2 As We Gather Have you ever been so thirsty that you felt like fainting? When you are dehydrated, your muscles become weak. You can hardly think straight. Your vision might even be blurred. You experience a kind of exhaustion that suddenly overwhelms you. Maybe that hasn t happened to you physically, but has it ever happened to you spiritually? That s what the salmist is talking about in salm 42. He describes himself as a soul that is parched. He experiences despair at the seeming victory of the godless and his separation from God s merciful presence at the temple. In the midst of his despair, his desire is for the Lord to be near to him. We, too, should desire God s presence, hear His Word, and receive the salvation that He gives in His Word. In the midst of our suffering and troubles, and against all appearance to the contrary, our Lord Jesus is our Savior who dwells with us and is there to quench the thirst of our souls. Amen. onfession and Absolution We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy. Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from conception. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. leanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given His only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of hrist and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 2

5 Gospel Reading Mark 8:27-35 Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of aesarea hilippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, Who do men say that I am? 28 So they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets. 29 He said to them, But who do you say that I am? eter answered and said to Him, You are the hrist. 30 Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him. 31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke this word openly. Then eter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked eter, saying, Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men. 34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel s will save it. 27 Alleluia Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it. 5

6 onfession of Faith Apostles reed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus hrist, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under ontius ilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy hristian hurch, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
