1 Pastors and Staff, Lead Pastor Curt Weaver, Pastor of Youth Britt Carlson, Pastor of Community Life Rachel Joy, Administrator Church Office 1312 SE 35th Ave. Portland, OR WELCOME! Whether you are full of faith or full of questions, whether you are ready to jump into the life of the congregation or wondering if church is right for you or not, whether you are young or old, cool or stodgy, whether you are single, married, divorced or widowed, straight or gay or questioning, whether you have a high-powered job, are looking for work, or are trying to figure out what to do with your life, whether you are a quiet soul or part of a loud family wherever you find yourself on your journey of faith, you are very welcome at Portland Mennonite Church. Peace to you, FEBRUARY 17, :30 AM At Portland Mennonite Church we are striving to take seriously the challenge of the prophet Jeremiah to seek the peace of the city (Jeremiah 29:7). Childcare is available for children 6 months to 2 years old during Sunday school and worship, unless otherwise posted. Check in at the nursery downstairs. It is located at the end of the hallway past the bathrooms. We also have a cry room at the back of the sanctuary. Hearing Assistive Devices are available. You can pick one up at the sound booth in the back of the sanctuary or ask an usher for assistance. Large Print bulletins, flyers, and hymnals are available upon request. Please contact the church office to make arrangements. Cover Picture During the week, Sunnyside Mennonite Montessori School kids take off their coats and stay a while! What Did Jesus Look Like? Jesus was a Jewish man living in Palestine in the first century. No one knows exactly what he looked like, but certainly he had a darker complexion than the windows of our sanctuary portray. We have talked about altering or replacing these stained-glass images. But that solution has seemed too easy, as if we could simply erase the problem. Instead, each of us, and especially those of us who are white, are left to confront the reality that we easily assume Jesus looks like us and we easily assume that white is the norm. And each of us are challenged to find our places in ministries of justice and reconciliation.

5 Psalm Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. Luke 6:17-26 He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. Fair Trade Fruit/Coffee/Tea Today Fairly-traded dried fruit, coffee, cacao nibs, and teas from Colombia are available for purchase today. Look for the table in the Old Chapel after worship and after Sunday School. (Fair Trade food purchases are made possible by Linda Davies and Paula Brunk Kuhns, and supported by the Congregational Life Core Ministry Team) John Roth at PMC Feb John Roth, professor of history at Goshen College and editor of the Mennonite Quarterly Review, is coming out to Portland Mennonite on February 23 and 24. Please note that we will have only one worship service that Sunday, at 10:45 am. Come hear Roth re-narrate the unique history of Anabaptist Christians, give insight into an increasingly global Anabaptism, and show the lasting relevance of our Mennonite calling. Saturday Evening Feb 23 4:00-5:30 pm A Story Shaped People: The Burden and Gift of the Anabaptist Tradition 5:30-6:30 Break for Dinner on Hawthorne 6:30-8:00 What Hath Zurich to do with Addis Ababa?
