What You Need: Picture Cards, Pencils and Shepherding Guide SAY Let s share some encouraging words that we said to someone else this week. (allow children to share) ASK a follow up question to each child Who did you say that to? What did the person say in response? SAY Thank you for sharing! You said some very encouraging things this week! You are each good encouragers! Now it s time to go to large group and learn about Pentecost and Jesus followers who spread the good news. 2 ACTIVITY 1 A Picture of Pentecost What You Need: Pentecost Print Materials, Glue sticks, construction paper Teacher Note: The children will create a Pentecost picture! During the activity, each prop will be added to the construction paper to create a picture to remember what happened during Pentecost. SAY As we answer questions, we will add pictures to our page. Then, we will read the Pentecost story from the book of Acts. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS 1. How many days after Passover is Pentecost? Answer: 50 Days Picture Instruction: Glue Table to the construction paper. 2. When all of Jesus followers were together, they heard a loud noise. What did this loud noise sound like? Answer: A huge wind Picture Instruction: Glue Blowing Wind to your construction paper. 3. The word Pentateuch means five books; what does the word Pentecost mean? Answer: Fiftieth Picture Instruction: Glue Tongues of Fire to your construction paper. 4. What super power did Jesus followers get when the Holy Spirit came down? Answer: They could all speak in different languages Picture Instruction: Glue Different Languages to your construction paper. SAY All of the people in our picture are saying the same word but in a different language. They are saying Holy Spirit. Some are even in languages that we might not be able to read, like Arabic, Hebrew and Korean. Who in our group speaks a different language? Let s practice saying the ones we can read. SAY Let s read Acts 2:1-4 from our Bibles. When we get to the part of the story where it says everyone was speaking in different tongues/languages, I want you to choose one of the languages to say the word Holy Spirit. And we will all say it at the same time in different languages. SAY Wonderful! That s what it might have sounded like when Jesus followers were together. Next, we ll hear what Jesus followers did with the Holy Spirit s power.

3 ACTIVITY 2 Bible Review Younger (K-2) Teacher Note: This is a relay game that will occur in the open area of K-2. The masking tape will mark a start line (Jerusalem). Place the rolled newspapers in a pile by the start line. Then, have the kids race to and from the three additional tape lines (Judea, Samaria, Ends of the Earth). What You Need: Bibles, 2 paper batons (Rolled individually and rubber-banded) and Masking Tape SAY Let s play the New Testament Relay Game! First, I ll divide you into two teams. Jesus told his followers to take the good news to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria & to the ends of the earth. Each team will start on the first line (Jerusalem). As we answer questions, you get a chance to spread the good news to Judea, then Samaria and then to the last line the ends of the earth. Here is how the game works: when the first question is answered correctly, the first person in line will run to the first line (Judea) and back passing the paper baton to the next person. Each person will have a turn to run back and forth. As each person is running, the rest of the group can shout To Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth! 1. QUESTION: After Pentecost, Jesus followers fearlessly spread the good news throughout Jerusalem and Judea. And God performed miracles through them, just like Jesus had done! One day Peter and John went into the temple and met a man who couldn t walk. What did Peter and John do? ANSWER: Peter said, In the name of Jesus, get up and walk! And he did! God healed the man through Peter! SAY Wonderful! Now let s spread the good news to Judea! We are going to run our relay from the first line/jerusalem to the second line/judea. Let s practice our chant To Judea, Samaria, & to the ends of the earth! 2. QUESTION: The Sadducees became frustrated that the apostles were spreading the good news at the temple almost every day, so they had them all arrested and thrown in jail! That night they were let out of jail. Who let them out and told them to go right back to preaching in the temple? ANSWER: An Angel SAY Now let s spread the good news to Samaria! We are going to run our relay from the second line/ Judea to the third line/samaria. Let s say our chant To Judea, Samaria, & to the ends of the earth! 3. QUESTION: The apostles were spreading the good news to the Gentiles. Who are the Gentiles? ANSWER: If you were Jewish, you saw the world as two groups - Jews, and everybody else. And they called the everybody else Gentiles.

4 4. QUESTION: Pentecost was how many days after the Passover? Answer: QUESTION: When God sent the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the room was filled with a loud noise. What did the loud noise sound like? Answer: A huge wind 6. QUESTION: True or False: The Holy Spirit is not for showing off. It is for helping God s plan move forward and bringing the Kingdom of God to life! Answer: True 7. QUESTION: Jesus told His followers to spread the good news. If this is from God, there is nothing we can do to stop it. Answer: Gamaliel 9. QUESTION: Who were the Gentiles? Answer: Everyone who was not Jewish

QUESTION: After Pentecost, Peter and John went to the temple where they saw a man who couldn t walk. What did they do? Answer: They said, In the name of Jesus, get up and walk! 12. QUESTION: True or False: The Holy Spirit is for everyone who follows Jesus. This is a part of God s rescue plan. Answer: True 12. 6 ACTIVITY 3 Memory Verse Activity Bean Bag Toss What You Need: Bean Bag SAY Now it s time to practice our memory verse for the week. Memory Verse: Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. DO Have the kids toss the bean bag to one another with each child saying one word of the memory verse before tossing the bean bag to the next person. Try saying the verse a few different times. Encourage the kids to go faster each time as they learn the verse. Pray and Dismiss SAY Jesus planted the seed for the Kingdom of God. His miracles and His love were sprouts of that kingdom. But it s the Holy Spirit that makes the Kingdom of God explode into life through everyone who follows Jesus! SAY You see, the same Holy Spirit that filled Peter and the apostles will fill us if we re following Jesus! SAY The power we get from the Holy Spirit isn t for showing off. It s always for helping God s plan move forward! Bringing the Kingdom of God to life! SAY Now it s your turn. How will you build God s kingdom this week? How will you help move God s plan forward? And, how will you spread God s good news of love? Let s take a quiet moment to close our eyes, and listen to God. Ask God, What kinds of things does the Holy Spirit want to help me do? ENCOURAGE the children to share their ideas with the group. PRAY Let s pray together. What would you like to say to Jesus today? PRAY Talk to the kids about what they d like to say to Jesus and give them an opportunity to pray. Pray for God to give the kids power to bless others this week. (A Jewish holiday celebrated 50 days after Passover) During Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came down to Jesus followers. What happened?
