Without a doubt it is one the God s most beautiful creations. As always at events like this you come away with a renewed sense of commitment, hope, and a call to action. We were asked to write an action plan for the next six months to answer a call to strive for excellence in our personal lives as well as our commitment to United Methodist Women in the New Mexico Conference. Here is what I wrote and I would like to share it will all of you We will not Hold Back in our commitment to the Purpose of United Message from the President Methodist Women and living our motto of Faith, Hope and Love in Action. We will with God s help and all of us working together create new avenues of mission. We will implement new meaningful leadership development opportunities. We will make the New Mexico Conference Pledge to Mission for Start today to think of painless ways to achieve this goal by being faithful to the pledge your group has made to the District and the Conference, to increase your personal giving and sending the pledge in a timely manner. We will grow! Invite that woman AGAIN who may have been invited before but may not have joined yet be persistent we know how to do that! Who do we include? We include every woman in our church, in our social circles, those teen girls we need to reach in a positive way to open those avenues of mission. We will create personal space for ourselves but at any given opportunity we will do it for others. We will pursue Happiness We will build on the (Continued on page 2) 1

Bishop Bledsoe will lead us in worship, and Albuquerque District Superinten- dent, Rev. James Large, will assist him with communion. Speakers, presenters and entertainment are being lined up. 3 V o l u m e 2 8, I s s u e 2 M e s s a g e s f r o m D i s t r i c t P r e s i d e n t s P a g e 3 Albuquerque District Dear Sisters, I m writing this the day after our District Meeting in Farmington. In the last 3 years we have held our District Meetings outside of the Albuquerque area. We have taken our message to the corners of our district. It is amazing that we expect our sisters outside of the population center of our districts to travel to the main city within our district, but the road doesn t seem to go the other way. Our sisters in the main population area don t seem to be inclined to attend meetings that aren t within their city. It saddens me that more members do not attend the district meetings that are outside of their city. They miss an opportunity to enrich their UMW experience. The Albuquerque District is blessed with two UMW supported missions and other general church missions within its boundaries. Both UMW supported missions were represented as was one of the general church missions. Our theme was New Beginnings and 40% of our offering, plus in-kind gifts were designated to support the New Beginnings program at the United Methodist Navajo Center in Farmington. They were also our featured speaker for the meeting. I encourage all of you to attend District meetings that are held in cities outside of yours. It does stretch your comfort zone, but it helps you understand the challenges they en- counter when they are expected attend the meetings in your city. You will have the opportunity to learn more about their local organization and some of the things they do to raise money for missions, and some of the local missions they support. I challenge all of you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new, in the way you raise funds, support missions, or attract new members. Hoping to see you at mission u. Linda Haverty Clovis District God has blessed us with an abundance of moisture this year, so our land is covered with yellow, purple, and white wild flowers as well as lots and lots of GREEN! Is God awesome or what? The Clovis District just finish our District Meeting. We find that we are doing well, we have all our officer positions filled. We had good fellowship and wonderful worship together! We were also blessed by the presence of our Conference Treasurer, Mary Mims. It was a joy to meet her and we look forward to working with her. Next year s meeting will be hosted by the Alamogordo Grace Unit. Keep your calendars open for the beginning of April and plan on attending our next meeting in We had two unit closures this year, Artesia, and Wesley Alamogordo. We are all praying that they will re-open as the Cimarron unit did last year. Like all our districts, Clovis District is working hard to bring in new members and find ways to step out of our comfort zones and spread God s word. For a lot of us our comfort zone means not that we are comfortable there, just that it is familiar, it is what we know and we know how to deal with that. Stepping out of that place means that we are in uncharted territory and that we don t know how to navigate this new land, we have to learn something new and allow ourselves to feel something new. We have to truly let go and let God. We have to step out in faith, give up control to God. God knows what we are capable of, he has given us the tools and put us in the places where he wants us. All we have to do is stay quiet long enough to listen to him. In today s fast paced world that is hard to do, but certainly not impossible. It really is a matter of taking time for God! Take a breath, sit down and pray, and then listen, because God will answer! I pray each and every one of you will feel the arms of Christ wrapped around you! Your Sister in Christ Sherrie Goff 3

4 P a g e 4 T h e W o r d S o w e r M e s s a g e s f r o m D i s t r i c t P r e s i d e n t s ( C o n t ) EL Paso District Blessings to each of you I have wonderful news and more wonderful news for the NM Mexico Conference UMW Ladies. Each and every one of you should give yourself a Huge Pat on the back for all the hard work you do and your generous support to Missions. It is because of this Woman s Division UMW has provided the Monies for some much needed work for one of the Missions we support that Mission being Houchen Community Center in El Paso. Money is being provided for a much needed new roof, cooling and heating system plus the gym floor being totaling redone. I know many, many Prayers were lifted up to our Loving God for the money to solve some of these problems as well as many tears shed. From the bottom of my heart I thank you for your generous donations to Missions. Loving thanks to you all Dorothy C Barthlow Hello Everyone! Hope everyone is well as we are coming into the spring season. This would be my first article as I take on the Secretary position in the Conference level. I am excited and pray that this year, as United Methodist Women we will thrive and succeed in whatever God has in store for us. So it s C o n f e r e n c e S e c r e t a r y rather difficult to tell you all what the job requirements are for being a local organizational secretary since you have one thing to do which is to Take Notes! If you can do that, then you are off to a good start! I think over all a good secretary is one who takes good notes, and one who is organized with their notes. It will save you frustration and hassle in the long run. I m sure there might be some other advice but if any of you are new to the Secretary position like I am, then we can definitely learn from each other this year! Many Blessings to you all, Ruth Ann Heredia Conference Secretary 4

5 V o l u m e 2 8, I s s u e 2 P a g e 5 C o n f e r e n c e C h a i r o f N o m i n a t i o n s Calling ALL United Methodist Women. Are you interested in learning and participating in Mission Opportunities? Are you interested in participating in leadership opportunities? As we approach a new conference year, many opportunities exist for us. If you know if any women, who you feel show leadership skills and have a passion for United Methodist Women, please let your Nominating Committee know. We will be electing nominees for the United Methodist Women Board of Directors, Member of the Program Advisory Group, and members of the conference team. We will also nominate women to serve on the South Jurisdiction Leadership Team. Please contact any member of your Nominating Committee: JoAnne Buckley, Kay Martinez or Cheryll Felder. All members belonging to local United Methodist Women within the conference boundaries are members of the conference organization. Members of the conference organization may be asked to serve on various boards, councils, commissions and committees of the conference, jurisdictional and/or national organizations as needed. C o n f e r e n c e T r e a s u r e r We had great weather and great fun at the March 12 th workday and the 13 th 15 th Spiritual Enrichment Retreat. It was nice seeing all of you on the mountain at Sacramento. While at camp, a special offering of $ was taken and the money given to the Legacy Fund on the special day of giving March 23 rd. District treasurers, please have your third quarter remittance reports to me by June 15 th. (Sooner would be appreciated.) Please keep in mind becoming a Five Star Award unit; what s required is giving in each of the five mission areas: Gift to Mission, Gift in Memory, Prayer & Self Denial, World Thank Offering, and Pledge to Mission. The Pledge to Mission giving must be an increase of at least $1.00 over the previous year s pledge. I m looking forward to seeing you at Mission u on July 17 th at Sacramento. My contact information: Mary Mims, 5717 Mirage Court NW, Albuquerque, NM ; ; and mmims68@comcast.net. If I can help you, please do not hesitate to contact me. Here s one last bit of financial information: below is an excerpt from the United Methodist Women Board of Directors Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee. [It was] also shared that in 2014 United Methodist Women Mission Giving reached 99.2 percent of the amount pledged. In addition, 28 United Methodist Women conferences exceeded their pledge to mission, 26 conferences kept their pledge the same as the previous year and eight conferences increased their pledge amounts. In addition, 19 conferences gave more to mission in 2014 than in You can go on-line and read the entire article at g/news/united-methodistwomen-board-of-directorsmeets-in God s blessings on you all. 6 P a g e 6 T h e W o r d S o w e r MISSION EDUCATION AND INTERPRETATION As many of you know from reading Response magazine, the United Methodist Women are highly concerned about alleviating and hopefully eliminating three major social evils: Domestic Violence which has been a major emphasis and concern of many groups and progress has been made because of the concern of many, although always there will be more to be done. Immigration, especially of youth and families, is ongoing because of ambivalent attitudes and in many cases a lack of cohesive action in communities and a NMBY (Not in My Back Yard) or taxes that are having to be spent on support for them. Human Trafficking in prior times was called what it was/is: SLAV- ERY. There are laws against it everywhere but we are the most offending nation in the world in regard to it. Atlanta is the worst, but none of our cities and probably many smaller towns are not immune to it. As long as there are homeless families or throw away children this will be a problem. When children and youth are on the street, they are looking for any way to get out of the weather and hopefully the dangers there. In most cases, when they accept shelter, prostitution, violence and threats ensue. We need to investigate our communities and see how we can help alleviate this disaster to our children and youth. A book to read on this subject is: Refuse to do Nothing by Shayne Moore and Kimberly McOwen Yim. It is on the UMW Reading Program. Peggy Blackburn The Reading Program Leads to Action! For 140 years, United Methodist Women have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. The purpose of the program is to encourage United Methodist Women members to: Expand understanding of and participation in God s mission. Increase sensitivity to all human beings their needs, interests and concerns. Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today. Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life. Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge. Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission 6

7 be just. be green.---creating Sustainable Events What Is Sustainability? I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live. Deuteronomy 30:19 God calls us to choose life. In Deuteronomy, Moses speaks about God s expectations of the covenant with the Israelites. Most of what God had asked for in Deuteronomy is summed up in Jesus great commandment: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul and love your neighbor as yourself. God says to the people whether in the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament: Choose love. Choose care. Choose those things that make for life by loving God and loving neighbor with all the complexities and commitment of heart and soul and mind that involves! In the 21st century, one way we can live out loving God and loving neighbor is found in practices of sustainability. Sustainability is all about Love. It s about hope. It s about reflecting and recognizing that the ways we ve been accustomed to short term conveniences and individual gains in our economy and excessive waste is truly not Love and often supports hopelessness. Practices that enhance sustainable relationships between people and the earth are Love. Acknowledging where we ve been indifferent and selfish and turning to this new life together is faithful, hopeful Love. In sustainable practices, *We recognize that habits formed by and reinforcing injustice and inequity are simply not Love and we determine to commit to more just and equitable ways. *We learn, relearn, and prioritize the practices that honor and love God s whole work in the Creation. *And in this way, we restore the damage we ve caused to the earth and its communities, prevent future harm, and preserve natural resources, species, cultures, languages and ecosystems for future generations. Sustainability is all about choosing life, choosing care, choosing Love. It is about living wisely, justly, and joyfully in each decision we make so that all of us may live with dignity to our full potential, now and for generations to come. (be just. be green. manual) Together we can do it! Watch this space. To read and learn more visit I m excited to hear what you think! Ellen Lipsey elipsey@telstar1.com (432)

United Methodist Women members mobilized in every conference using the Internet, toll-free calls, smartphone mobile giving, mailed-in checks and pledges to participate in the organization's first annual "A Day of Giving" on March 23. The effort is a part of United Methodist Women's five-year celebration of its 150th anniversary in 2019 by strengthening and passing on its legacy of mission. Social media played a significant role in promoting A Day of Giving with March 23 Facebook posts reaching more than 40,000 with 2,500 "likes and shares," and United Methodist Women's website getting 6,800 "hits" on that day. United Methodist Women's website received more than 15,000 "hits" from March 22 to March 25. A Day of Giving gifts totaled nearly $100,000 with more than 60 percent of the $83, received given online and another $11,314 in pledged gifts given by phone and mail. And gifts are still arriving daily. "I couldn't be more thrilled with the groundswell that this has started," said Martha Sherman Knight, treasurer of United Methodist Women. "Online giving tripled in the month of March even before we reached the actual Day of Giving." The Legacy Fund's income will ensure a regular source of support for the core expenses of being in mission. It will provide for administration of United Methodist Women's grants, scholarships, mission personnel, membership nurture, leadership development and technological updates of data and communications operating systems. The Legacy Fund's provision for such expenses will free future generations of United Methodist Women to raise and budget their Mission Giving dollars in different ways that enable them to connect even more directly with women, children and youth. Throughout the fiveyear 150th anniversary celebration, every member of United Methodist Women is invited to contribute to The Legacy Fund. While any amount is welcome, members are asked to consider commemorating the year United Methodist Women foremothers first organized for mission with gifts in increments of 1869 $18.69, $186.90, $1,869, etc., or honoring United Methodist Women's years of service with gifts in increments of 150 $15, $150, $1,500. 11 Date: April 13, 2015 To: CC: From: South Central Jurisdiction United Methodist Women Conference Presidents South Central Jurisdiction UMW Leadership Team South Central Jurisdiction UMW Program Advisory Group Yvette Richards, Andris V. Salter, Sally Vonner and Harriett Jane Olson Edna Hickman, South Central Jurisdiction UMW President Re: QUADRENNIAL MEETING OKLAHOMA CITY, APRIL Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center It is only about a year away before we will be meeting in Oklahoma City and the time will be here before we know it. I hope you are beginning to feel the EXCITEMENT in the air as we began this countdown journey together. A fresh wind is blowing all across the South Central Jurisdiction and it will settle over Oklahoma City, April at the Convention Center. Your South Central Jurisdiction Leadership Team has been very hard at work preparing what we feel will be a memorable experience for all of us. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP! At the very beginning of our meeting, we will have a processional. We are requesting that each conference will bring a PINWHEEL (see next page) or a symbol of what you think will represent a fresh wind blowing. The pinwheel should have the name of your conference and the names of your districts. A person representing your conference will carry the pinwheel in the processional and will place it on the stage. The stage will have several steps that the person will have to be able to climb. The pinwheel should be on a stick to be placed in a beautiful and colorful garden that will remain on stage during the duration of the Quadrennial Meeting. On-line Registration will be available on our website. Please let all of our members know that our website address is: and it is up and running. Beginning around the middle of May, you should be able to go on the website and register on-line as well as find out information about the hotel and make your reservation. ALL information about our Quadrennial Meeting will be there including information about the workshops, speakers, music leader and other program participants. Conference Presidents will also be receiving information from our Registrar, Linda Elms, within the next few weeks. Please be looking out for that information. Also, be looking out for our newsletter within the next few weeks. If you do not receive one, please contact Jurisdiction Secretary, LaDonna Busby. We will need a volunteer from your conference to serve as an Usher or a Communion Server on Sunday Morning. These persons will be used to help during Communion with our Bishops and with helping in directing the members to the Communion stations. We also need your help in getting the word out to our members especially the local churches. We are hopeful and prayerful that you will include information about this meeting on your website (if you have one), in your newsletters and make an announcement at every meeting, including Mission U, Annual Meeting, retreats or any other activities that you may come together as United Methodist Women. 11

12 You should have already received the following information: A memo from Judith Okerson, Chair of the Governance Committee and Harriett Olson, General Secretary/Chief Executive Officer on the Process for Securing Members of the National Organization of United Methodist Women, That memo indicated that your conference will be electing nominees for the Board of Directors of the United Methodist Women at your 2015 Annual Meeting; also nominees for the Program Advisory Group of the United Methodist Women. Your Conference Treasurer received a letter from Jeanette Grenz, South Central Jurisdiction treasurer concerning a $ scholarship from the Jurisdiction for a person or persons to attend this meeting with priority to be given to a young person or a first time attendee in order to encourage them to continue to participate. However, the final decision will be made by your conference as to who should receive this scholarship. Jeanette is also requesting assistance from the conference treasurers with collecting the offering during our Sunday morning session. In addition, we would like to encourage your conference to prayerful consider financially assisting someone who may want to attend but do not have the means to do so. We consider it an honor to serve with you and we are thankful and grateful for all that you do and are doing to make our Quadrennial Meeting to be the success that we know that it will be. We'll exchange our own ideas about happiness. The study leaders will be Dee Dee Hefner and Dodie Hawkins. Latin America will concentrate on the South American continent, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean, their history and socio -economic perspectives. It will also explore the region's rich culture--music, art, dance, literature and food and the belief, faith and religion in Latin America. Linda Finch will lead this study. The teen age girls will participate in Created for Happiness with us. Ellen Lipsey and Ann Plante will lead them in the Latin America study. There will also be fun activities planned. 20 Created for Happiness: Understanding Your Life in God The early Methodist tradition used the language of happiness often. Not only did John Wesley preach and teach about happiness but his brother Charles wrote hymns about happiness that the early Methodists sang. The happiness they sought was happiness in God. This study examines the understanding of happiness and how to live the life that God calls us to Latin America: People and Faith Latin America: People and Faith is an overview of the richness of Latin America and its people for readers on the North American continent. The study examines the history of the region from pre-colombian times until colonization and the struggle for independence. It also explores the current challenges of the nations, along with their rich art, culture and the ongoing contributions of women. The role of religion is woven throughout the pages and will help the reader understand how Latin America has been influenced by various religions and faith traditions. Photos by missionary Paul Jeffrey offer a glimpse of the work of The United Methodist Church in the region The Church and People with Disabilities: Awareness, Accessibility, and Advocacy The intent of this book is to build awareness in the church regarding issues around disability, to call the church to provide full accessibility to services and opportunities, and to promote advocacy for justice for people with disabilities.
