A printed version will be provided for you in your catechist mailbox. Prior to class, read the story on Page 2 and the supporting discussion on page TG1-10 in your teaching guide. Depending on your class dynamic it may be difficult to have the children sit while this story is read. In lieu of reading the story, we have provided a more active game to introduce a discussion on welcoming people. It is important to read the Gospel Reflection found towards the end of this plan. There is an engaging visual for the children to understand the Gospel this week, and it helps to have knowledge of it prior to doing it. We will have the materials on hand for you. Prior to class, place a Good News Student Pamphlet on each desk so they may begin the gathering activity as they enter. Part of our session today introduces the children to using the Bible. Here is a link to a GREAT summary of the Bible. Yes it is a bit lengthy but grab your favorite beverage and take time to read it!
2 Suggested Timeline for September 30, :00am to 9:10am 10:45am 10:55am Welcome & Gathering Activity Cover Page If a child is new, please have them make a namecard. For those who were here the first day, place the namecards on the desks prior to class. As the children wait for all to gather, have the children work on the two worksheets Hear Their Stories and God Speaks to Us Go around the room and have everyone reintroduce themselves and remind them of the class rules. Pass out the student pamphlets and facilitate the How Are We Connected cover page discussion. 9:10am-9:35am 11:10am 11:35am Prayer Table - Discover Gospel and Doctrine Gospel Reflection Who Belongs to Jesus Group? Review the Gospel reading and reflection object lesson outline below (a copy will be in your folder) Have the children work together to set up the prayer table. Briefly review as items are placed on the table, what they symbolize. Open your morning with prayer: Dear God, thank you for our parish community. Our families gather to praise you and learn about Jesus. Please bless our class today. AMEN After prayer, place the jar with the baking soda solution, the spaghetti pieces, and the small container of vinegar on the table. Follow the steps in the object lesson below While you are working with the children, have the co-catechist or teen placed a Bible on each child s desk Remind the children that the Gospels are found in the Bible the inspired Word of God, and that we are going to take a closer look at the Bible. Continue with the We Read From the Bible at Mass Activity. o NOTE: This is a great time to have the children review how to look up readings in the Bible, so please take some time to do this. Open the Bible to page 13 to go over how to find Bible passages. o Help the children find the Gospel Story- Mark 9: Next have them find this Sunday s 1 st reading- Numbers 11: o Please have a catechist or teen aide read the Bible passages so that they can be clearly heard. o How is the story of Eldad and Medad like the Gospel story? What do the two stories show about belonging? o Finish by completing the activity on page 3 of the Student pamphlet.
3 9:35am - 9:50am 11:10am 11:35am Same as Me/ Would You Rather Game ALL THIRD GRADE TOGETHER IN THE GYM All third grade classes head to the gym for a combine Same as Me / Would You Rather game. Game questions can be found on the following pages. o Choose one catechist to be the announcer. o Chose catechists/teens to take signs and head to the corners of the gym. o The children will stand in the center gathered around the announcer. o The announcer will read the statement of questions and the kids will move to the appropriate corner. o The announcer can provide simple comments about the sizes of groups, why they would do / not do certain things. o Consider making the movement part of the fun (For example: Question 1 Walk like a penguin; Question 2 hop like a frog, etc.) Guide the class in a discussion about being new, how we can make a connection to those who are new or shy. 9:50am 10:05am 11:35am 11:50am What the Church Believes and Teaches The Liturgy of the Word In lieu of reading these pages from the book, we will be playing a game to explore the Liturgy of the Word. Each class will have a set of Liturgy of the Word Matching Game cards and instructions. A sample of the cards and the instructions can be found on the following pages. 10:05am 10:15am 11:55am 12:00pm Closing Activity If Time Allows: Turn to the back page and have the children s complete Who Belongs To Jesus Group thinking of people in their live who fill those roles (See TG1-11 for instructions). Close class by gathering again around the prayer table to pray the Sign of the Cross, Glory Be, and the Our Father (every week)

5 Gospel Reading and Reflection Mark 9:38-43,45,47-48 Jesus teaches that whoever is not against him is for him. Making the Connection (Grades 1, 2, and 3) Young children can be jealous of others who appear to be able to do things better than they can. We can teach them that even the smallest contributions to God s Kingdom are valued by God. Materials Needed These will be provided for you 1 tablespoon of baking soda 2 cups of water poured in a clear plastic container 1-inch pieces of spaghetti 3 tablespoons of vinegar Preparation for Sunday Scripture Readings
6 1. Before your session, dissolve one tablespoon of baking soda in a clear container that holds two cups of water. Ask a volunteer to drop one-inch pieces of spaghetti into the container. The pieces will settle to the bottom. 2. Say: These pieces of spaghetti are like all of us, in a way. We might spend a long time not doing anything really great. Stir in three tablespoons of vinegar; the pieces of spaghetti will rise and sink repeatedly. When we get to know God, however, we can start doing lots of things. Some of us may do bigger things than others, but we re all equal in God s eyes because we re all working for God. In the Gospel this week, the disciples needed to learn this. 3. Using the Student Pamphlet, assign children to assist in reading the skit form of the Gospel. 4. Ask: Why did Jesus disciples want to stop the person who was healing in Jesus name? (because this person was not a follower of Jesus) What answer did Jesus give to his disciples? (He told the disciples to let this person continue.) 5. Say: The disciples sounded jealous because they thought that they were the only ones who would be able to heal others using the power of Jesus name. Jesus teaches them that they should not be jealous. Instead they should remember that all who do what God wants are equal in his eyes and are working together to build the Kingdom of God. Whenever we do something good for another person, even the smallest good deed, God is pleased with us. 6. Conclude in prayer together, asking God to keep us from being jealous of the things others can do. Pray together the Lord s Prayer
7 Liturgy of the Word Matching Game Materials: 3 sets of cards o Set 1 Name of the specific part of the liturgy of the word o Set 2 A simple explanation about that part o Set 3 Pictures that reinforce that part of the liturgy o Reference notes and talking points (found after instructions) Instructions: PART ONE Mix up Set 1 cards and give them face down to 7 children. Choose a child to start, they place their card on the chalk rail Choose a second child to continue. This child places his/her card in the proper place in relation to the first card. Continue with the other children, periodically asking the class if they think the order is correct. Once the order is correct, move to Part Two PART TWO Mix up Set 2 cards and give face down to 7 children Choose a child to start. This child is to match the simple explanation on the card to the part of the Liturgy of the Word and attach to the dry erase board above the title. (For example: Place Old Testament above First Reading ) Continue, encouraging the class to help when necessary until all 7 cards are matched correctly PART THREE Mix up Set 3 cards and give face down to 7 children Choose a child to start. This child is to match the pictures to the title and explanation and attaches to the dry erase board above the explanation. Continue, encouraging the class to help when necessary until all 7 cards are matched correctly CLOSING When the cards are all displayed, review form the beginning, this time adding comments as to our body position (sitting, standing, etc), our
8 responses, and our gestures. See the talking points below for a guide. Liturgy of the Word: We Listen to the Word of God First Reading: we listen to the lector proclaim a reading from the Old Testament. We answer, Thanks be to God. We give thanks to God for revealing Himself to us through His Word. We are sitting Psalm Response: we answer God s word to us in the first reading through the words of a psalm from the Old Testament. These are musical poems that are a prayer to God expressing our feelings forgiveness, sadness, joy, thankfulness praise. Consider opening the Children s Bible to page 836 and reading the introduction to the Psalms. We are sitting Second Reading: we listen to a reading from the letters in the New Testament. We answer, Thanks be to God. Gospel: We give thanks to God for revealing Himself to us through His Word. We are sitting we stand as we listen to the presider proclaim the good news about Jesus. We answer, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. We prepare to hear the good news by standing and singing a joyful chant, usually with the word Alleluia. We prepare ourselves by signing a cross on our forehead, lips, and heart. o In the outward sign of crossing our forehead, lips, and heart, we are asking that the Word of God to pierce our mind, lips, and hearts. o We cross our forehead so that the Word of God may be in our thoughts and purify our minds. We cross our lips so that our speech may be holy and incline us to share the Gospel with others. And we cross our hearts to invite God to strengthen our love for Him and others. All of this is so that we might know, proclaim, and love Jesus Christ all the more. We answer Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ because the Gospel contains the words of Jesus. The Homily: the presider comments upon and shares insights about the
9 readings. We listen as the priest or deacon helps us understand the meaning of the readings and how we can live out that meaning in our daily life. We are sitting The Profession of Faith: we define who we are and what we believe as a community. We stand and proclaim what we believe about God the Father, the Son, and the HOky Spirit. Prayers of the Faithful: Card Sets: we pray for the Church, for our world, and for one another. We are standing As a community of faith we respond Lord, hear our prayer.
