1 The mission of St. Paul s United Methodist Church is to Teach, Share, and Witness the Love of Jesus Christ Scholarships Awarded Congratulations to the following students recipients of a St. Paul s Scholarship for the fall semester: Hillary Braynov: Attending Butler County Community College with an educational goal of Audiologist. Daniel Gilchrist: Attending Wichita State University with an educational goal of Bachelor s of Science in Electrical Engineering with Minor in Mathematics. Thomas Nguyen: Attending De Anza Community College in Cupertino, California with an educational goal to obtain a Business Degree. Tanya Simpson: Attending Butler County Community College with an educational goal of a Degree in Social Work with an emphasis in Abnormal Psychology. Libby Willis: Attending Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas with an education goal to obtain a Bachelors Degree in Social Work. 2 C.S. Lewis said, There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, Thy will be done, and those to whom God says, All right, then, have it your way. As redeemed children of God, of course, we desire to belong to that first category, Thy will be done. For the three Sundays in September, the 14, 21, and 28, we have been in the midst of our stewardship campaign. The theme of our worship services has been Fulfilling God s Purpose! We have learned how the Holy Spirit, working through Word and Sacrament, transforms us to be more like our Chief Steward, Jesus, who willingly poured out his life in giving and serving, ultimately sacrificing his very life for our eternal lives. As your pastor, I pray that each of you have and will take advantage of these opportunities to grow in the grace and knowledge of your Lord that you might be strengthened in faith both for eternity and for a fruitful life here on earth. We have looked at the first three themes of our campaign, Sunday September 14, Building Relationships Sunday September 21, Witnessing for Jesus Sunday September 28, Living as a Servant Our final and commitment Sunday will be the first Sunday in October, Sunday October 5, Giving Joyfully and Generously Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). Grace and Peace, Pastor Jeff and Beth Missions and Ministries (M&Ms), Apportionments, Mission Shares They all mean the same thing. This is a total that each United Methodist Church is expected to give to the general conference and to the overall United Methodist Church so that we can continue ministry in our conference and throughout the world. There is a very complicated formula that even most pastors struggle to understand completely but it is giving by the local church on an annual basis so that we can help continue the vision of making disciples for Jesus Christ and the transformation of the world. Some of the areas of ministry that our Mission Share helps to pay are The Episcopal Office (our Bishop), Clergy Excellence (Which provides trainings for pastors in the conference), Congregational Excellence (providing programs to help the local congregations grow in their faith and outreach), Mercy and Justice, and Administrative Services. 4 I would like to thank the congregation of St. Paul s for the scholarship and for their support during the past year. This scholarship helps me with the cost of my books each year. Tanya Simpson St. Paul s Ongoing Mission Oppor tunities There are several ways that you can contribute to the missions of St. Paul s: Dillons Reloadable Cards: Cards can be purchased from the church office for $5 each (They have been pre-loaded with $5). Take the card to Dillons and have any amount you wish up to $500 loaded onto them. St. Paul s receives 5% from all sales. Proceeds from the cards go toward the Parish Nursing Program of St. Paul s, Missions and Ministry and to St. Paul s budget. Thank you to those that have faithfully continue to load and use their cards. Brown Bag Mission Project: With your donation of $5 for each bag, a bag is given to someone in need of a meal. The cost of the bag is around $2 with the remaining $3 given to Missions and Ministry. To date you have sponsored over 165 meals. Box Tops for Education & Cambell Soup Labels: This is a mission projects that have been going for many many years. The Box Tops and Labels are picked up by former St. Paul s pastor, Chuck Chipman. He trims, bundles and then they are mailed to McCurdy School in Espanola, NM. Pecans: The pecan ministry was started many years ago by deceased member, Donald Kinkead. The purpose was to help pay St. Paul s portion of Missions and Ministry (Apportionments) to the Conference. He worked many hours and spent many evenings and weekends promoting and selling pecans. Upon his death we continued to sell pecans from the office, with all proceeds to go toward Missions and Ministry. At the Administrative Board meeting on September 10, it was voted that the Chancel Choir would take over the sell of pecans and all proceeds will be used to fund their expenses for music. A new crop of pecans will be available soon. Look for more information in the bulletin as to when and as to the cost. MANA Jar: We ask that you please drop your spare change each week into the MANA (Mission And Neighbors Assistance) Jar. The collection in the jar will be divided equally between Mission and Ministry and a Pastor s Discretionary Fund to assist members in need. Page 4

5 From the Help! I m Afraid! We all deal with fear. Sometimes it's just a small annoying fear. We're moving along through the day and we're afraid we won't make it on time to an important meeting. Sometimes we have a moment of fear if we're suddenly expected to say something in a conversation but have not had time to think first about what we might say or how we might say it. Sometimes fear seems chronic - a rather unwelcome constant companion - we fear we won't have enough money, we'll grow old and die alone, we won't survive our terrible illness, we won't be able to see our children grow up, we won't be able to manage all our responsibilities, we won't measure up, we won't complete goals we've set for ourselves, our plane will crash, we'll have that horrible dream again. We usually try to tell ourselves that there's nothing to be afraid of, or we try to act courageous while we're shaking inside. The next time you feel afraid try these four things: First, sit down and breathe. Even count your breaths. As you breathe in, breathe in calmness. As you breathe out, breathe out the fear. Breathe at least 5 full breaths. Breathing is usually shorter when we're afraid because our bodies have a physiological response to fear that speeds up and shortens our breath. Five full deep breaths can help you feel not only more calm, but more courageous. Second, take a step. It may be a physical step that helps break the pattern fear has put upon you. It may be a mental step that takes you closer toward the fear. As long as there is movement, there is less chance for fear to cause you to feel paralyzed. Third, close your eyes and imagine the fear as a mist over the ocean. Look for the beauty in the mist, feel it's moisture, give thanks for its mystery, try to let yourself become 'one' with it. Fear can actually lead us to greater strength when we encounter it with curiosity. Finally, affirm your eternal nature. Nothing can or will happen to you that can destroy your eternal worth or the eternal love with which you are held in the universe. Fear can never, ever have that kind of power. 6 Spiritual Nur turing and Evangelism The Spiritual Nurturing and Evangelism Committee met on September 9 with 4 in attendance. Several ideas were discussed on how to help those in need during the Christmas Season. In the end it was decided that each would encourage all members to give as much as they could toward the doorbell ministry and bring food for the food pantry. It is something that is needed each week and will be more so during the Christmas Season. During the month of October, St. Paul s will focus on collecting canned vegetables for the food pantry at UM Open Doors. We will continue to collect peanut butter, canned meat, boxes macaroni and cheese, low sugar cereal/oatmeal and shelf stable milk. Please bring your donations to the church and we will see that it is taken to UM Open Doors.
