committee, the Holy Trinity School Advisory Board, the Holy Trinity Home and School Association, and the Parish Life Committee. In addition I have met those of you involved with the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), the Young Adult Community (YAC), the Separated, Divorced and Widowed Group and the Confirmation Peer Ministry Team. And there are more committees to be met. The budget numbers for FY 2015 reveal an account of accomplishments as well as some challenges. The overall Capital Campaign for the renovation projects on Trinity Hall, the Lower and Upper School and the Church s structures reached $10,622,989. There remains, however, the challenge of raising an additional 2 million dollars for improvements to the Church edifice as well as commitments we ve made to Ignatian Spirituality and Social Justice programs. While we are planning to go ahead with long overdue repairs on the Church s windows, our budget will not allow us to do planned renovations on other features in the building. The painting of the interior, renovations of the pews and the floor and other mechanical improvements will be delayed, probably until the summer of The number of pledges and the overall income numbers for FY 2015 also reveal a challenging shortfall. In FY 2015 the parish s collections was $3.7 million. In the previous year collections were $3.9 million. This difference combined with all other operating categories resulted in an overall reduction in revenue from FY 2014 of $ k, which is almost 10%. Fortunately, we were still able to break even by proactively managing our limited resources and postponing certain physical plant and capital expenditures. On a more positive note our parish school increased their enrollments and bettered their overall financial results from the prior year. I like to think this is at least partially due to increased attention to the school from the capital campaign and renovations which have now been completed. I wish to thank parishioners who have pledged as well as those who did not make a formal pledge but choose to make their contribution at year end. -Fr. 3 Annual Report 2015 Financial Highlights for the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 2015 (FY 2015) In the interest of transparency and accountability, we make this financial summary available to parishioners. Financial information in this summary is unaudited at this time. When the audit is complete, parishioners will be able to review it, as well as audits of previous years finances, during normal business hours. Parishioners may direct questions regarding this or other parish financial information to Chris Kehoe, Director of Finance, at (202) , or Parish operating revenue in FY2015, including gifts made through the parish pledge campaign and other unrestricted revenue, totaled approximately $4,175,923. Financial contributions through the annual parish pledge program provide the bulk of parish revenues. We expect to raise $3 million through the pledge program during calendar year The majority of households registered in the parish make financial gifts through the parish pledge program. Ordinary parish expenditures, including expenditures for liturgy and worship, support of the parish clergy, religious education and faith formation, social justice programs, Ignatian prayer and spirituality, ordinary repairs and maintenance, and parish administration, totaled $3,519,461. Other expenditures, including expenditures related to the capital campaign, major repairs and a planned contribution to the parish reserve fund for major capital improvements, were $656,462. Holy Trinity Parish - FY 2015 Actual - Revenues ($000) Holy Trinity Parish - FY 2015 Actual - Expenditures ($000) $140 $217 $401 $201 $3,178 $300 $601 $353 $747 $57 $172 $530 $62 $105 $114 $523 $651 Pledge and Offertory - 76% Holiday Collec?ons - 14% Contribu?ons & Dona?ons - 1% Religious Educa?on - 4% All Other Revenue - 1% Weddings/Sacraments - 3% Liturgy & Music - 10% Parish Clergy - 5% Religious Ed. - 8% Social Concerns - 13% IgnaGon Spirituality - 3% Admin. - 16% Parish Other - 13% Physical Plant - 18% Reserve Fund - 7% Other Funds - 3% Capital Expenditures - 5% 1 Annual Report 2015

4 The difference between these parish revenues and expenditures is available for transfer to the parish reserve, the bulk of which is designated to assist in maintaining the campus physical plant. Parish school revenues were $5,279,134. Operating expenditures were $4,801,054. Other expenditures for planned contributions to the school capital reserve fund, and other restricted funds totaled $478,080. Both Holy Trinity Parish and its school ended the fiscal year with balanced budgets, were debt free and had approximately $2.2M of unrestricted cash on hand. At the start of the fiscal year, major campus building construction began. Before students left for summer break in 2014, work began on the Lower School. By the time they returned in the fall, the Lower School was finished. Throughout the 2015 school year, construction on the Upper School Theater continued and was completed with the rest of the Upper School at the start of the 2016 school year. Significant and necessary improvements were made on these centuryold buildings. This included new entrances to the buildings, elevators, fire suppression and alarms for safety and ADA access. New and larger restrooms were installed in each building. Many classrooms and offices were added or improved and technological enhancements were made throughout. Each school building had major roof, HVAC and other energy saving upgrades. Trinity Hall, previously known as the Upper School Theater, has been completely transformed into a large, bright and spacious place for worship, gym class, performances and the multitude of events already scheduled for that space. Planning and project scope refinement for Church renovations are actively being evaluated and supervised by the Pastor. 5 Ministry Highlights Worship and Music The heart of the Holy Trinity community is our liturgical life during which we gather to offer praise to God and challenge ourselves to bring the Gospel message of love, justice, and peace into the world. Holy Trinity celebrates Eucharist seven times on Sunday and three times daily. Eucharistic celebrations also include monthly Masses for youth, young adults, and Shepherd s Flock (a program that supports children and families with special needs). Reconciliation is celebrated each Saturday, Wednesdays during Lent, and communally during various seasons. The parish celebrates monthly Taize Prayer Services during which the Sacrament of the Sick is offered, and we celebrate Evening Prayer seasonally during which parishioners preside and offer reflections. We also celebrate the baptisms of four to ten children almost every weekend as well as multiple weddings. The parish celebrated over 30 funerals last year. This vibrant worship life is possible because so many parishioners offer their time and talent. Nearly 600 parishioners serve as acolytes, beadles, Extraordinary Ministers of Communion, lectors, cantors, sacristans, ushers, masters of ceremonies, Communion Ministers to the Homebound, and music ministers. The parish offers an annual day of formation and retreat for Liturgical ministers. Ignatian Spirituality and Prayer Parishioners and others in the Washington area continued to benefit from Holy Trinity s diverse retreat offerings, parish-wide outreach and lay formation programs. We offered the full Spiritual Exercises and retreats in daily life, weekend retreats for young adults, days of reflection for Seniors, Sunday mornings of prayer for parents, and evenings of prayer led by women in recovery from homelessness and addictions. Movie Moments of Grace provided parishioners with opportunities to enjoy a film and share their experience with others in small group discussion. The parish lay leaders and staff grew in their understanding of the character of a Jesuit-sponsored parish through their participation in Principium Training those who are called to become spiritual directors or spiritual companions through the Jesuit-Inspired Special Project, began with the Explore and Discern seminar last spring and will continue with the Ignatian Formation Program in the fall of Social Justice Social Justice started the year with a day-long event focused on solidarity, Ignatian spirituality, and immigration featuring Congressman Jim McGovern. Many parishioners participated in our annual Thanksgiving meal drive, Christmas giving trees, and monthly food collections for the Father McKenna Center. Our school children collected books and made welcome packs for unaccompanied minors arriving from Central America, packed breakfasts for guests of Catholic Charities shelters, and served at the Capitol Area Food Bank. Religious education also had an active service year, preparing and serving meals for So Others Might Eat (SOME), making sandwiches for the McKenna Center and adopting families at Christmas from the Spanish Catholic Center. We also ran two advocacy efforts one asking Congress to pass humane immigration reform legislation and the other as part of Bread for the World s offering of letters. The latter we did in partnership with 5 other East Coast Jesuit parishes. Finally, we capped our year of social justice with a parish-wide day of service in June. 3 Annual Report 2015

6 Faith Formation & Religious Education The ministries of Faith Formation and Religious Education continue to serve the needs of parishioners at Holy Trinity. Our growing K thriugh 8 Sunday Morning Faith Formation program serves about 800 children and their families. Of note is our Shepherd s Flock program for children with disabilities and their families. Using a modified Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atrium and supplemented with Loyola Press adaptive program, all are able to grow in their understanding and participation of the sacraments. The ongoing work of sacramental preparation for Baptism, Marriage, First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation assisted many parishioners as they continued to grow in understanding and practice of their faith. We are grateful to the many volunteers who served our various ministries, sharing their faith with both children and adults. Our adult education series last year focused on Becoming Catholic Even If You Already Are. This monthly speaker series offered parishioners an opportunity to reflect on their faith, examine basic facets of our beliefs and to perhaps view their faith in a different way. Development The 2014 Parish Pledge had a successful year with gifts totaling $3,185,255 from 1,635 households, exceeding its $3 million goal. The Capital Campaign for the renovation project on the Church, Lower School, Upper School, and Trinity Hall reached $10,622,989 with gifts and pledges from 636 donors. The Holy Trinity School Annual Fund exceeded its goal with combined efforts totaling $291,277. Unrestricted Gifts: $172,012 / Restricted Gifts: $119,265. Over 80% of the 8th grade parents participated in the 8th grade class gift, with contributions totaling $22,504 to benefit the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) program. The Home & School Association (HSA) held three fun and successful fundraisers throughout the year - The Golf Classic, Book Fair, Trivia Night, and Annual Auction. These events generated over $148,000 to support and enhance the various school programs and provide need-based scholarships to deserving students. Capital Campaign - Through June 30, 2015 $12.5M Goal, $6.2M Received ($000) Parish Life The Parish Life Committee just ended its inaugural year. Although new, the committee significantly contributed to the development of several important projects. The first was a brochure to better promote the many Parish Life activities to the Holy Trinity community as a whole. The second was to coordinate the first Trinity Weekend on June The weekend combined the Power of One service day on Saturday with an annual outdoor mass and picnic on Sunday. Over 600 parishioners attended, and we expect it will continue to be an annual event and a new Holy Trinity tradition. 7 Holy Trinity School Holy Trinity School (HTS) is a dynamic community of students, families and educators who work together as people for others. Under the governance of the Archdiocese of Washington and the direction of the parish pastor, school principal and two assistant principals, HTS aims to serve all students in its Pre- Kindergarten through 8th grade community meeting academic, physical, emotional and spiritual needs, while affirming all student s worth and fostering independence. Within our Jesuit school, this commitment to students is called cura personalis, or care of the person. Influenced by the charism of St. Ignatius, it is the school s foundational principle that everyone in the community find cura along the way. Indeed, Ignatian spirituality is evident throughout the HTS curriculum, beginning each day with the Suscipe prayer, using imagination and reflection across content areas and ending each day by praying the Examen. The school s theme forming young people for others invites students to use their many gifts in service to others. Student Body Highlights Approximately 325 enrolled students in Pre-K through 8th grades 88 percent of students are Catholic 21 percent of students are racially or ethnically diverse Approximately 25 percent of the students receive need-based financial aid, including 10 low-income students with high academic potential who receive a full-tuition Gavigan Scholarship More than $600,000 in need-based financial assistance is provided each year Extracurricular activities include an After School program, CYO sports, musical theater, math and debate teams, as well as studio art classes. Faculty Highlights Average teacher tenure is 7 years 62 percent of teachers hold an advanced degree Holy Trinity also provides an academic program that challenges students to be intellectually rigorous and open to growth. Strong teachers collaborate to implement best practices for 21st century learners. As a result, HTS has a strong track record of sucessfully preparing students for each stage of their lives. 5 Annual Report 2015
