It s on the sacred meal we eat each week in worship, sometimes called Communion, or Lord s Supper, or even Eucharist by some of us. Names matter of course, and so this note is about the name of the workshop. Those who are familiar with Marcus Borg s little book, Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, may appreciate the title I used for this day together, Eating Jesus Again for the First Time. It seemed like a good idea at the time. So while the workshop remains a good idea, spending time rethinking this wonderful practice Jesus gifted us with, the title has officially changed as of now. Rethinking Communion will offer us an opportunity to consider how those earliest Christian communities ate this meal and what it might mean to recapture some of their practices in our day. Regardless of what we call it, I hope pastors, elders, servers, and all who gather weekly to worship will consider attending. We will meet from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at New Vision Christian Church, culminating with a meal together. 2 2 OFFICE UPDATE Paula's Office Hours - Spring 2015: Due to a new class schedule, Paula's office hours have shifted and are listed below: Wednesdays: 9am - 4pm Thursdays: 9am - 4pm Fridays: 9am - 4pm Donna Foster will volunteer in the office on Mondays and Harold Watson will be in on Tuesdays. Paula will check each day so she can still update the prayer chain, add things to Happenings, and respond to c a l e n d a r i n q u i r i e s throughout Monday and Tuesday. Needs: Pantry needs this month are spaghetti noodles (onepound packages), canned spaghetti sauce and bath soap. Thank You for your continued support! Historically Lent has focused on various themes: mortality and eternity, confession and forgiveness, repentance and reconciliation, awareness and change, sacrifice and sharing, prayer/scripture and spiritual renewal, along with others. Someone has summarized Lent as a time of moving from ashes to resurrection. I suggest this not only summarizes Lent but also the Gospel: God takes our ashes and gives us new life. It is true for individuals, for families, for communities, and for churches especially during interims. During our Interim time together, God has raised us from ashes to resurrection a lifelong, reoccurring process. Wounds have healed. Discouragement has given way to hope, apathy to new purpose, confusion to clarity, and exhaustion to new energy. By the grace of God and the power of God s Spirit, the ashes continue to enrich our soil and a new spring continually comes. Lent is not limited to only 40 days; God brings new life from ashes whenever we allow it, whenever we invite it, whenever we yield to it. Hope to see you Sunday. Good News ~ Doug Join Us!! Title: "An Intergenerational Lenten Adventure" Who: For Adults and Youth (Chi Rho and CYF) What: A weekly time of fun, fellowship, scripture, prayer, & food (everyone bring a sack supper) Where: The Lounge. Sisters Bible Study... is cancelled for the month of March while Doone heals from her surgery. Please keep Doone in prayer while she continues to heal and gain strength.

3 3 Prayer Chain Updates: Michelle Carpenter (former Hillside member who moved to Arizona with husband, David, a few years ago) passed away after a long and difficult battle with cancer. We hold David and Michelle in our hearts and in our prayers; that David may feel God in every breath. Gary Langemach reports that his 91-year old aunt, Evelyn Shubert, had to move from her home in St. Joseph to a residential facility about a year ago. She was doing pretty well there, when she fell and broke her hip right around the new year. After surgery, she has been recovering very slowly in a couple nursing facilities, but recently got the flu which turned into pneumonia. I just got word they are taking her to the hospital, so I am asking for prayers for her comfort, healing and recovery, if that is God s will. My mother s sister is a dear loved one in our family, and mainly cared for by my mother (Darline Langemach) and sister (Sharon Bannon), so I also ask for prayers for them as well. Donna Stowell s family has made the difficult decision to have life support removed. We pray for Donna and her family as Donna begins her process of entering into new life. Bill Legg is in North Kansas City Hospital, Room 404, doing rehabilitation to get him back up and moving. Bill went into the hospital with pneumonia and has been having some difficulties. We pray for both Bill and Ann that Bill will recover speedily and that both of them will feel God s love and support. Ted Lingel is in Rehab at Newmark. We continue our prayers for Ted, Helen, and their family throughout his recovery. Doone Loughery is now home recovering. We praise God for a successful surgery and continue to hold Doone in prayer as she recovers. Maurine Edwards recently had surgery on her hip. Since she is in Florida, far from us in distance, but close to us in heart, we know Maurine appreciates our prayers, notes, and cards: 4303 Edgewater Crossing Drive, Jacksonville, FL Leroy Ellis of Pennsylvania, the brother of Paul Ellis, is under hospice care at Chambersburg. He has pneumonia and also other medical issues. We ask for your prayers for Leroy and his family Ernie Hook is back home in his apartment at Wexford Memory Support Center and Jan is recovering from her Achilles tendon surgery. We continue to keep them both in our prayers and rejoice that they are out of the hospital and recovering. Walt Kinate has experienced some set-backs. We pray for Walt s strength and for God s healing presence. We invite congregants to give Walt a call or send him cards expressing your care. It is truly remarkable how the congregation of Hillside has continued their support; the cards and calls come as regular as clockwork. The caring nature of the congregation and Doug and Shandra has been so constant that we search for words to express our thanks, you are truly a Christian body, for which we can only say thank you. ~ Leland and Letha Jackson Hello Hillside, So wonderful to receive any card or not from my Hillside family. Please start collecting and bringing hard bound and paperback books and place them in the bins in the north and south foyer. We are accepting books only this year please no DVDs, CDs, puzzles or magazines. The money collected will be used in the Food Pantry. 4 4 HOPE.wrx The Food Pantry was very blessed during the month of February. We have two new volunteers: Thanks to Rita Robinson and David Gardine for volunteering to work in the Pantry every Thursday afternoon. They picked a perfect day to volunteer as we had been short on volunteers on Thursdays. Three young ladies attending the University of Missouri, Kansas City, selected HOPE.wrx to volunteer in the Pantry on a Wednesday evening. They selected our Food Pantry to earn service hours for their sorority APO. They seemed to enjoy their time. It was perfect timing for these young ladies as the particular Wednesday evening they volunteered was the same day we were blessed to receive 200 pounds of ground beef. This beef was donated by Anton s located at 16 th and Main in Kansas City. The ground beef was donated in 14 pound bags and the young ladies repacked all of it into one-pound bags. On Saturday, February 21, HOPE.wrx had 11 students volunteer from Park Hill South High School. They were earning service hours as members of the National Honor Society. While volunteering for two hours, they organized the hygiene area of the Pantry, bagged 150 pounds of donated pancake mix into quart-size bags, bagged donated dog and cat food, sorted canned items and stocked shelves. They were very energetic and enthusiastic. IT WAS A GREAT MONTH FOR HOPE.wrx!! Trezo Mare Brunch Fundraiser Trezo Mare, located at Briarcliff Village, would like to give back to Hillside. On Saturdays and Sundays, enjoy lunch at Trezo Mare between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Mention that you are a Hillside member, and Trezo Mare will donate 20% of your bill to Hillside! This will be ongoing for the next three months, so please try to take advantage of this offer which benefits the church (and YOU)! Hillside s Weather Cancellation Policy With the winter season upon us, please remember that any Sunday service delays or cancellations are communicated through KMBC-TV channel 9. Any decision will be posted no later than 7:00 am Sunday Morning.

5 5 Financial Report Summary Because the church has recently switched to having The Miller Company track and record our finances, the timeframes and cut-offs have changed and they did not meet this month s newsletter deadline. The next Financial Report Summary will be in the April newsletter. My apologies for any inconvenience. ~ Jonathan Brightwell Board of Directors Meetings - - The Board of Directors wants to remind everyone that their meetings are open to anyone that might have an issue or question to bring to the attention of the Board. It is most helpful to let the Board Chair (currently Gary Langemach) know in advance so time can be allotted on the Agenda. At this time, the Board meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m., except for November and December when they meet on the third Thursday. 6 Children and Youth News 6 Parents Night Out will be March 13 th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Children and youth of all ages are welcome to attend. Dinner for that evening will be provided. Cooks for Parents Night Out are needed. YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL A fun, funky, fresh & Faith-Centered Youth Sunday School Class has started on Sunday mornings from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Ginger Hill is leading this new group. Join Us for fun and a great learning experience!! ATTENTION: YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS!!! A NEW Youth Alternative Worship Service is starting on March 17 th at 7:00 p.m. Youth and young adults 16 to 23 are invited to come. This service will be filled with inspirational songs, jam session, a message and communion. This service will be monthly on the third Tuesday of every month. Youth and young adults are invited to hangout afterwards and share in refreshments and cookies. Youth Mission Trips Summer Mission Trip forms are due to Pastor Shandra by Easter Sunday, April 5 th. If you are interested in attending a Mission Trip this year, please contact Pastor Shandra ASAP. You and your parent will need to sign a mission trip covenant form. A deposit of $60.00 is required to attend the trip.
