SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 9, :00 AM, Lead Pastor Curt Weaver, Pastor of Youth Britt Carlson, Pastor of Community Life Rachel Joy, Administrator Today is the Second Sunday of Advent, a season in which we prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ. Over these four Sundays, we will light the candles of the Advent wreath, sing songs of hope and expectation, and hear the story of God coming to us. We are glad you have joined us as we make ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus, 'born a child and yet a king.' Childcare is available for children 6 months to 2 years old during Sunday school and worship, unless otherwise posted. Check in at the nursery downstairs. It is located at the end of the hallway past the bathrooms. We also have a cry room at the back of the sanctuary. Hearing Assistive Devices are available. You can pick one up at the sound booth in the back of the sanctuary or ask an usher for assistance. PEACE CANDLE Each Sunday we light a candle as a sign of our faith in Christ, whose light shines in the darkness (John 1.5). Amidst the shadows that fall around us and in us, the gospel invites us to pray for peace. It also prompts us to act for peace, in both personal and global ways.

3 Malachi 3:1-4 See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner s fire Luke 3:1-6 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of and like fullers soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. We are proposing some bylaw changes, have several nominees for new terms on the Leadership Table, and are seeking approval for our 2019 budget, Curt s sabbatical request, and recommendation to PNMC for Brie Kruger s ordination for her pastoral work as a chaplain. Proposed bylaw changes and the current draft budget are online at: org/congregational-meeting.html (or contact the office for a paper copy). Leadership Table nominees are: Linda Smith (continuing as Faith Formation Elder), Vivian Headings (continuing as Congregational Life Elder), and Brie Kruger (Chair-Elect). We will also hear an update on the Lower Level Remodel. Table Nominees Two Services Survey This Fall, we ve been experimenting with an early service on Sunday mornings. A second service creates more space for people to join us for worship. It creates a setting for another experience of worship (e.g. the more contemplative service of Morning ). It also means that we don t all see each other in a single service and that there are shorter times for greeting people and catching up with friends between worship and Sunday School. Now that we have been at this for a few months, we re eager to hear your input. You can respond to an on-line survey at: making-room.html. Hard copies of the survey are also available in the Old Chapel (return to a basket in the PMC office). Either way, it will be most helpful to hear from everyone by the end of the month.

4 Every year as we remember the gift of Jesus birth, we celebrate with an Advent Giving Tree. This year grab a tag (or two) from the Giving Tree and participate in the kingdom of God in one of two ways: NEXT WEEK Street Roots This year half of our tags will be items that support Street Roots vendors. Street Roots mission is to create income opportunities for people experiencing homelessness and poverty by publishing a newspaper and other media that are catalysts for individual and social change. Every Sunday at PMC, you can pick up the latest Street Roots copy in the entry way from Nathan. Our Giving Tree will support the work of Street Roots with items from athletic socks to Tri-met passes. Announcements, continued The Choral Arts Ensemble Dec 8 & 9 The Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland is offering a Christmas concert on December 8th (7:30 pm) and December 9th (3:00 pm) at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church (2408 SE 16th Ave., Portland). Vancouver Master Chorale Dec 8 & 9 Jim & Mary Wenger invite you to a Christmas concert of Vancouver Master Chorale, December 8 at 7:00 PM, or December 9 at 3:00 PM, at First Presbyterian Church in Vancouver. Whiskey Hill Rd, Hubbard, OR) is hosting their annual Sing Your Own Messiah on Saturday, December 22 at 7:00pm. Come join in singing or just listen to selections from Handel's well-known oratorio. Event is free and open to the public; donations gladly accepted for paying our instrumentalists and soloists. Refreshments following. Night Strike Dec 13 / 6 pm PMC volunteers as a group at Night Strike (a homeless ministry under the Burnside bridge) on the second Thursday of each month. Fair Trade Sales at PMC Dec 15 & 16 Just Cause, a fair trade store had a successful inaugural sale at PMC last weekend. A repeat pop-up shop is scheduled for December 15 and 16. Invite your friends and neighbors to stop in on Saturday between 10:00 2:00 or on Sunday between and after services. There will be a number of new products including cards made by women who have escaped sex trafficking in the Philippines. Changing the world one transaction at a time. Dried Fruit, Tea, and Coffee from Colombia (Level Ground) will also be available on both days, sold by Portland Mennonite (thanks to Linda Davies). Coffee will be on sale to clear older inventory. Worship At PMC in the Weeks Ahead December 9, 16 / 8:30 and 11:00am We continue to experiment with two services by shifting the times back a half-hour. Through the Advent season, the early service will begin at 8:30 am and the later service will start at 11:00 (Sunday School classes will meet from 9:45 to 10:45). The two services will be largely alike, and the nursery will be open for both services. December 23, 30 / 10:30 am (no Sunday School) On these two Sundays we will have a single service at 10:30 and no Sunday School classes. Christmas Eve Dec 24 / 6:30 pm Join us on Christmas Eve, December 24, at 6:30 pm for a Service of Lessons and Carols. We will hear the story of Christ s birth and sing with the angels Glory to the newborn King! The Christmas Eve offering this year will support Mennonite Central Committee s work with refugees.
