1 First Things A Newsletter of the First Reformed Church, Schenectady, New York January, 2015 Heritage Sunday Feb 1 For Heritage Sunday 2015, we will continue to explore the life of our congregation during the years of the Civil War, Our program on February 1, 2015 will focus on the Reverend Denis Wortman, our 14th minister who came to our congregation at the end of the Civil War. Dr. Wortman delivered a powerful sermon after President Lincoln's assassination that helped reunify Schenectady at the close of the Civil War. However, he is best known and remembered for his work as a composer. Heritage Sunday will include selections of his music. In the forum program, James Brumm, the Moderator of the Commission on History of the Reformed Church in America will further enlighten us about the legacy of Denis Wortman. The New Church built during the Civil War The Rev. Dr. Denis Wortman Unity Luncheon January 11 When the merger of UPC and FRC was formally recognized in worship on November 23, we were pleased to have sixty or more people from Union present and participating.. 2 Intergenerational Game Night Feb 28 Mark your calendar and join the Fellowship and Youth Education Committees for a night to enjoy each other's company playing board games, puzzles, and cards from 6pm-8pm following the Link service on Saturday, February 28 th. Plan to bring a favorite game and a drink and/or snack to share; we'll order pizza so you don't need to cook that night. We're looking forward to it! Orff in January! 2015 begins an exciting musical opportunity for all ages! The Orff Ensemble of FRC will begin rehearsals and would like to include you in this magical experience! Regardless of what your musical skills are, we can find a spot where you can enjoy the sounds and worship experiences in a new way. FRC has had a long tradition of Orff instruments and this has been renewed with the arrival of all the UPC instruments, musicians and legacy of Lillian Roe's music. What a lovely way to join hands in making beautiful music that will contribute to the richness of music in our church. Please contact Judy Moore for more information and specifics about rehearsals. moorebells@gmail.com or Daily Devotional Books Group V has their Devotional books available again this year. These make great holiday gifts, hostess gifts, and just thoughtful gifts for friends and family. There are copies available in the book shop. These books can be used over year after year. The quotes come from religious and non-religious sources. If any questions, contact Maria G. Todd, , who will also have books. The cost is $7 each or 3 for $20. Walter Clark s research on the Star of Bethlehem The gospel of Matthew refers to three wise men from the east who followed the star to Jerusalem to worship Christ. According to a computer model that recreated the night sky around that time, Jupiter and Venus were close together, creating a spectacular beacon of light. The light could have been seen during the early part of the morning, just before sunrise. Such configurations could occur many times in our lifetime but rarely as bright as the one that occurred in 2 BC. There are also theories that the star could have been a comet or a supernova. For those of you who have made pledges to UPC in 2014, this is a reminder that we are now part of First Reformed Church, and we are only awaiting approval from the New York State Supreme Court to merge our assets with FRC s. Therefore, we are asking that if you make any pledge payments or contributions to the church after December 31, your checks should be made directly to First Reformed Church. Once the court s approval is given, we will no longer maintain accounts in the name of UPC. We expect this change to take place early in the New Year. We will prepare a 2014 Annual Report for Union Presbyterian Church, reviewing the final steps toward merger, listing membership changes during the year, and displaying detailed financial statements showing the distribution of all money in the accounts of the UPC Foundation, the 2014 Operating Budget, the Benevolence Budget, the Deacon s Fund, and the Women s Association. 6 First Futures Campaign Begins by Organizing Perhaps you've heard or read that the Consistory is considering ways to improve our building to meet the congregation's needs over the next 20+ years! It's true! And we are pleased to lead the planning and fundraising effort for the First Futures Campaign. Why "Futures?" Because we can't honestly know what the future holds, and with a congregation of this size and diversity of talent there will be many ways this building will support our future. Perhaps you'd like to see improvements in our assembly space! Perhaps you'd like to know the organ has been fully repaired. Perhaps you'd like it to be cooler and less sticky in the sanctuary during the summer! Or perhaps you'd like the church to use less energy and be easier for the community (and us) to access. Or perhaps... (you fill in this blank ). To this end we have put together four planning teams that will work to connect us to the future. They are: Connecting with God, Connecting with Each Other, Connecting with Creation, and Connecting with Community. The goals of the planning teams are to gather and sort your ideas, consult with experts to determine what can be done and what might be afforded, and then present "your plan to you. The planning teams are forming, and they are looking for your participation and ideas. If you want to know more, just ask Lisa or me and we will point you in the right direction. Stay tuned, because there will be updates in this space, in First Forums, Minutes for Mission and our Sunday bulletin. We will talk with you, soon! - Lisa Ettkin and Fred Daniels Stephen Minister of the Month In order that the congregation may get to know a little more about the skilled and faithful individuals of our congregation, trained to provide oneto-one compassionate care when life's challenges and crisis are better faced with the trustworthy companionship of caring Christian friend, we are delighted to introduce yet another of our Stephen Ministers: Gay Doolittle! Gay is an area native, having been born and raised in Albany. She and her husband, Alden "Joe," met when they were 10 and 11 at a Methodist church camp--the same one that both their mother's had gone to as children. She later attended Cornell University. Once married to Joe, Gay stayed home to raise their two boys, Ben and Josh. She worked from home with her own Window Treatments business and for 7 years as a designer of defense equipment for Breton Industries in Amsterdam. Those who know Gay know that she is a very skilled flower arranger. She has decorated at the Pruyn House for events and weddings and is responsible for many of the permanent arrangements around the church building. She is also skilled in combining live, dry and artificial arrangements. Gay says she inherited this talent from her mother, who held many awards for flower arranging in Albany. Gay's interests are not limited to flowers--she enjoys crafts of all kinds. She especially appreciates engaging in these activities with her two granddaughters, who live in CT. She and Joe often vacation with their granddaughters (and their granddaughters parents). Gay also is an avid gardener, loves feeding the birds, and is an excellent decorator in many settings including church. For example, the forest" of trees appearing in our sanctuary during Advent and Christmas is Gay's handiwork. For several years Gay was on staff at the church as our Hospitality Coordinator. She's ordained as an elder, is now serving as a deacon, and sits on the Property committee. She is also is an integral part of the Chancel Guild, the Justice Action Committee, and Group VII. Gay is one of our longest-serving Stephen Ministers. She attended the second training back in the 80's. After having various care receivers over the years she took a break, but is now "cheerily" active again. She decided to return to active status to enjoy the camaraderie of the other Stephen Ministers and because serving as a Stephen Minister has allowed her to get to know others in profound ways, and this brings her great joy. She feels truly blessed to extend Christ's care to others in this way. And we're blessed to have Gay as a Stephen Minister within our congregation! Aging in a Changing Landscape On Thursday, January 15, 6:30-7:45 PM, Laurie Bacheldor, Manger of Schenectady County Elder Care, will outline major health and aging system changes being rolled out by both the Federal and State levels, as well provide information on local services and programs. Discussion will follow on how to stay active and remain in our homes/apartments as long as possible. This presentation, sponsored by our church's Stephen Ministry, is open to all members of the congregation and others who wish to consider this topic; no sign-up required.

Questions/Feedback Gene Rowland (Rowland.gene2@gmail.com) or Joe Doolittle (aldenjoe@nycap.rr.com) Entered into Eternal Rest Harvey Schadler November 30, 2014 Lillian Roe December 31, 2014 Senior Moments Happy New Year to all! Abby and I extend our great thanks to all those who came to our house on January 2nd and to those who were kind enough to bring gifts. Consider this a public thank you card not only for your kindness, but for this wonderful community that brings us such joy brought the wonder and excitement of our new friends from Union Presbyterian that few would have anticipated just a few years ago will bring an exciting new vision for our building that Fred Daniels and Lisa Ettkin are putting together will bring visiting Christians from other countries staying with us and teaching us what it is like to be a Christian in other places. It will bring new learning opportunities and new challenges. I hate to pile up obligations at this time of the year, but think of this as a resource: Thomas Moore's recent book, A Religion of One's Own: A Guide to Creating a Personal Spirituality in a Secular World, is worth a read as are most of his works. The Breakfast Bible Bunch continues to prosper as a group that revels in engagement about the questions and answers of life. The problem is that the size of the group can hardly get any bigger. I am thinking about an ONLINE version that people can log into anytime during the week. If you are interested in participating in an experiment in spiritual engagement online, please let me know. There are all kinds of resources for meeting online these days and we ought to figure out how to do this. Speaking of figuring things out, you may have heard that a casino is opening up within two years five blocks from the church. The casino aside for the moment, there will be hundreds people in the hotels and dozens in the marina. What can we do to engage them? How can we help them? Finally, please let us know if we can help. The winter can get dark. Sincerely,
