February December From the Pastor: Unstoppable Love As a pastor, one part of the witness I am called to that I feel very passionate about is sharing and rejoicing in the character of our God. As a Christian I also feel strongly about uplifting how the character of God is best revealed through Jesus Christ, and yet in Christ the former God is not negated but rather fulfilled. My passion to speak to this point comes out of observations that certain Christian circles tend to callously disregard the God of the Old Testament in favor of the Jesus of the New Testament. Yet, knowing the God of the Old Testament can better shed light on God in Christ. Yes, the Old Testament holds story after story of God s incredible mercy and how God continually sought to reach out to God s people and figure out how to overcome humanity s sinfulness. This Lent we will be focusing on this part of God s journey. Sundays through Lent will focus on the readings from the Old Testament that witness to how God continues to persevere despite the people s unfaithfulness and sinfulness and ultimately how God s love has always been unstoppable. God is a covenantal God, from the unconditional promise to Noah to never flood the earth again, to the promises to father Abraham, to the gift of the law to help live in relationship faithfully to God and neighbor, to God s continual problem-solving to find a way to save the people who perpetually get into trouble, to finally declaring a new covenant to be written not on stone tablets but on the people s hearts. God s journey is one of unending and unconditional movement toward God s people in love. Then the proclamation of Easter is that through Christ, God finally found the way to overcome all obstacles so that love might prevail. We invite you to worship with us this Lenten season beginning with Ash Wednesday on February 18 either at noon or 7:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday is a beautiful service to remind us of our humble beginnings and the gracious God who will carry us through eternity. Sundays in Lent will focus on the Old Testament readings with beautiful worship elements to help immerse us in God s unstoppable love. On Wednesdays in Lent, we will offer a Lenten Lunch at noon with Bible studies focusing on the Sunday gospel texts. Holy Week will feature first communion for our 5 th graders at the Maundy Thursday service on April 2, a meal through which we get to taste God s unstoppable love. Journey with us this Lent as we discover the depth of God s promises and how truly nothing can separate us from the love of God, neither life nor death, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything in all creation can separate us from the Love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. God s love is simply unstoppable. - Pastor Marie Purcell

We are in the season after Epiphany, and this liturgical season is all about how we learn to follow the Christ Child. As we see the glory of our God revealed in the life of Jesus, we are called to discipleship and service. As Jesus shares the love of God with us, he asks us to follow him and do the same. This Epiphany season at Christ Lutheran we will focus on concrete ways we can live out Jesus call to come and follow. We will present on a cause each Sunday, either through the Children's Sermon or a Temple Talk, and then challenge the congregation to work on supporting that particular cause/organization. Here is the list of causes and challenges for the remaining Sundays in Epiphany: February 1 - Souper Bowl of Caring Donate to the Junior High youth offering for Souper Bowl Sunday. Volunteer at an organization in our community seeking to fight hunger, such as Agape, the SA Food Bank or CAM. Collect cans of soup throughout the week and bring them back to church on Sunday, and we will donate them to our local food pantry. February 8 - God's Global Barnyard (an ELCA program that buys pigs, chicks, cows and other animals for families to help them toward sustainability) Pick up Buck-a-Chick coloring sheets in the narthex to take and share with neighbors, classmates, co-workers, etc. Sheets are sold for a $1 donation to purchase chicks through God s Global Barnyard. Sheets may be returned to church and will be displayed in the CrossWay. Here is an address for the sheets if you want to print them at home: download.elca.org/elca%20resource%20repository/ Buck_A_Chick.pdf Donate to the Sunday School offering to buy pigs through God's Global Barnyard. Mark your check and a pew envelope with the designation pigs. February 15 - Bread for the World Write a letter to Congress urging our nation s decision-makers to end hunger at home and abroad. Go to and consider how you can get more involved. We certainly do not expect everyone to do every single challenge. These are simply starting points to encourage us to consider what it means that we are called to follow. But even if each of us does a few of them, think what an impact we will make collectively as a community of faith this Epiphany season! Page 2

3 Faith University: Sunday Mornings Faith University continues with the Pastors class on the prophets for the first three Sundays, followed by Prof. Carl Hughes class on The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James Cone, which will run through Lent. Professor Hughes joined the TLU faculty in Fall He holds degrees from St. Olaf, Emory and Harvard. His primary teaching areas are historical theology and the history of Christianity. We are very blessed that he is also a member of Christ Lutheran! Read more on his class below. James Cone's The Cross and the Lynching Tree with Dr. Carl Hughes What does the Roman crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth mean for Christians today? How should this event shape how we as Christians see the world, our society, our history, and our callings? Member News Births Elliott Taylor Schwartz born on January 10. Proud grandparents are Steve & Hollye Schwartz. Sympathy to: Elizabeth Chavers on the death of her mother, Dora Aguilar. Sandy Roe on the death of her mother, Marguerite Forehand. Cone is known as "the father of Black Theology" and is an eminent theologian at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. In this text, which was named one of the Top Religion Books of 2011 by the Huffington Post and which has been praised by Bill Moyers, Henry Louis Gates, and many others, Cone meditates on the tragedy of the cross in relation to the sordid history of American lynching in the first half of the twentieth century. By doing so, he asks Christians to ponder where the crucifixion of Jesus intersects with our world today. The book is beautifully written and draws on African-American art, music and literature as prophetic forces that can renew the church. The class will take the form of reading and discussion over the six Sundays in Lent. Participants will be encouraged to read through the book according to a schedule provided. For the first meeting on February 22, participants are asked to read pages xiiixix. However, all are welcome to attend each week, whether you've had the chance to read or not. Come for thought-provoking conversations about a new perspective on the cross during this season of Lent. Books are available for sale through the church office. office@clcah.org to reserve your copy. The cost is $20. Many thanks to Prof. Hughes for teaching this Lenten season. Please sign up in the CrossWay if you re planning to attend. The Prophets are People In today s world, anything edgy is likely to be deemed prophetic, particularly if it is not within the realm of religion, religious persuasion and the Bible. Any prophet who dares to claim religious authority or cites scripture is suspect at the very least and more likely categorized as outright crazy. So what can we learn from these ancient followers of God who bravely spoke out on God s behalf? What was their motivation? What was their message? How did they perceive this God that they served and what was that relationship like? And how do we carry on their legacy, transforming ourselves into prophets for today? February 1: Witnessing in the Midst of Disaster - The Prophet Jeremiah February 8: Good and Faithful Servant - The Prophet Isaiah February 15: Prophecy as Risk, Challenge & Gift Praises To Our Director of Music, Daniel Long, for presenting a Magical Mystery Tour of the Theology of the Beatles in December and January. Mary Overstreet and the Sunday school kids for creating the wonderful Sanctuary banners for our Called to Follow theme. All who helped unhang the decorations in the Sanctuary and to Edna Robbins and Carolyn Dufelmeier for their organizational skills. The women who met with Pastor Marie to help plan the Women s Retreat. Jim Vasquez for donating the new lights for the sanctuary. Page 3

4 Faith University: Night School Jesus question to Peter is also his question to us, Who do you say that I am? This year in Faith University Night School we are reading two books in conversation with each other over one of the greatest questions of our faith. This February we continue reading through Bart Ehrman s book, How Jesus Became God, and the response to it by several scholars, How God Became Jesus. Meet in the parlor on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:15 p.m. Ash Wednesday, Lenten Lunches & Bible Study Come fill up, nourished by the Word and Rosario s delicious cooking, on Wednesdays throughout Lent! We meet at noon in Fellowship Hall for a Bible Study led by our pastors focusing on the gospel for the upcoming Sunday and for a meal as well. It should be wonderful learning and fellowship as we continue to reflect on God s unstoppable love for us as revealed in the gospels. Join us February 18, Ash Wednesday for worship followed by lunch. The following Wednesday we will begin lunches and Bible Study, meeting on February 25, March 4, 11, 18, and 25. Life After Loss Life After Loss is a six-week program to help people better understand the process of grief and how to live through it in a way that is healing. It provides a place to share experiences and support one another. Each session is a combination of teaching, discussion and learning activities. The sessions cover the physical, emotional, spiritual and social implications of grief, the process of grief, memories and how to use them to heal, how to take care of yourself while you grieve, holidays and anniversary dates and planning for the future. The sessions are open to those who have experienced the loss of a loved one and there is no charge for the program. Attending all six sessions is most beneficial; therefore no new participants are accepted after the second session. Life after Loss will be offered at Christ Lutheran in the Parlor on Tuesdays from 11:30-1:00 p.m. beginning February 3 and continuing on February 10, 17, 24, March 3, and 10. Facilitators will be Chaplain Darwin Huartson and Pastor Marie Purcell. RSVP to Christ Lutheran Church, office@clcah.org, Page 4

5 Couples Night Out Friday, February 6, 6:00-9:00 p.m., Fellowship Hall Come with your valentine for an evening of fun fellowship over dinner with couples of all ages. Hosted by Marie & David Purcell, Lisa & Joe Diana and Edna & Les Robbins three couples at different stages of married life. The event is free; a donation will be appreciated to help cover the cost of the meal. Cocktails will be served starting at 6:00 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The entertainment portion of the evening, including guided conversation prompts, comedy and song will follow dinner. RSVP to the church office by Monday, February 2, Meals on Wheels Save the Date: On March 1 after worship there will be an important meeting about Meals on Wheels at CLC. We are delighted that we have had the blessing of Kim Wheeless leading this vital ministry for our church for almost 30 years! Now, the time has come for her to step down from that leadership role and let someone else take the reins... or should we say wheel? In deep sincerity, we thank Kim for her many years of humble service. Thousands upon thousands of meals have been delivered as a result of her service! So... part of honoring her long dedication of this ministry is making sure it continues and that there is a smooth transition process. Please join us in Fellowship Hall after the 10:30 a.m. service on March 1 to discuss plans for CLC s future with Meals on Wheels and to thank Kim for her ministry these many years. Also, be sure to thank all of our dedicated Meals on Wheels drivers for their commitment to this incredible program. Lucy Circle: February 15 Lucy Circle meets in the Parlor at 9:15 a.m. on third Sundays. On February 15, Edna Robbins will lead the discussion on the essay, Some Notes on Attunement, by Zadie Smith. The Lucies continue to discuss essays from The Best American Essays 2013, edited by Cheryl Strayed. The essays cover a wide range of topics that evoke discussion about love, faith, compassion, family, service, community, illness, regret, fear, death, war and other compelling human conditions. We invite Christ Lutheran women to join us. If you need a copy of the book, you can find it at amazon.com. Page 5

6 Youth & Children Note from Carrie I can't believe we are in 2015! The month of January was filled with fun activities for all ages, and February is packed with even more, so please bring out your calendars and start saving the dates. Our Senior High group met last month to discuss programming for the spring. We plan on doing more community service as a group over the next several months so please attend to learn how you can help our community. We still have space for the Youth Gathering, so if you are interested, let us know. Spaces are filing up quickly. Our Junior High group had a great January. They continue to assist in worship and attended a Large Group Confirmation class with Pastor Leslie. They are really digging into their Lutheran faith. We had a church lock-in that was so much fun, they are already asking for another one! Our children continue to explore the stories of our faith through Godly Play and they participate in worship through singing in the Jubilate Choir. We have several Stepping Stones to celebrate over the next few months so please mark your calendars. Please remember my door is always open for ideas and exploring new ways to teach our children! I love visiting with our families and church members to hear about the vision they have for their children here at CLC. Here's to an awesome February! Peace, Carrie Jowers, Director of Faith Formation Senior High Youth Ministry The Senior High is learning about the needs in the San Antonio area. I'm so proud of their hard work and dedication to helping others. What's coming up: The Senior High Youth gathered to plan spring activities and came up with these events: February 14: Street to Feet Walk/Run: 8:00 a.m. 404 North Alamo SAMM Ministries. The Youth Gathering is scheduled for July in Detroit and is going to be here before you know it so please let us know if you are interested. For more details on registration, contact Carrie Jowers at the church office. Page 6

8 Youth & Children God's Global Barnyard: February 8 As many of you know, the children have been collecting money to buy pigs with their offering this year! We even have Willie the pig collecting our money every Sunday during Sunday School. The children are very excited to be able to help out others in need. We will have children's time to talk about the Global Barnyard Campaign on Sunday, February 8 at the 10:30 a.m. worship hour. Stepping Stones Learning to Worship: 4 th & 5 th Grade On Sunday, February 22 we will celebrate the Stepping Stone, Learning to Worship, with our 4th through 5th graders during the Sunday School hour (parents are invited to attend). We will meet in the Children's Chapel. Learning to Worship takes place at this age because children may be curious about why we worship the way we do. Since worship is an integral part of our Christian life, it is with joy that we teach our children about the importance and significance of the different elements of our Lutheran worship service. During this Stepping Stone, parents and children will take a "walk" through the red hymnals that we use every Sunday, learning more about the hymns and its other rich resources. Exploring our hymnal helps us to understand all the parts of worship, and can enhance worship for us on Sunday morning. The gift for this Stepping Stone is one for the whole family: a hymnal to use at home to sing the songs of our faith. A hymnal will be gifted to the whole family when the eldest child gets to 4th grade and attends the Learning to Worship class with their parents. We hope our 4th through 5th graders and their families can participate in this event! My Church: 1 st and 2 nd Grade Also on Sunday, February 22, there will be a class during the 9:15 a.m. Sunday School hour for our 1st through 3rd graders entitled My Church. This class is a wonderful opportunity for the children to explore and learn about our worship space. One of the things we like to stress at Christ Lutheran is that when we talk about the Church and the Church s work, we are talking about the community of people that gather together and not simply the building in which we gather. However, the space in which we gather is still important to us. We gather in a space that often looks different from the rest of the world, and for children our worship space can be full of wonder and mysteries. The My Church Stepping Stone shares with children what makes our worship space special. Vacation Bible School Save the Date August 10-14! More information will be coming soon. Page 8

Camp Chrysalis Overnight Camp at Chrysalis will take place the week of July 26 through 31. Overnight camp helps our kids form healthy images of God and themselves and helps them build strong friendships. It is a great experience for our kids to have a great time and to grow in their faith! Music Week 2015 CLC s young singers, their parents and fans are still buzzing about Music Week 2014: Oh Jonah! As people of faith, we trust that we have a God who also chooses to begin with unconditional love as the foundation to relationship. At our gathering on Tuesday, February 17, we will discuss chapters 2, 3 and 4 about the first 3 of the 5 languages: Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation and Quality Time. Even if you weren t able to come in January you are welcome to join at any time. You can pick this book up at most bookstores, on Amazon and Kindle. 11 Young Women s Group Labyrinth Field Trip RESCHEDULED! Saturday, February 21, 10:00 a.m. January s planned Labyrinth Walk ended up cold and rainy, so we decided to postpone the event in hopes of better weather. Please join us for a Labyrinth Field Trip and Brunch on Saturday, February 21 at 10:00 a.m. After talking about different forms of prayer and spirituality at one of our fall gatherings we decided it would be special to walk a labyrinth together. Labyrinths offer paths to renewal, as they have for centuries. Combining the imagery of the circle and the spirit into a meandering but purposeful path, labyrinths represent a journey to our own center and back out again into the world. There is a beautiful walking Labyrinth at the Episcopal Church of Reconciliation. Let s meet there at 10:00 a.m. to walk the Labyrinth; then we ll go out for brunch nearby at Mama s Café. Episcopal Church of Reconciliation: 8900 Starcrest Dr. The church is at the intersection of Starcrest and Barrington. Park in the back parking lot, which is off of Barrington, close to the Labyrinth. You can see it from the street and lot. Mama s Café: 2442 Nacogdoches Rd., south on Starcrest from the Labyrinth. Take a right on the 410 access road, then take another right on Nacogdoches! So easy! Please join us! "Fill Your Cup" This small group Bible study for women meets every other Friday from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at Lisa Diana's home, 114 Laburnum Dr. Our current study, "Listening for the Voice of God" by Margaret Feinberg, teaches us how to slow down, wait on God, and hear his voice through all the clutter of life. In doing so, we can walk with peace and confidence down the path God has set for us. Please contact Lisa Diana at or jnldiana@att.net if you are interested in joining us. We'd love to have you attend our meetings this month on Fridays, February 13 and 27. CLC Book Club You re invited to join the CLC Book Club (all are welcome!) on Tuesday, February 3 to discuss Killing Floor by Lee Child. Edna Robbins will lead the discussion. We will meet at 6:45 p.m. at Primrose House. Page 11

12 Cigars Under the Stars The Christ Lutheran Annual Men s Big Bend Expedition is scheduled for February 26 through March 1. The trip consists of hiking, fellowship, campfires and enjoying God s great creation at Big Bend. We leave the church parking lot by car caravan on Thursday morning, February 26 and return Sunday, March 1. We stay in casitas in Terlingua. Our former pastor, Steve Rode, who is a member of Friends of Big Bend, leads us on these trips and provides local knowledge and fascinating insights into the area. Camaraderie, food, drink and fireside chats are plentiful. This is our twelfth year and we haven t been thrown in jail yet. All Christ Lutheran men are invited, but you need to let us know soon so we can make sure you have a place to sleep and a way to get out there. We have confirmations from eight fearless men so far. Please contact either Lewis Westerman ( ) or Bob Oliver ( ) if you are interested in joining us. H4H 70-in-7 Update Thanks to all for your continuing prayers and support for our friend Brenda and her four young children. Life is a struggle as they strive for independence, but it s a struggle Brenda is accepting with courage and faith. She still needs a stand to safely hold a small TV for the protection of the children. If anyone has something that would work and you can part with it, please call Lisa Diana at Our team is working with Brenda to help her set up a budget and aim for financial stability. Please continue your prayers for peace and healing for this dear family. And in ongoing needs, we also like to occasionally give Brenda a gift card to Wal-Mart or H-E-B to help her provide for her family. Many thanks! - Jan Norris Page 12
