Jesus said to him, Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. John 14:25-27 (NRSV) I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. Romans 8:14-17 (NRSV) For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Offering The blue mission envelopes in the pew should be used to contribute to Mission Offerings. From April to June, the offering goes to support Henderson Settlement. They can also be used for Habitat offerings. Please mark on the blue envelope where you would like your offering to go. 3 Habitat Interfaith Build 2016 St James has joined with 30 other Fox Valley faith communities in an event titled Interfaith Build This event is being coordinated by the Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity. The event consists of building (2) five bedroom homes on Russet Court on the West side of Appleton. Each faith community has been asked to provide volunteers to complete specific portions of the building process and to help raise funds to pay for the building materials. Thank you to all who have signed up to volunteer. We still have one date that needs filling: Aug 23 rd Tues. (2) people underlayment & stairs If you are interested in helping with the project, contact Gary Linstad or Lloyd Eggert. All workers will receive a commemorative T-Shirt. The financial goal for St. James is $ We have a jack stud that will be used to frame one of the doorways in one of the homes. Everyone is invited to be part of the project by signing the jack stud. Gary Linstad and Lloyd Eggert Worship Notes: Finance Notes Weekly budget = $2,708 5/08/16 giving = $1,434 Month to date budget = $5,416 MTD giving = $5,311 Year to date budget = $51,452 YTD giving = $51,838 Sermon Reflection: John 14:8-17, On this Pentecost Sunday, as we celebrate the birthday of the church, I want to teach you a simple and yet potentially powerful prayer. It goes like this... "Veni, Spiritus Sanctus, Veni," or as the Germans would say it, "Komm Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott." In English it is simply, "Come, Holy Spirit, come." There is no prayer in German, Greek, English, Swahilli, or Latin more powerful than this "Veni, Spiritus Sanctus, Veni." This prayer opens us to the Holy Spirit, who comes, fills, and leads our lives. For when the Holy Spirit appears, the miracle of new life, renewal, and dynamis (power) breaks loose. "Come, Holy Spirit, come!" A ship strayed off course near San Deigo some years ago. The ship got stuck in a reef at low tide. Twelve tugboats failed in their attempts to move it. Finally, the captain instructed the tugboats to leave. He decided, "I'll just be patient and wait." He waited and waited. Then high tide appeared. All of a sudden the Pacific Ocean began to rise. The rising tide lifted the ship and placed it back into the channel. What human power could not do, the rising tide of the Pacific Ocean did! Something like that happened to the early church on the Day of Pentecost! The disciples and others were all together in one place confused, unmotivated, fearful when suddenly the tide of God rolled in! Jesus' promise in John's gospel was literally fulfilled on Pentecost Day. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth... but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. John 14:16-17, 26 Today when you and I pray, "Come, Holy Spirit, come" we can expect the three P's of Pentecost to unfold: people united, power excited, and passion ignited. When we gather together, it is to gain strength for service. When we worship, it is to be challenged for witness. When we praise, it is to find renewed power. When we rejoice in fellowship, it is for the renewal of our faith. We are grateful for the spirit that prompted you to worship with us today and pray that you will join us again.

4 In-Gathering School Kits for Annual Conference Every year the Annual Conference asks each congregation be in mission through In-Gathering kits. These will be taken to Wisconsin Annual Conference in June when Larry and Pastor Mark attend to be added to other kits from around the state. This year we are assembling school kits. Here is what is needed... 3 notebooks (8x10 1/2, spiral are best) 6 pencils (#2, unsharpened no advertising) 1 pair of blunt school scissors 1 ruler (12 with 30cm metric) 1 2 1/2 eraser 1 box of 24-count Crayola Crayons 1 hand-held pencil sharpener (removed from packaging) 1 school bag (sewn) Shipping donation per bag: $1 A basket for the items can be found at the Connection Center table. A sample bag can be found there along with directions. You can also find directions on the church website, umcsj.org. If you are not handy at sewing, you can purchase a 14 X16 plain duck cloth bag at Hobby Lobby or JoAnn Fabrics. If you would prefer not to buy supplies, you can donate money and someone from the Mission Committee will buy the supplies for you. See Kay Christenson if you have any questions. Kits need to be completed no later than June 5th. It's Rummage Sale Time When you're spring cleaning your closets and garages, remember, we'll be collecting items for our 7th annual rummage sale on June 3 & 4. Feel free to take an empty box from the coat room home and fill it up with your donations. Return it to the coat room and we'll take it from there! 5 SERVICE OF CONFIRMATION INTRODUCTION TO THE SERVICE Brothers and sisters in Christ, through the sacrament of baptism we are initiated into Christ's holy church. We are incorporated into God's mighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit. All this is God's gift, offered to us without price. Through confirmation, and the reaffirmation of our faith, we renew the covenant declared at our baptism, acknowledge what God is doing for us, and affirm our commitment to Christ's holy church. PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATES I present: Aubree Bahr, Caleb Bahr, Sydney Davis, Hunter Price, and Christopher Shepard RENUNCIATION OF SIN AND PROFESSION OF FAITH The pastor addresses the confirmands, and they respond: On behalf of the whole church, I ask you, do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of your sin? Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves? Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races? According to the grace given to you, will you remain faithful members of Christ's holy church and serve as Christ's representatives in the world? I will. RECEPTION INTO THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH As members of Christ's universal church, will you be loyal to Christ through The United Methodist Church, and do all in your power to strengthen its ministries? I will. RECEPTION INTO THE LOCAL CONGREGATION As members of this congregation, will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service and your witness? We will. The pastor addresses the congregation, and the congregation responds: Do you, as Christ's body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ? We do. Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include these persons now before you in your care? With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround these persons with a community of love and forgiveness, that they may grow in their trust of God, and be found faithful in their service to others. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; on the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Confirmands share their Credo Statements CONFIRMATION OF FAITH May the Holy Spirit work within you, that having been born through water and the Spirit, you may live as a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. Amen.
