THE KNIGHTLY NEWS VOLUME 3, ISSUE 4 Father Michael C. Kidd Council #14455 October 2009 CHAPLAIN S COUNSEL My fellow Knights, We will rededicate our Memorial to the Unborn on the first Saturday of the month after evening Mass. Plan to participate and stand for life. There are also various prayer vigils, in Waldorf and even closer outside an abortion clinic in Greenbelt. October 24 will be a busy day for us. We participate both in the SOME Breakfast for the poor and we shall be conducting our annual Halloween Party for the children. Please be generous with your time. It would be great if everyone in the council plays a part. Hopefully, we will be making some ground this month in regard to our long-awaited modular building. It will have four small but desperately needed classrooms to help in the religious education of our parish children. Please keep me in your prayers as I have further medical tests and procedures this month. I have a terrible aversion to white coats but must surrender even this into the hands of God s providence. October is a month of many commemorations: a special Marian Month, Respect Life Month, Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month (which straddles September and October). We remember that all human life is incommensurate in value and sacred. We acknowledge that people should be proud of their heritage but also count all those in the human family as their brothers and sisters. We also look to Mary who intercedes for each and every one of us as her son or daughter. Autumn is upon us. What a wonderful time of the year. Leaves are turning a golden brown and the beautiful evening sunset is a sight to behold. What a wonderful place to be, in Maryland, America in miniature! Along with the aforementioned images, it seems to me we need to foster and support a positive attitude on life. So many of us predict rain on the day of the picnic! We are simple negative! Think about it: have you ever met a truly negative person? They are really a trip! You just want to run away and hide! You want to feel good and they want to regale you with their terrible problems. You have never had a more terrible time than they have had; you simply can t imagine the horrible boss they have or the level of pain with which they suffer as they struggle to get through the workweek! Seriously, I know people like this; I m sure you do as well. Please God, if you happen to be one of them who is reading this column, don t read another word without first saying this prayer: Please dear God, give me a positive attitude about life. Help me to see the sunshine and to feel the joy of laughter. Help me to know that all will be o.k. since God is in His heaven and all is really going to be o.k. with the world. All too many of us are dull and grey when we have another person s ear. We need to get hold of ourselves and be happy for a change. Sometimes people hurt themselves living in the darkness of depression and the grey of a gloomy day. We are people of light, of the day, of the warm summers and gently fall season of autumn. We are not supposed to be that negative and that down on ourselves, or our lives, so as never to be able to pull ourselves out of the dreariness of melancholy! During my years as your District Deputy, I have tried in these columns to give you something to think about. On several occasions I have received s from a number of you thanking me for concentrating on the positive aspects of life. I hope all of you will concentrate on the positive and not the negative. Life is good because God made it and He doesn t make junk! Vivat Jesus! O great and glorious God, You imbued Your holy priest. Father Michael J. McGivney, with deep priestly virtue and especially with pastoral concern for the poor, the orphan, the widow, for the Christian education of youth, for the protection of the faith of the working man of his day. Now that his priestly ministry continues to spread to countless millions throughout the world, through the efforts and influence of the Order of the Knights of Columbus, which Father McGivney founded, we beseech Your, Heavenly Father, to raise Your faithful servant, Michael, to the honors of the altar. We ask this favor through our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother, Mary and our Mother, Amen. 2

Membership James Murry We had the following birthdays in September: Dave Thomas, Saturnino G. Foronda, Mark Manapul, Bob Worthington, Cresencio Manzano Sr., Deacon Hank Dardy, Perry Concepcion, and Dr. Alamezie Ojiaku. We have the following birthdays in October: Fred Michael F. Laureles, Danilo B. Arellano, Tunde Oyalowo, Geony J. Provido, Conrado A. Ong, and John E. McInerney Spousal birthdays in September were as follows: Joan Kaczor, Michelle Daniels, Hazel Cayetano, Denise Moore, and Helen Dela Cruz. Spousal birthdays in October are as follows: Sharon Doucette, Ginny Waters, Marie Oyalowo, Ommil Lim, Sarah Barias, and Beth Manapul. We also had some September wedding anniversaries: Terry and Pat Reinhart, Gualberto and Gemma Balbuena, James and Mickey Mewshaw, Tiffanie and Alan Johnson. October wedding anniversaries are as follows: Eddie and Helen Del Cruz, William and Joan Kaczor, Akinbode and Bheng Akinola and Winefredo and Sarah Barias. The Membership Campaign is THE YEAR OF THE VOLUNTEER. Our challenge is to build on our foundation of service as witnesses to others in serving the Church and community. If we are to meet our goals, then we must constantly harness new energy and fresh ideas we must grow in membership. Every Knight has a moral obligation to ask all eligible Catholic men to join our Order. Members should always carry a Form 100 on their person. Every good Catholic man should be a Knight! MEMBERSHIP BLITZ The first State/District Membership Blitz for this fraternal year will be conducted during the months of September through November The Membership Blitz is an all-out effort to maximize our membership team s effort by canvassing the parish after Masses and gathering the names of prospective new members for follow-up. Our Blitz will be in the last week of September and early October. Jim Murry See Calendar for pending degrees dates. Chancellor Report James Murry Prayers for the Sick & Distressed As good Catholics and Knights, we are obligated to pray for the suffering, the sick and the dead. We are a young council and as of yet have no deceased members. But remember, we can also pray for friends and family. If you know of anyone who should be included in our prayers and Masses, please do not delay in contacting me. Brother Knight Edward Kopczak is getting to Mass but is still recuperating from a stroke. Theodore C. Haaser (Collington Nursing) should also be remembered. Our Advocate and cochairman for Church Activities, John McInerney is still limping along. Perry Concepcion is out-and around, but should still know the comfort of our prayers. Father Jenkins our chaplain asks to be remembered when he takes medical tests on October 6. He also asks that we pray for his mother who can no longer speak. Manny Rodriguez has had a long hard struggle with illness, and while not a Knight, has been instrumental in his participation with Brother Andres Padilla and others in the good works of the parish. Please add him to your prayer list as well. Vocations Keep our sponsored vocation, Deacon Rodolfo Salinas in your daily prayer intentions, too. Program Director Geony Provido, DGK Becoming C Council: The Challenges Ahead We have crossed another threshold. Fr. Michael C Kidd Council has grown in membership and is now considered a C Council. What does this mean for us? It is plain and simple. We are entering another phase in our growth curve. We are joining the big league. This is a time when the standard rises a notch higher from membership to all our other initiatives as a Council. The C category is the most numerous in the State and so we are going main stream. We are no longer a baby council. Any shortcomings are no longer easily excused. Our organizational behavior is expected to be maturing. The drama of self-discovery should be making way for executions based on strict adherence to sets of protocols that embody the Knights of Columbus. We have to credit ourselves for our above par performance that catapulted the Council to the C -league. But at the same time, we need to be conscious of where we find ourselves. We are one of the smallest and youngest members of this division. The question is: Can we perform like most other Councils in the division? My answer is plain and simple: YES WE CAN! The next question will be: How are we to do it? Obviously, the answer lies in doing what brought us here in the first place: membership. This brings into the crosshairs something which we might have taken for granted the Membership Blitz! 3

We need to make sure we get additional members into the Council. We need more committed brothers to volunteer for our Committees. More members mean more resources, and more resources mean more and better delivery of our avowed services to our members, to the community, and to the congregation. This is one sure way to accomplish more than what we did in the past. In addition, we need to optimize the use of resources that we already have. I can only imagine the boundless energies that might be harnessed if all of our members were actively engaged in our activities. Indeed, nothing can beat 80 or more knights singularly focused on fulfilling the mission of the Council. And hopefully, Council No can continue in the direction of achievement and success. Let me end my piece on a lighter note. Last Saturday (Sept. 12), the second to the last prior to the autumnal equinox, the day was cloudy and seemingly unremarkable. But this was not so for Council #14455! We held our inaugural Fr. Michael C. Kidd Golf Tournament to cap off our Summer Sports Fest. It was a show of sportsmanship in its purest form. A number of our members, some swinging their clubs for the very first time, inched they way slowly but surely on the greens. It was a spectacular display of camaraderie. Scouring for opportunities, turning rough stones into polished gems, this is the trademark of Fr. Kidd Council. In this case, we turned an uneventful day into a very memorable one for brother knights. And yes, we really do care for each other. Church Activities John McInerney/Vincent Hubbard Run for Vocations One of the Council s Knights, Barry Hickey was signed up to participate in the upcoming Marine Corps Marathon on October 25, 2009 as part of the Run for Vocations Team of the Archdiocese of Washington. The registration for the Marathon was $100 and Barry hopes to raise at least $350 for the HALF- MARATHON through sponsors for his effort. The full marathon is 26 miles! The Archdiocese advertises it as a unique experience to get into great shape, accomplish an amazing goal, meet new people and support our seminarians and work of vocations. All levels of runners and walkers are welcome. Barry is himself a former seminarian, indeed he went to the same college seminary as our own Chaplain and the pastor of Holy Family Parish, The Seminary of St. Pius X in Erlanger, Kentucky. Fundraising directly benefits the seminarians and the work of vocations in the Archdiocese of Washington. The Archdiocese of Washington provides each seminarian with an education, housing and food. Yet, other unexpected expenses occur and that s where donations made in the name of the Run for Vocations team come in. In the past, they have covered seminarian medical costs, travel expenses in the event of a family emergency, etc. The money collected will be sent to the Archdiocese. Books for Seminarians The new school year has begun. We are in communication with the Archdiocese and hope to make a distribution of spirituality books very soon. The names of the recipients and their seminaries will be published in the newsletter. Each college seminarian will be given a paperback copy of the spiritual classic, DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL by St. John of the Cross. Handy Knights Our men are being contacted to see if they can form a group of volunteers to help in the general maintenance of the parish: things like carpentry, painting, heating, air conditioning, plumbing, and general repairs. This might be one of the most important ways we can help the parish. We may not always have much money, but we can spare a little time and offer our talents in the service of the Church. Please contact John McInerney or Father Jenkins if you want to join. Knights of the Altar Some of our men became Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. But Knights of the Altar can also function as Readers and as Altar Servers. Father Jenkins often has no server for Masses. We should always be ready and willing to fill-in. Would our men be willing to take over the service of 7:30 AM Mass? Sometimes, even at the 9 AM Mass on First Saturday, he has no server. Can we not pledge at least 30 minutes before the exposed Blessed Sacrament? Will a few of our men PLEASE serve the altar and thus help to edify God s people with the beauty of the liturgy and to give glory to God? Father Jenkins desperately needs our help. Monthly Obligations Please do not forget our monthly Corporate Communion Mass (October 28). Our numbers have not been what they should be. Remember also our commitment to 30 minutes or an hour at the monthly First Saturday Eucharistic Adoration (October 3) from 9:30 AM to 5 PM. We need to be men of prayer! 4

A PRAYER FOR OUR PRIESTS (Say this prayer daily and after Knights of Columbus meetings.) We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry. Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf: Fill your priests with the sure knowledge of your love. Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit. Lead them to new depths of union with your Son. Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us. Lord Jesus Christ, grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holiness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will. O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son. Intercede for our priests that, offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. St. John Vianney, universal patron of priests, pray for us and our priests. Community Activities Andres Padilla S.O.M.E Saturday October 24 is the next breakfast service at So Others Might Eat (SOME) in Washington DC. The community at large bears the responsibility to care for those in our society stricken by hunger and homelessness. Our council has already established a tradition of cooperation with organizations serving this segment of the local community. It is why council members are asked to support SOME on October 24 through individual donations of food and volunteering to cook and serve breakfast to approximately 400 people. A list of needed food items will be distributed separately via . Once again, we will pickup surplus goodies at Dunkin Donuts local stores. Service hours are from 6:00 AM to 9:30 AM. Involve your family and friends. This is an excellent opportunity for students seeking to meet school community service requirements. Tootsie Roll Campaign The Tootsie Roll campaign kickoff to raise funds in support of the intellectually disabled is around the corner. Brother James Moore, the Tootsie Roll Campaign Chairman, has called upon the membership to sign up for a 2-hour shift between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM at the following locations and dates: September 26 Safeway, Northview Dr, Bowie Town Center October 3 Giant, Crain Highway South, Bowie October 10 Safeway, Fairwood Parkway, Bowie The campaign will conclude at Holy Family with the weekend Masses on October 31 and November 1. The signup sheet will be distributed via e- mail message. Family and friends are welcome to participate as well. Please pray for the success of this campaign. Veteran s Day In honor of those who served our nation in the Armed Forces, a special program is being planned for Veteran s Day Wednesday November 11. The program is to be combined with Mass or Prayer Service and will include singing the national anthem and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a roll call of past service members (deceased and alive) from our council and Holy Family church and concluding with a short prayer. Cake and punch may be served at the hall after the ceremony. Please reserve this date and plan to attend this event. More details will be published in the November edition of The Knightly News. Catholic Advocacy Network The Maryland Catholic Conference in partnership with all the parishes in the state will be conducting an in-pew registration drive from mid September through October for the online Catholic Advocacy Network. The MD State K of C want the appropriate chairmen and volunteers to be involved with MCC alerts and events in the areas of Education, Family Life, Respect for Life, and Social Concerns. Our Worthy Chaplain Father Jenkins would appreciate it if Knights would both sign up and help with the in-pew registration drive to get parishioners more involved. Please standby during upcoming Masses to assist Father Jenkins with distribution and collection of forms. Health Care Reform Please reflect upon the following excerpts from an article in the Archdiocese of Washington Department of Social Concerns Newsletter Ignite on the topic of Health Care Reform: The Catholic bishops of the United States are taking an active position regarding health care reform. The following statement summarizes their position. In our Catholic tradition, health care is a basic human right. Access to health care should not depend on where a person works, how much a family earns, or where a person lives. Instead, every person, created in the image and likeness of God, has a right to life and to those things necessary to sustain life, including affordable, quality health care. This teaching is rooted in the biblical call to heal the sick and to serve "the least of these," our concern for human life and dignity, and the principle of the common good. Unfortunately, tens of millions of Americans do not have health insurance. According to the Catholic bishops of the United States, the current health care 5

system is in need of fundamental reform. You may read the full statement in the USCCB website mphealth.shtml. Social Encyclical The new Pope Benedict XVI's social encyclical Charity in Truth (Caritas in Veritate) is now available and can be viewed on the Vatican s website: Council Activities Daniel Njingeh Concessions at Stadium This is our most important fundraiser, please participate! We have three Redskins games this month. We need 9-12 volunteers per event. The uniform is black pants, dark shoes, and a "can do" customer service attitude. Bring an official ID, park behind the Sears store at Landover Mall, and walk to board the shuttle buses to the stadium. Please contact Brother Kevin Renze ( ) with your volunteer date preferences. He has to turn in the names for the games. Required training is available on Saturdays at 10:00 AM sharp. Oct 04 Tampa Bay 1:00 PM Sun. Oct 18 Kansas City 1:00 PM Sun. Oct 26 Philadelphia 8:30 PM Mon. Nov 15 Denver 1:00 PM Sun. Dec 06 New Orleans 1:00 PM Sun. Dec 21 NY Giants 8:30 PM Mon. Dec 27 Dallas 8:20 PM Sun. Fr. Michael C. Kidd Inaugural Golf Tournament Our Sports Coordinator Mark Manapul put together a golf outing on September 12 at the Paint Branch Golf Course at 4690 University Blvd., College Park, MD Everyone was welcome, even those who had not played golf before. We spent an hour clinic in the driving range and then proceeded to the course. The fee was $16 per player. To level the playing field (although we are all beginners anyway), we used the Scheid Handicap System. This simply means the higher your scores the more you are qualified for credit deductions. We will try to give better advanced notice on the next effort. Family Activities Barry Hickey Our activities for the first quarter revolved around a series of presentations: flowers for Mother s Day; St. Joseph holy cards for Father s Day and ice cream for the children and the whole family at our Ice Cream Social. The next quarter will focus upon the joys of childhood. We will sponsor a Halloween Party in October and a Lunch with Santa in December. Children s Halloween Party We are hosting this event on Saturday, October 24 from 12 Noon to 4:00 PM. We will need help with food (hotdogs, soup, chips, and dessert), decorations, candy, games, etc. Tickets will be sold at the door ($4). Join the kids in coming in costume. The parish s teens are being asked to help run games, serve food, set up and clean up. Family of the Month The family for August is that of our Warden, James R. Mewshaw, Jr. Congratulations, Jim! Employment Assistance Program When a Brother Knight s ability to care for his family is made difficult by the loss of a job or the need for better employment, we are ready to help. The Employment Assistance Program is part of Family Activities for the Maryland State Council. Our goal is to provide assistance, support and prayers for those of our Brothers who may find themselves in need of our help. We offer job search assistance, advice on continuing education and/or training, resume assistance, interview coaching, a network of brothers and support and a helping hand. The State chairman is Pat Ruckle at psrbelair@aol.com or by phone at Natural Family Planning Are you interested in learning how Natural Family Planning (NFP) can strengthen your marriage? Please join us for our upcoming NFP series at Sacred Heart Parish. The series consists of 3 separate classes, beginning Wednesday, October 14, with the remaining classes on November 11 and December 9. Classes begin at 6:30 PM and go to approx. 9:30 PM. 7 notices were going out with details. All boys and girls were welcome to participate. Results will be published next month. Flashlight Corn Maze Holy Family Youth Group will be visiting the Corn Maze at Montpelier Farms on Saturday, Oct. 10. We will meet at 6:30 PM at Holy Family, travel to Montpelier Farms (MD 301) for an adventure through the Corn Maze. Cost is based on number attending but begins at $10. RSVP to Pam no later than Oct. 1. Chastity Day The Archdiocese of Washington annually sponsors Chastity Day for 8th-12th graders. This year s talk is Mixed Messages - Love vs. Sex. Holy Family s parents and teens will attend on Oct. 19 at St. Mary of the Mills in Laurel. There are talks for parents while the teens are having their session. We will meet at Holy Family at 6 PM and travel to Laurel for dinner prior to the 7:30 PM presentation. Please RSVP Pam at Pro-Life Activities Paul Batson 2009 Pro-Life Memorial Day Since the U.S. Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton in 1973, 51 MILLION babies have been surgically and medically aborted - millions more have been killed chemically. This staggering death toll is the direct result of these two decisions. On the first Monday in October, the U.S. Supreme Court begins its new term. This is a day on which pro-lifers across the nation will mourn the victims of America's hidden holocaust: abortion. Who will hear the cries of these preborn children? Who will be their voice? Who will mourn their deaths? On Monday, October 5 thousands of Americans nationwide will be mourning the victims of abortion by gathering for prayer and candlelight vigils at the U.S. Supreme Court and abortion facilities nationwide, wearing the official Pro- Life Memorial Day 2009 T-shirt and engaging in many other activities. Pro-Life Tee-shirts Remember the preborn children none of us ever got the chance to meet. We sold commemorative Pro-Life tee-shirts for $8 each (the cost of the shirt with shipping and handling charges) after Masses on the weekend of September 12 and 13. It would be great if we could take a picture of some of our Knights wearing the shirt when we rededicate our Memorial to the Unborn on October 3. We still have a few shirts left, mostly medium and small sizes. However, know we have a limited supply. Rededication of Memorial We will rededicate our Memorial to the Unborn on Saturday, October 3, It is the weekend of Respect Life Sunday. There will be special pro-life intercessions at all Masses. We will gather after the 5:30 PM Mass, offer a Rosary for Life and blessing over the symbolic grave site. Please join us for this annual witness to the sanctity of life. Prayer for Peace The attendance of the prayer service commemorating 9-11 fell far short of our expectations, even though it was announced in the newsletter and published with flyers in the weekly bulletin for Holy Family Parish. Our chaplain thanks all who participated, especially the youth groups from Holy Family and St. Edward. This year we moved the gravity to include the terrorism of abortion. Mother Teresa reminded us that there can be no true peace while we are at war with the child in the womb. 40 Days for Life From September 23 through November 1, Washington DC will be uniting with cities from coast to coast for a simultaneous pro-life mobilization. 40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life prayer campaign that over the past four years has generated measurable life-affirming results in the 240 cities and nations where it was launched. It is an ecumenical, faithbased effort made up of two key components: Prayer and Fasting: inviting people of faith throughout the area to join together for 40 days of fervent prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. Peaceful Vigil: standing for life through a 40-day peaceful public witness outside the Metropolitan Family Planning Clinic (abortuary) at 9515 Greenbelt Road, Berwyn Heights, MD For more information about the nationwide effort, visit For local efforts, please visit For any other questions, feel free to contact Tony Pauletti the GK of PG Council 2809 at (a.pauletti@verizon.net) or Thomas Trunk at (40daysforlifeMD@gmail.com. Tony is putting together a schedule for those keeping vigil! 7

News From Supreme Supreme Knight Karl A. Anderson Excerpt from Eucharistic Congress I am reminded of the procession celebrated on the feast of Corpus Christi every year at St. Mary s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, where the Knights of Columbus was founded. The Eucharist is carried in a monstrance, and laymen, usually members of the Knights of Columbus, carry a canopy above it. Along the sides of the canopy are words from the great hymn of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Panis Angelicus: Ecce panis angelorum / factus cibus viatorum. Behold the bread of Angels made the food of travelers. Of course, on one hand we are all travelers in that we are moving toward death and eternal life. We are travelers who, to borrow from St. Augustine, are restless until we rest in God who is Love. The Eucharist is the food of travelers in that it is the nourishment for our pilgrimage on earth which is in reality a continual transformation into being a true likeness of God who is Love. But we are also travelers in the sense of being missionaries, being those perpetually sent out. We are all called to love, and part of answering this call is making love known to the world. And I think the canopy and its quotation bring this out. In procession, the people of the church walk as travelers with the Eucharist through the streets of their everyday city, past the university and workplaces, past homes and past homeless shelters. Carried through the streets, the procession is a living sign of a spiritual reality: that through us, the Eucharist reaches every corner of every life; there is no area which cannot draw strength and meaning from the Eucharist. (See Supreme Website for Complete Text) State Council Report State Deputy Richard V. Siejack The MD State Family consisting of 45 attendees recently returned from an exciting 127th Supreme Convention in Phoenix, Arizona. The messages were clearly stated in the themes: The Year of the Volunteer and We stand with Peter in Solidarity with our Bishops and Priests. As directed by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI this is The Year for the Priest and we as Knights and our Councils are called to serve their needs and support our religious in any special way we can. Special kudos to the Maryland State Council for attaining the prestigious Circle of Honor along with 46 Councils and Districts achieving the Star Council/District Awards with 10 Councils receiving the Double Star Council Award. The many comments of praise made by our Cardinals and Bishops on the works and services by our Knights and Families certainly make all of us truly proud to be part of an organization that affects in such a positive way the lives of so many people. Yes, we are called and answer that call to do God s work! As you know, I challenge you to attain the prestigious Star Council Award and even the Double Star Council Award. Remember, you and your lady are expected to carry a Form #100 on you at all times and be prepared to ask a Catholic man and his family to join our Order. Never leave home without it. A special reminder, your continuing support of the Incentive Car Raffle, Columbus Day Ball and preparation for the October Membership Blitz are critical elements in the success of your State and Local Councils. We are called to Serve. Jesus I Trust In You! Vivat Jesus Fraternal Benefits Roger L. Doucette, PGK John Canter Retirement Income You Can t Outlive People are living longer today than in any other time in history. While this is certainly a good problem to have, it creates a new worry for those facing retirement: what if I outlive my savings? How does a retirement income that you cannot outlive sound to you? This sounds pretty good to most members and this can be true if you open a Knights of Columbus annuity, which is designed to provide guaranteed long-term security. As a knight, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into this annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. Couple that guarantee with the fact that no one has ever lost money put in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember, absolute safety of principal) and you will have peace of mind. Don t forget contributing money into an annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And our annuities offer a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. These benefits are similar to those of an IRA or similar product, but ours is backed by the strength and financial stability of the Knights of Columbus. At your convenience, I will happily meet with you to explain in detail the benefits of selecting our annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance and long-term care insurance plans. As you consider options as you proceed toward retirement, think about the one thing guaranteed to help you and open a Knights of Columbus annuity. Call me let s talk. RD 8

Carwash, June 28 A poem on carwash? A carwash poesy for K of C? Nay it ain t funny any lecturer would say Give me a break, that s serving soupy dishes cold. But Sunday afternoon s are a break alright. Prayers come with sighs for surf and sand; minds tarry where mercury plummets to gravity. The summer heat tempts, go hit the road when the closing hymn ends. Not on the 28th of June or so the signs say: Carwash for $12! Pay $17 if it s your house on wheels Support the youth of Holy Family Church! Leave and you won t be blessed, that s the threat Drop your car and pick a snack. Grab a can of soda: different flavors, or so the labels say (they come cheap wholesale, 12- and 24-packs.) Get chips to go, but take just a pack. (This is a fund raiser, for all we care.) Our Deputy Grand Knight (Geony Provido) is our council poet. In the left column is his latest effort. It is in regard to our support of the Holy Family Youth Group and their fundraiser. He has written several other poems, one which rejoiced about the day when twenty knights from the council were elevated to the Fourth Degree. And so the nicest people dropped their cars and sat and quietly munched a helping of chips, hotdog or burger (perhaps they ll taste filet mignon and éclair) And there s Pam barking an order when we pitched the newly-bought tents (instruction on box: they re preassembled, just stretch them out and drive the pegs to the ground) There s Ramon in summer shorts giving us all little pieces of work. There s Fr. Joe, exuberant, taking it all in, walking around, triangulating the rectory. church and pitch tents, satisfied with what he is seeing. We all know he meant to say it s your show, guys. It s the matinee of the youth. And so in teams they turn the faucets on, squeeze water out of the sponge, rub foam on grit and gluey bird droppings; their energy comes from knowing it s not a job but a ticket to a youth trip somewhere. Dutifully they worked. One after another the cars move up the queue. They hosed, lathered and wiped a myriad of droplets off glass and metal chunk. Once they get tired and bored, they turned the hoses to each other Enter Andres, getting them back on track. Rag in hand he poked the tarred underbellies, ran his touch on metal trims. And there s Pam again. The sign is gone from the road. Do it over, the gales mistaking it for tumbleweed. On the sideline, Jim midwifes brimstones trapped by sheer weight of grimy grill, his frantic fanning makes sure everything turns out medium rare. Manny, Fritz and wife Sheila taking turns with the foil wraps. It s service deluxe, they ll point to you where to find the condiments. There s Father Joe in the tents saying thank you with ghost stories. There s Dave with his magic tricks and Tim counting all the money, or pretending to as the cars thinned and stopped coming. We gave the last rites to the dying throes of spent coal. Ice over fire, there s a surplus from the coolers even after kids scooped handfuls to rub on their tummies, much to their delight, we don t know why. Ice over fire, freed spirits sizzle and race up like incense burning. We took the tents down, gently molding them back to their old fetal pose. Task is done, everyone settles for what s left of the oeuvre. 10

Pictured on the right of our Chaplain Father Joe Jenkins are his brothers Michael and John who both served as Grand Knights of St. Mary of the Assumption in Upper Marlboro. His brother Paul (on the left) became a Knight over a year ago. Paul s son, Matthew, also pictured, is 18 and had a very special week. On Monday he took his FIRST DEGREE as a Knight. On Friday he became an EAGLE SCOUT. On Saturday, he headed off to St. Thomas More College in New Hampshire. Invite your brothers, sons and nephews into the Knights of Columbus! Be a family of Knights! Geony Provido and Bill Kaczor are awarded as golfers in our Sports Fest. Here we see Father Joe, our Chancellor Jim Murry and our Grand Knight Terry Reinhart with our sponsored seminarian, Deacon Rodolfo Salinas. Bishop McNamara President Preston Rose poses with Secretary Bryan Adamczyk at the Installation Dinner. Pictured on the right is the upper part of a statue of St. John Vianney displayed at the church by that name in Prince Frederick, MD. He is the patron saint of parish priests. Remember to daily pray for priests and vocations. 11
