Isaiah 43:15-16, 19: 15 I am the Lord, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King. 16 Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. (The Message) My October Lantern Article was titled, Accepting and Living Our Seasons of Change. We were challenged to live up to the covenant we made with God upon agreeing to fulfill the Vital Church Initiative (VCI) prescriptions that were recommended in order to maintain life and restore the vitality of Wayne 1 st UMC. The prescriptions are designed to enable us to thrive as we fulfill the command to make disciples for Jesus Christ. We will restart the VCI process this month. So, since we are on the cusp of a new year, the topic of change continues. In the words of the prophet Isaiah, God is about to do a new thing and God can and will make a way for us to succeed. A popular colloquialism cited today when someone repeatedly does something that is not working is, how s that working for you? Perhaps a good question for 1 st UMC Wayne is, how is what we are doing today working for us and will it carry us into the future? Continue to spend time in prayer before the Lord seeking the spiritual zeal necessary to become transformed vessels who are willing and ready to make changes for Christ. The God who makes a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert will make a way for us to do what God requires of us. My prayer is that the Lord our God will prepare our hearts, minds to be vessels of change on our journey to become the Church God calls us to be. 2 AGREE TO DISAGREE It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Eph. 4:11-13 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. Psalm 8:5 God created us in His image but a little lower than Himself. He can do all things, but we are limited. He created us as family so that we are dependent on each other. You can do things I can t do, I can do things you can t do but together we can pool are talents and do great things. The Holy Spirit has given each Christian special gifts for building up the church. Now that we have these gifts, it is crucial to use them to strengthen and build up the church. This involves preaching, teaching, healing, nurturing, giving, administering, building, and many other tasks. If we had to fulfill this command as individuals it would be impossible. But God calls us as members of his body. Some of us can do one task; some can do another. And as the body of Christ, we can accomplish more together than we would dream possible working alone. However, our individuality does create a problem. We come from different cultures, raised by different parents with different talents and ideas so we are bound to sometimes disagree. There used to be a sign in the adult Sunday School class, I don t remember the exact wording, but it went something like this, we agree to disagree and resolve to serve in love. We start by disagreeing in love. Then, because we all have a common goal, that is to be one with Christ and to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit to do what s best for the church. The early church gives us an example o how to resolve our disagreements. So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas and Matthias. Then they all prayed, O Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosen as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs. Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other eleven. Acts 1:23-26 They prayed, they cast lots and trusted the Holy Spirit to help them make the right decision. Today we vote but first we should pray then trust the Holy Spirit to lead us. Then join together and serve in love. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy! Philip. 1:4 Red Miller 2

3 Star of Christmas Party A BIG thank you to all who helped out at this event. Although small in attendance, we were large in spirit and donations. The hats, mittens/gloves and scarves that were collected were donated to the Wayne-Westland Family Resource Center. We all enjoyed fun crafts, and the healthy veggie refreshments that went along with the Veggie Tale Star of Christmas movie. Thanks again! Plans are under way for next year s party. Linda Owulette, Education Chair and Linda Maylone, helper ****************************************************** CHARIS CIRCLE CHRISTMAS GIVING 2018 During the year Charis Circle collected $ total by freewill donations at our monthly meetings. Money was distributed as follows: 1. $50.00 local family. A single mother with four children. 2. Heifer - $50.00 for honey bees and a flock of chicks. 3. Save the Children $40.00 to Global Action Fund (Multiplies by 10 times) 4. World Vision $25.00 (Multiplies by 5 times) for medicine & supplies. Charis Circle invites anyone interested to join. Our circle meets on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. We would love to have you join us. 3
