Do we allow our witness to intersect with our social media lives? Mark Dever writes of questions we, who are Christians, should always ask ourselves before we post anything online. Let s just start with the first question. Ask yourself this question first, before you post on Facebook, Tweet something out or even send an Will it help others or significantly inform a useful conversation? Read Mark 12:29 31 and 1 Corinthians 14:26. Try to think of what will improve others. All we do is in obedience to the command to love God and others. How will it increase their knowledge, or faith, or love? Are you accurately representing any positions you disagree with? How sure am I of my facts? Trivialities hopefully fill up our lives less than they do so much of the Internet. John Piper has said that One of the great uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove on the last day that our prayerlessness was not from lack of time! He s right. Information Sessions about Upcoming Called General Conference Recently, it has become apparent that there may be any number of persons in our congregation who are unaware that our denomination will have a Called General Conference in February of 2019 to deal with a topic that has been discussed and debated at every General Conference for many years. That topic is the United Methodist Church s stand on human sexuality. The decisions that will be made at the General Conference in 2019 will affect every United Methodist congregation. Therefore, our Church Council has authorized two information sessions to explain to our Christ Church congregation, in greater detail, how this matter will be discussed at the February 2019 Conference. These sessions will not be a time for debate but rather a time of simply sharing information about how our church system works and the petitions that will be discussed at the General Conference. On Sunday, September 16, we are asking that all adult Sunday School Classes meet in the sanctuary during the Sunday School hour for this presentation. Then on Sunday evening, September 23, at 4:30, we will offer the same session in the sanctuary for those who may have missed the first presentation. I encourage all of you to attend one of these presentations. 2 Page 2 Children s Ministries KIDS RULE (Read, Understand, Learn, Explore God s Word) has just begun our new season. This mid-week Bible study is for students who are currently 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th graders. We focus on becoming comfortable reading and using our Bibles, giving students the information and tools required to begin effectively studying the Word of God. Our group meets each Wednesday at 6:00pm and we dismiss promptly at 7:00pm. KIDS CLUB: During WD 2, several of our parents rotate and lead the children in Kids Club, an activity time for children 3 years of age through 2 nd grade. The children have a short lesson, watch a Christian video and complete a simple craft or coloring page. Parents must be on site and participating in one of our Wednesday evening adult programs. ROCK (Reaching Out to Christ s Kids) is our Sunday program for children ages 3 years through 2 nd grade. We meet each week during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. A typical Sunday includes singing, a Bible story, a puppet skit, snack and a craft. Christ Church s Nursery provides a safe and loving place to grow. The nursery is available during both worship services on Sunday morning and during the Sunday School hour for the benefit of children under the age of 3. On Wednesday evenings, the nursery is open for the children of parents who are participating in WD 2 classes. If you have questions, please see Patty Wintuska, April Taylor or Angie Gordon. Mark your calendars: Return to VBS has been scheduled and will be held on Tuesday, December 20 th and Wednesday, December 21 st. We will revisit Shipwrecked and enjoy, once again, some of our favorite music, songs and crafts from this past summer s VBS. The program will run for 2 days from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon. SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS: Our Children s Sunday School Classes are in need of two or three people who would be willing to fill in as substitute teachers on those occasions when the regular teacher is unable to attend. If you can help in this way, please see Becky Harrell. Additional Sunday School Superintendents are needed. Ideally, we would like to have 3 adults share responsibility for the overall coordination of this weekly program. Superintendents take attendance, collect offerings and recruit and support our teaching staff. Becky Harrell would be happy to speak with you if you would like more information.

3 Page 3 Youth Church Family, I am so excited to be writing to you as the new youth pastor at CUMC. Our family has attended Christ Church and I have been the assistant youth pastor for the past 6 years. I am looking forward to serving the youth in a new role. I was raised in Bowling Green and attended WKU for my Bachelor s Degree. During that time, I met and married Gerod and we moved to Hopkinsville where I served as youth pastor at St. John UMC for 7 years. During that time, I received my Master s Degree in Counseling and Human Development. In 2012, our family moved back to Bowling Green where we began attending CUMC. We have been blessed with two amazing sons, Isaak and Elijah. Most of our time outside of church is spent enjoying outdoor activities or running our kids back and forth to various sports practices. My mom also lives with us and is an active part of our lives. Kelli has been a huge help, and although I have only been around them a very short time so far, they seem like a great group and I can t wait to start working with them. I think most of you know me, but for those that don t I was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Kentucky when I was 10. Being the son of a Methodist preacher we have moved around a lot, but settled in Bowling Green back in I ve been married since June of 2012 to my wonderful wife Talitha and we have the most amazing (almost) 2 year old daughter Remi who loves to dance and sing and is always smiling. I play guitar and sometimes sing in the worship band for the contemporary service on Sunday mornings. My full-time job is working as a Trainer at the United Methodist Publishing House in Nashville, and I have been there since August of When I m not working, at the church, or spending time with my family I enjoy playing basketball and watching Ohio State football! I am very laid back and open so if you ever want to know more about me or just want to chat just let me know! -Zach Richards

Christ Church will be a shoebox drop off location again this year. Please consider packing a shoebox or shoeboxes. Any kind of shoebox, cardboard or plastic is fine. We have plenty of Operation Christmas Child go-boxes (preprinted cardboard shoeboxes). Volunteers are needed that week to receive shoebox drop-offs, pack them into cartons, and load them for shipping. 5 Page 5 From Melissa Our annual Cave Mill Cookout was such an amazing day. Thank you to the dozens of volunteers who spent countless hours working ahead of and on the day itself. We registered 235 volunteers, gave away 20 door prizes, including 3 bikes, and served at least 525 bowls of ice cream, around 500 delicious burgers, 200 hot dogs, and 2 enormous bags of popcorn. It was a hot day but many took advantage of spending time in the FLC visiting with friends while enjoying their meal. We saw some familiar faces: children who had attended VBS, people from the Mizo church, and families who attended our Brandermill Breakaway over the summer. It was exciting for me this year to have several people reach out to me to ask how much the event cost and to be able to share with them that the entire event was free and a way to share joy and the love of God with our neighborhood. It is my prayer that people experienced a welcoming and friendly church, that they experienced the love of God in a tangible way, and that they will consider joining us or another church in worship. Will you join me in praying for our guests? Maybe that a Scripture they read on the wall would stick with them, or that the prize they won would be a celebration of God s goodness, or that a conversation or smile from a church person would draw them back to church. Or maybe even that they would drive by our church, remember the generosity of our Savior, and give their lives to him.

In addition to the produce market and general store, we will visit a sorghum mill, where, if the weather cooperates, they will be cooking corghum.
