1 Search. Serve. Celebrate. The Lampstand August 2013 Celebrating Women in Scripture St. Edward s hosted its second celebration of Women in Scripture on Sunday, July 21. Participants got involved with the music with rainbow ribbon sticks (left), listened to readings from the Rev. Lindsay Hardin Freeman (above) and other ecumenical participants, and enjoyed Rachel Svihel s liturgical dance interpretations of the stories (right).

2 2 Musings of Mother Danáe I LOVE weddings. Lucky for me, I m in the right field and in the summertime, the fruit is hanging low and ripe for the picking. As a priest, I have officiated weddings, as well as done pre-marital counseling for couples. Now, as I work on my Marriage and Family Therapy degree at Adler Graduate School, I am becoming more skilled at giving couples insight and tools to build the best marriage possible. Pre-marital counseling is a wonderful, sacred time to spend with couples, plus it s a lot of fun! One of the things that I have been doing this summer is inviting local clergy to send their couples to me for pre-marital counseling because I see it as a ministry to my fellow clergy who may not have the time or energy for it, and I obviously do (remember, I LOVE weddings). It also assists in getting my clinical hours for my internship class at Adler, which is helpful and efficient (something else I love). As a result, I ve had some amazing couples come into my life this year. Being with August 2013 August Milestones Birthdays 8 Diane Kennedy 9 Trish Martin 20 Alli Scheig 22 Ashley Englert 29 Julie Scott Anniversaries 28 Julie & Stuart Smith 29 Margaret & Lindsay Wallace them reminds me why it is so important to mark our special events with rituals, like weddings, but also the smaller rituals in our daily lives, like breakfast together or bedtime rituals. In pre-marital counseling we talk about how our families marked special times in our lives birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc. and I encourage the almost newly married to create their own rituals and decide on which traditions to keep from each of their families, as a way of shaping how they want to be as a new-formed family. It is wonderful to see how creative and caring people are around both important and mundane times. As summer swiftly draws to a close, I encourage you to think about what rituals in your family take place. Birthdays and holidays are the easiest to start with. But what about the special things you do with each other each day or each month? Do you have a ritual around going to church? Our Episcopal worship services are certainly full of ritual think about the prayer book. Heaps of ritual in there! Ritual is flexible it changes as our needs change. Ritual also binds us together we remember each other in ritual, look forward to the next time, and miss it when it doesn t happen. I would love to hear about some of your family rituals, so think about them and tell me at church! ~ Be peace, be light, be love! Mo. Danáe+ Mo. Danáe will be on vacation August 21-31: Pastoral care between August will be handled by The Rev. Gretchen Roeck ( ). From August 26-31, Deacon Chip Whitacre will be handling pastoral care ( ). The supply priest for August 25 will be The Rev. Roger Sonnesyn. The Lampstand

From Our New Deacon It is summer and very hot and humid. Does this bother me? Yes; since wearing my collar for the first few times, I now know how it feels. Following ordination in July at the Breck Chapel, I am learning my new role as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in Minnesota. What a blessing! I want to thank all the members of St. Edward s for their support throughout the past three years. Your prayers, gestures of support and financial help means more then you will ever know. So, what is ahead? Only the Bishop really knows. I will be having a conversation with Bishop Brian in August around next steps for me. This could mean staying at St. Ed s or it could mean moving somewhere within the ECMN that he feels God is calling me. Whatever the outcome of these conservations, I am ready to be available. This is the call and the commitment of an ordained Deacon. I listen, discern and pray. 4 4 Same-Gender Marriage Law and the Episcopal Church in Minnesota (ECMN) As many of you know, the same-gender marriage law goes into effect on August 1, In mid- May, I sent out Bishop Prior s message to all our churches about this impending change in order for our community at St. Edward s to be informed and to be able to come to me with any pastoral concerns around this event. At the time of this writing, no concerns have arisen. Regarding the expectation for those who seek same-gender marriage in the ECMN, Bishop Prior said in his May 14, 2013 blog to the ECMN, For a number of our faith communities, this [law] will now provide them the opportunity to provide to all of their members who desire to make a life-long, covenant relationship and to be legally married in the state of Minnesota to do so. The Vestry Profile: Fritz Wright I came to the Episcopal Church by marrying an Episcopalian several years ago. My lovely wife Lese and I came to St. Edward s in 1997 under the Hoover administration Judy, not Herbert. Our son Brendan (10) was baptized in 2003 while St. Edward s was housed at Wayzata Community Church during our rebuilding. Monday through Friday I m a sales rep for Hooper Holmes Portamedic selling paramed exam services. The rest of the time I m a husband, dad and volunteer. I enjoy baseball in the summer and skiing in the winter. I ve been a Little League coach the last four years and am having great fun with it. I consider myself a bit creative, a dreamer and closet entrepreneur. I spend my free seconds making up jokes and stories trying to make people crack a smile. Your Co-Warden, Fritz Wright Church s expectation for the couple is the same as for opposite-gender couples. This includes all the same preparation and instruction about marriage in the Episcopal Church that have been required of opposite-gender couples. Bishop Prior s Pastoral Letter from July 8, 2013 states, Foremost in my mind is the need for each of us to offer a generous pastoral response to members of the Body of Christ as a means to both seek and serve Christ in all persons and to respect the dignity of every human being. This is a baseline expectation for each of us, and as I have come to know you all, I believe that this is one of our strongest gifts. What this means in specific terms: it is important for each member of the clergy canonically resident in the Episcopal Church in Minnesota to determine for herself or himself what a generous pastoral response might be to same-gender couples who present themselves for marriage. Reflecting on the Bishop s words reminds me that our congregation has a strong history of being open and affirming to all who come through our doors. This is evidenced in the fact that we have had two partnered lesbian priests as well as one partnered gay priest lead our congregation at different times in the past decade. It is with this consideration and with the affirmation of who we are as a parish that the Vestry and I feel comfortable in inviting same-gender marriages to take place at St. Edward s. The Vestry will be talking about this in our August meeting and I encourage you to speak to me or a Vestry member if you have concerns. ~ Mo. Danáe+ August 2013 The Lampstand

5 Community News The Marchewkas have landed in Greensboro! From Janice Marchewka: It s been quite a journey... we travelled through 8 states, major construction through the entire state of Illinois, rush hour in Indianapolis, awesome wind farms in Indiana, beautiful horse ranches in Kentucky, Daniel Boone park, Blue Ridge/Smoky Mountains, and after 1200 miles made it to Greensboro with two kids and two pets and no major incidents. Not bad! Thank you to all our MN friends who gave us such a wonderful send off, we will miss you. We took a drive by our new home. The foundation is there, but little else. Looks like it will be a few months before we can offer a room at the Marchewka bed and breakfast. Once we are operational you re all invited! The Marchewka Family Al and Judy Starkey s daughter on HGTV s International House Hunters The Starkeys daughter, Sarah, was on HGTV s International House Hunters on July 15, The show featured the home Sarah built in Costa Rica. If you missed it, be sure to ask Judy to show you some pictures. It s beautiful! A note from Episcopal Homes Many thanks for the abundance of beautiful garden plants delivered to us at the Episcopal Homes Campus! We had a jolly time planting. They are all thriving and getting rave reviews. Also, many thanks to the delivery driver and his darling daughter. With much appreciation from The Garden Ladies Marge, Elaine, Judy Greening Ministry & Gardening Angels I ve been wishing for months that we would find a new parishioner who had majored in Turf Management. We contracted with TruGreen to repair and reseed our two front lawns, and so far the results have been disappointing. We will keep after it until we have a nice green turf of new grass and no weeds eventually. Meanwhile we held a committee meeting looking for help and answers on other subjects relating to our grounds. We had a very successful meeting finding lots of things for Fritz to do. Otherwise, we came up with an idea: There is much maintenance to be done relating to our plantings, especially in the area of weeding. How about an Adopt-A-Patch campaign? Families or individuals could sign up for a 10 foot strip, for instance keep it cleared, but not be stressed by the enormity of our four+ acres. Meanwhile, Jill and I will get back to work on the rock garden. The ditch (someday to be a creek) should be shoveled out. Then stones from up in the old center island could be used to line it. Would take some effort, but no money. We spent a lot of time discussing the patio, killing the weeds there and making it presentable as an extension of our undercroft. Our downstairs is a great area to be rented for wedding receptions and other parties. The patio, stone bench and eventual garden across the creek will be an asset. We further discussed regrading and paving the patio, especially with pervious pavers. Judy and Miles will look into this. Another suggestion: a campfire some night with songs and some mores, using downed branches for fuel. We welcome other ideas from the congregation, especially if they don t cost anything. Fritz will bring our ideas to the Vestry at next meeting. Judy Starkey and the Gardening Angels 5 The Lampstand August 2013

6 6 Outreach and Action Outreach updates Vicksburg Commons: We had a good service and brunch on July 14 for the people at Vicksburg Commons, and even had a couple people from the community attending the service. People from the congregation brought cleaning supplies which were distributed to needy families. (Photos from the event are on the opposite page.) We also provided supplies to a new family moving into the complex such as cleaning supplies, paper products, bathroom and kitchen rugs, a shower curtain, and hand towels. We will be starting the lunch meal again this month on the third Wednesday (August 21), and will need volunteers to help out. If you are available and interested contact Jeff or Chip. Then we will be starting the evening meal in September on the fourth Wednesday. Families Moving Forward: We will be cooking and serving a breakfast at St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church down the road on County Rd. 6 on Saturday, August 3. Amy and Hollie will be organizing this, but will need help cooking and serving as well as supplying food. There will be a sign-up sheet in the gathering space. IOCP school supplies drive: IOCP is asking for school supplies for its needy families. There is a list of needed items in the gathering space (and also on p. 3). You can bring the supplies to church and we will get them to IOCP. All items need to be brought to church by August 11. Sandwich Team: We still have members of our congregation going down to St. Mark s Cathedral every week and making sandwiches; and others who distribute them. August 2013 It s Lemonade Stand time again! We will be doing our lemonade stand again this year at St. George's Catholic Church for the Corn Days Festival in Long Lake on Saturday, August 10 and Sunday, August 11. We need volunteers to work at the booth both days. We usually figure 3 hour shifts; times are Saturday, 1:00 to about 8:00 pm; and Sunday, noon to 5:00. Join us for some fun! There is a sign-up sheet in the gathering space. We also need supplies like sugar, cups, and ice or money to buy these items. Episcobuilders/Habitat project EpiscoBuilders ( a group of Episcopal Churches that support Habitat for Humanity projects in the western suburbs) is participating in a rehab the week of August 6. Several in the St. Edward s congregation are supporting this program by providing meals and morning snacks. Please pray for the project in general and also for the families that will soon be able to have their own home. People who qualify for these homes actually will have a mortgage with payments equaling 30% of their current salaries. They all must put in between hours of sweat equity, attend classes on basic home repairs, and learn about being financially responsible. The Biggest Rummage Sale ever!! Wayzata Community Church is once again having their rummage sale on Wednesday, August 7 and Thursday, August 8. The net proceeds from the sale are always between $100,000 - $200,000 with all of the money going to various outreach programs. This is a good program to support and is always fun to attend. See further information in the gathering space. The Lampstand

7 Some thoughts about Second Sunday: Faith in Action 7 As we continue to grow into our new worship and ministry on the second Sunday of each month, I have some thoughts I d like to share as co-warden of St. Edward s Vestry. The idea behind the Second Sunday: Faith in Action service projects is to engage the entire congregation in putting our faith into action amongst the wider community. This is a wonderful opportunity to spread the Gospel to people who may not have experienced God s love before and would never darken the door of a church. Best of all, through our outreach, some may even be motivated to visit St. Edward s because they have benefited in some way from our ministries! From the start, our intention was to provide a mixture of on-site and off-site ministry activities on the second Sunday of the month. Not surprisingly, there has been some concern that when we go out to serve the wider community we may miss some Sunday morning worshippers who are visiting St. Edward s for the first time or after an absence. While this may happen, we hope that some will be attracted to the very fact that this is how we currently are living out our faith as a parish. And, if not, there are numerous local churches where they can find the worship experience that they seek and that s okay! We need to be authentic to who we are as a parish right now. We cannot escape the fact that St. Edward s is not beset every Sunday by newcomers seeking the Good News. And we are not the only church or denomination facing this reality. Perhaps this is a sign from the Holy Spirit that our call, like that of Jesus disciples, is to take the Good News out to our neighbors. Viewed this way, our greatest obstacle becomes our greatest opportunity. Rather than anxiously awaiting people to come to us, we are freed to proactively pursue our parish mission to feed our wider community spiritually, physically and artistically by taking our ministries to them. On the 2nd Sunday: Faith in Action program for July the St. Edward s congregation held Morning Prayer worship at Vicksburg Commons several from this community worshiped with us. After the service a brunch was served. The Plymouth Police sent 2 police officers to visit with the children and several of the more mature members of the congregation! The children sat in the police car, got handcuffed, and, hopefully, learned that the police are their friends. That being said, Our Second Sunday: Faith in Action is still a work in progress, and the Vestry welcomes your ideas! In fact, we are seeking individuals to join a Second Sunday committee that will identify service opportunities and organize activities around them both at St. Edward s and elsewhere. If you are interested in learning more about the committee or becoming a member, please contact me, Fritz Wright or any Vestry member. Yours in Christ, Ginny Cassidy, Co-warden The Lampstand August 2013

Your thoughtfulness helped us to feel surrounded by love at this time of great loss. My mother had a long and active life. The presence of many friends at the visitation and funeral gave us a chance to hear stories about her many contributions to her church and community. We were fortunate to have visited with her just the week before she died, and we had many good conversations and laughs with her and some of her dearest friends. She will be missed by many, and even though her death was sudden and surprising, everyone knew that she didn t want to live the way she August 2013 was and that gives us all a measure of peace in her loss. We are confident that she has gone to be with her family and friends and all the saints who have gone before her. Death of the Rev. Charles Wickman Blessings, Chip and Family The Rev. Charles Wickman, long time deacon at St. David s Episcopal Church and also the deacon at St. Edward s for several years died Sunday, July 21, in Minnetonka. His wife, Mary, preceded him in death. Services were held at St. David s on Monday, July 29 with burial at a later time in Escanaba, Michigan. While at St. Edward s Charlie and Mary were active (and often winning) participants in the St. Edward s Bridge Club. The Lampstand
