Our services are all slightly different, but each offers a friendly space in which you can worship God and be part of God s community. St Andrew s at 8am: Holy Communion is a less formal worship service. St Luke s at 10am: Holy Eucharist has a more formal style of worship. The Eucharist is also celebrated at St Luke s on Thursdays at 8:30am. St Andrew s at 5pm: Sunday Night Live or 4:30pm: Messy Church (3rd Sunday of each month) is a space for families with children and the young at heart to join in informal and fun worship, discussion and activities. At our Sunday morning services you will need the middle pages of this booklet to join in the prayers and the Psalm that we read together. If you need a gluten-free wafer at Communion, please tell the person who welcomed you at the front door before the service. 2 From the Parish Reflection Sam Collins - Bible Society My name is Sam Collins. I have been married to Kylie for 15 years this December and we live in Umina Beach. We have 4 children! Gemma (12) Lucas ( 9) Ethan (7) and Annaliese (3) Our family attend HopeUC and we meet in the Peninsula Community Centre in Woy Woy. Our life is full! I have been in schools for many years as a Teacher and a Chaplain here on the Peninsula. I have been in Pastoral Ministry since I am honoured and see it as a blessing to be working alongside the combined churches on the Peninsula. In December 2017 I put my hand up for a fulltime role with Bible Society Australia as a Church and Community Relations Representative. I visit and speak in Churches, Schools and community groups. It is a privilege to be able to partner with churches across all denominations and individuals to get the Word out to people, in Australia and to the nations of the world. For more information on the Bible Society. I enjoy playing Cricket and Rugby and I am trying to improve my golf swing. Recently, as a family we have started participating in the 5km Parkrun at Woy Woy on Saturdays. I am looking forward to meeting the members of the Anglican Church Woy Woy. Blessings, Sam Collins 2

3 From the Parish Dr Andrew Browning visiting MU Wednesday 3rd October Dr Andrew Browning, obstetrician and fistula surgeon, will be the guest for MU at St Andrew s. Dr Andrew spent 13 years in Ethiopia and Tanzania and now continues his work operating and teaching in Malawi, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Chad, Uganda, Congo, Sudan, and Togo as well. The lives of countless women and babies have been saved and transformed. His work is supported by the Barbara May Foundation. There will be morning tea at 9.30am followed by a short service at 10am and Dr Andrew will speak about his work from about to 11.45am. Everyone is welcome. Parish Service - 30 September Today we welcome Sam Collins from The Bible Society who will be preaching. There will be a retiring offertory for the work of the Bible Society today and next week. Lunch will be served following the Service when Michael and Peter will give a presentation on their trip in the apostle Paul's Footsteps. Suggested donation for lunch $6. St Luke's Cleaning There will be a Working Bee on Saturday 20th October 10am-2pm prior to our St Luke's Day Service. Social News Would any members of our congregation be interested in having lunch at 12 o clock at the Bayview on the second Sunday of each month as a social outing. Please contact Jacky King or the office if you are interested. Bible Studies The Tuesday and Wednesday bible study groups will be in recess for 2 weeks. Tuesday bible study will recommence at 1.30pm on 16th October at 104 Gallipoli Ave, Umina Wednesday bible study will recommence at 7pm on 17th October at 1/13 Clifford St, Umina. Newcomers are most welcome at either group. Prayer for all in Newcastle Diocese As the diocese considers future strategies maybe we can each pray this prayer Come Holy Spirit of God, restore the lives which, without you, are lifeless and dead; kindle the hearts, which without you, are cold and dull; enlighten the minds which, without you, are dark and blind; fill the church which, without you, is an empty room; teach us how to praise and pray that we may grow together in love and have courage to make wise decisions as servants, messengers and ambassadors of God's reign, all this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. You might like to reflect on this thought for the week: Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can it be seasoned? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. 5 Readings for this week 2 Timothy All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. John I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. 6 James Above all, my beloved, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your Yes be yes and your No be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest. My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. The Gospel: Mark John said to him, Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us. But Jesus said, Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterwards to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. If any of you put a stumbling-block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.
