We are Methodists, and what better way to bring in the new year than through a service based on Wesley s original Covenant Service. The heart of the service, focused in the Covenant Prayer, requires people to commit themselves to God. This covenant is serious and a wonderful way to start the new year. January 13, 2019-Church Officers Blessing & Dedication will be during worship! January 20, 2019-Fellowship dinner after worship. Bring a covered dish to share. Fine Art of Disagreement Fine Art of Disagreement: coming Sundays at 9:15 AM starting January 13 th and running for 6-8 weeks. Our disagreements frequently hoarsen our voices, but rarely change our (Continued on page 2) Full Circle A few years ago, I purchased a piece of exercise equipment off craigslist. It served me well until old sports knees reminded me how past excesses can lead to present aches. I posted my equipment for sale on craigslist. It sold in one day to the person from whom I bought the equipment! It seems he was needing to get back into an exercise routine and realized what he needed was what he had in the first place! It was quite the full circle experience. One of John Wesley s biggest fears was that the people called Methodists would exist as having only the form of religion without having its power. At the same time, he knew the remedy: hold(ing) fast the doctrine, spirit, and discipline with which they first set out. Beginning January 13th, we will take a 7-week journey, rediscovering St. Andrew s UMC through the sanctuary s stained-glass windows that tell the story with which we first set out. Coming full circle in our spiritual lives is about realizing what we need in the first place. How might the windows from our past serve as windows to our future? I hope you are able to attend all of these services. Here s to a 2019 of moving forward in ministry with our community and our world. -Pastor David

Framework Framework is a 7-week sermon series based on the images found in the stained glass windows of St. Andrew s. How might the windows representing our past also be windows to our future? Come and learn the stories that never grow old. Please join us for this new series, which will begin January 13, January Movie Night The movie for January s Movie Night is The Man from Snowy River. January 13, 2019 at 5 PM This 1982 film, with its unforgettably heroic story, its stunning cinematography, and performances that are excellent, is one thrilling adventure you won t want to miss. Set during the 1880 s, when the Australian frontier was as wild and dangerous as the American West, the film follows the exploits of a handsome youth (Tom Burlinson) who sets out to tame a wild herd of horses. Taking on a challenge many men had attempted before him, he rides deep into the treacherous and untamed wilderness of his native land where boys become men fast or die trying. Featuring Kirk Douglas in a remarkable dual role and highlighted by a climactic chase involving 40 horsemen and 90 wild stallions thundering across snow-covered peaks, we are sure you won t want to miss this Movie Night. Bring snacks to share and meet in the Fellowship Hall! Night to Shine What are your plans for the evening of February 8, 2019? WHAT? You don t have plans yet? How can this be? It is only the best event of the season. Depending on your role, you can even dress up (YES, on purpose) and not leave the city limits! Of course, you can also volunteer as a parking lot attendant and keep the entry clear for the limos! What could be more exciting than that? Wherever you d like to help, we want to make that possible! This is our second Night to Shine, so we have (most) of the kinks worked out in registering volunteers and guests. The logistics are all going to be new though because we ll be hosting Night to Shine at Vineland Elementary! We have also increased the number of guests, so that means we need more volunteers too! If you d like to volunteer, you must complete the paperwork and have a background check. The background check is very simple if you volunteered last year and easy enough even if you didn t. There are forms in the fellowship hall and church office. If volunteering isn t really your gig, you can also help with preparing decorations in advance of the event, by making a dessert for the respite room, or by donating gowns, ties, costume jewelry, and other fancy attire. (The planning committee would be extremely happy with a 4 top-hat event, and we currently only have 1 top-hat.) Regardless of how you become involved, Night to Shine is a wonderful event, and you will certainly be blessed by the evening. Contact the church office or Pastor David if you have any questions. 2

3 Annual Conference Priorities (Part 2 of 3) This month, we ll focus on New Places for New People. There are 5 kinds of New Places for New People: 1. Small Groups-a group of 3-12 people that gathers at least twice a month to experience what it means to Know, Care, Grow and Share. 2. Recovery Ministry-a group of any size that helps people recover from addictions, e.g., Christian 12-step approach or Celebrate Recovery. 3. Missional Community-an ongoing group of any size outside the walls of a church that offers the good news of Jesus Christ to unchurched people in a neighborhood or community around a specific need or interest without the expectation that people will come to a church building (e.g. missional communities can take place in bowling alleys, fitness centers, restaurants, VFW halls, homes, workplaces and more.) 4. New Worship Service-a group of 15 or more that meets at least twice monthly to experience the Living God and reach persons not currently involved in a worshiping community. 5. New Church or Multi-site-a new stand-alone body of believers or a new site of an existing congregation created to reach new people. There are grants available for these New Places for New People, and the deadline is February 1, The grants can be used for any of the five kinds of places. There were so many children and families blessed last year through your generosity. From Valentines, Pony Bird, A Safe Place, Festival of Sharing, the mitten tree, and all the other projects between, you have always been there to help. At a similar latitude and longitude to ours but on the other side of the world, the average January temperature is 60 F. Wouldn t that be nice? Of course, that is just about the height of summer in La Roche Godon, a french territory in the southern Indian Ocean. Back to Missouri though, and our bitterly cold Januaries the food pantry needs items! Here are suggestions for this month. oatmeal canned fruit soup beans spaghetti o s 3

We ve set up a way for you to identify which information is okay to share. If you ve already set up your privacy preferences, there s no need to do it again. However, if you haven t done this yet, it is important that you let the church office know about your privacy preferences. It only takes a couple of minutes. You can call the office and get it checked off your New Year s resolution list. Bell Paper Snowflake (How to ) 1. Start with a square piece of paper. 2. Fold the paper in half diagonally to make a triangle. 3. Now, fold the triangle in half so the pointy corners meet. Step 2. Step 3. St. Andrew s family, I can t thank you all enough for the amazing snack package that was sent-a few tears were shed when it was opened. It means a lot and even though I only had one final this semester, I felt no guilt eating them. I even shared a few with my study mates, which I felt was incredibly Christian of me. Hopefully this was my last semester as a perma student where I have to take finals, but we ll see. The baking supplies are also very appreciated. I m in the works to use them to make a recipe titled Sugar Rose Brioche. Hopefully it turns out. I hope everyone is doing well and if anyone from St. Andrew s finds themselves near the Smokies, they re more than welcome to visit. With Love, Lauren Nuckols 4. Fold your triangle in thirds. You may need to adjust these folds a little to get the sides to match up, so don't crease the paper until the folds are just right. 1st fold of Step 4. 2nd fold of Step Cut across the bottom of your paper so it is straight. 6. Cut your resulting triangle to make a snowflake. Use the pattern below as an example. Step Then unfold it gently. No two snowflakes are ever alike. 4
