Through God s Grace All are welcome as we joyfully, Receive to Give Learn to Serve and Worship to Grow. September December I don t know about you, but I love the smell of newly sharpened pencils, the sound of staples going into a bulletin board, and the feel of a freshly printed syllabus in my hands, laying out the guide for a semester s worth of learning. Ok, so I ll admit it... I m obviously a nerd or I had a mother who was a teacher... or both. But in all seriousness, part of what makes a fresh syllabus so delightful is that it is full of promise. It signals a new start. No points have been lost. No mistakes have been made. A new syllabus hearkens to our potential, helping us to imagine that the sky is the limit. This seems to me not too far off from our Lutheran understanding of grace. Through our sins, we have all fallen short. We all have faced disappointments, but time and again God forgives us and reclaims us and tells us to start over or to pick ourselves up and keep going. Of course, theologically speaking, we don t have to wait for the start of the school year for this to happen. It can happen in each and every moment of each and every day. That s how expansive God s grace is. But we can also take comfort in the rhythms of the year and the rhyme they provide our lives. The relaxation of summer has ended, but I can t help but be excited to get back in the swing of things, knowing that doing so means we are tapping into a bright future of unlimited potential thanks to the unconditional love of God. Our fall schedule at Christ Lutheran is full of things to get excited about, too. Look for education opportunities, music ministries, small group launches, and more! You can read about it in this issue of The Proclaimer, and it all kicks off on Sunday, September 11. Rally Day Fun for All Ages To kick it all off, we invite you to join us for a special Rally Day Sunday on September 11. We are back to two services that Sunday at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. We ll have fun and intriguing learning for our children, youth, and adults from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. as Sunday School begins for the year, a special Children's Time during 10:30 a.m. worship, and our annual Rally Day Church Picnic in the Courtyard and Fellowship Hall for all ages, beginning around 11:45 a.m. Please bring a friend to join in the festivities. Traditional Church Picnic At the picnic, our resident party planner, Elizabeth Diggs, is planning a feast of delicious food and treats. Games and activities for children will abound, and we have invited (Continued on the top of page 2)

I want to start by saying thank you to the members of our congregation for supporting me in my new role as the president of our congregation. It is a post that I definitely do not take lightly, and I will do my best to live up to the trust that everyone has put in me to serve in this capacity. Many of you have reached out to me directly to thank me and offer your support and congratulations, which I appreciate. Lastly, I want to thank Brad Wheeless for his service during the past four years as president and for his help in getting me ready for this transition. He provided great leadership and created support systems to set us up for the future needs of the church. I take the reins with a good system in place. Christ Lutheran Church is a strong church with longstanding traditions but also with the ability to adapt to our changing world. I have been witness to some of these major changes and processes at Christ Lutheran. The last time I served as a council member, within a couple of months of being elected, a major announcement was made: Pastor Steve Rode decided to seek a new role in his life and for the first time in 27 years, Christ Lutheran was about to embark on a search for a new senior pastor. Having grown up in a large Lutheran church in Lincoln, Nebraska, I experienced a couple of changes in pastoral leadership, and so I knew well what we were about to experience. As most of us know, our search process lasted for roughly two years while we operated with an interim pastor who definitely served us well, but also put our congregation in a situation where we all took a much stronger participation and leadership role both in the everyday church functions and in the outreach and liturgical areas. Through that search process, this traditional congregation selected and called a woman pastor who was all of 32 years of age. We have reaped the benefit of that selection as Pastor Leslie has been instrumental in helping us grow and refocus us in ways to be relevant to our congregation and in our outreach to our community and attractiveness to new members. So why the quick history lesson? First because just like last time I served on this council, we had a pastor resign when Pastor Marie decided to return to graduate school. One of the decisions we must consider is whether we need to add a second pastor to our staff or if there are other methods we can use to support Pastor Leslie in her work. For now the direction Pastor Leslie has proposed, and we, as a Parish Council, are supporting, is to see how we function as a single pastor church. This approach means that each of us needs to (Continued on the top of page 3) Page 2

3 President (continued from page 2) see what we can do to support our congregation, just as we did when we were operating under our interim pastor. Clearly Pastor Leslie will serve as our spiritual leader, but allowing her to focus on those tasks means we may need to take on more of the administrative roles that our pastors also perform. There are no specific tasks that have been set out as yet, but if you are approached about giving more of your time and efforts to help us run our church efficiently, I hope you will seriously consider what is asked of you. The other initial big issue we will be considering in the next few months is the church constitution. A Constitutional Team has been in place for several months and has reviewed the model constitution that the ELCA crafted and disseminated to all churches for consideration and adoption. The team has nearly finished its recommendations on the constitution draft that will be presented to our congregation for consideration and possible adoption. For those of you who are not aware, in my day job I am an attorney who provides legal counsel to school districts all over the state. In that role, I spend time with school boards and help them with policies that govern how they operate. I was not part of the Constitution Team; however, I have reviewed the draft constitution that has been developed. I also am familiar with our current constitution and bylaws because they were the only documents we had to guide us when Pastor Steve retired, and we needed to start a search. So with all that said, here is my take on the new constitution: yeah!! The new constitution clearly was created by a bunch of attorneys within the ELCA, and there are provisions within it that deal directly with how a local church must act to separate itself from the ELCA. I do not believe those steps are unnecessarily cumbersome, and I believe they protect the integrity of the ELCA as well as our local congregation. What much of the new constitution provides though are parameters for how a congregation should generally function and how we are to proceed when a pastoral call becomes necessary. Having gone through that process under the old constitution, these provisions are absolutely a step in the right direction to help a congregation deal with what is already a highly stressful process. The Constitution Committee and the Parish Council (if adopted moving forward it will be called the Congregational Council) will be presenting the final draft of the proposed constitution for congregational review and possible adoption in the next months. I do endorse the adoption of the new constitution to comply with the ELCA s expectations as well as provide our church a document that aids our functions as well. Hope Bible Study Group Hope Bible Study Group will meet on Thursday, September 8th at 9:30am in the Primrose House. Pastor Leslie will be our Bible Study leader and Frances Ware is the hostess. 4 Small Group Ministry Sunday! It s time for another year of wonderful fellowship and ministry in the form of all the amazing small groups we have at Christ Lutheran! On Sunday, September 18, we will celebrate the small groups within our faith community all of which seek to care, pray, engage, and serve for the sake of growing together spiritually to become a dwelling place for God. Our NEW small group ministry brochure will be unveiled on Sunday, September 18, and all members of Christ Lutheran will be encouraged to consider where they might want to be involved. Our small groups range in focus, including: Bible studies, service groups, worship-oriented groups, fellowship, and special interest groups. The brochure also highlights our many wonderful music ministries in which members are invited to participate. We currently have almost 50 groups, but if there is something you re interested in that you can t find, please chat with Pastor Leslie about starting up a new group. To get in the Small Group Ministries brochure, please talk to Pastor Leslie by Sunday, September 4. Also, for small group leaders: please consider signing up to have a booth (part of a table) in the CrossWay throughout the morning of Sunday, September 18, to introduce yourself to potential new members and tell them more about your group. To sign up for booth space, Pastor Leslie or call the church office by Monday, September 4. Faith University: Sunday Mornings September How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian This intriguing title of John Dominic Crossan s latest book hints at the tension we often find when delving into scripture: how can the God of love we confess sometimes seem to promote and justify violence throughout the Bible? How do we reconcile the events of Revelation with Jesus call to nonviolence? How do we legitimately pray for a world of peace when our scriptures contain scenes of death and destruction that haunt us? Join Pastor Leslie for what promises to be a lively conversation around the ultimate question: is God violent? Here s a glimpse of the complete fall schedule for Faith University: Sunday Mornings: September 11, 18, 25: How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian with Pastor Leslie October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30: Dr. Carl Hughes of Texas Lutheran returns to Faith U with a class on Galatians November 6: All Saints Intergenerational Activity November 13: Stewardship Sunday Service Event November 20, December 4 & 11: Dr. Dan Long returns to Faith U teaching on African-American Spirituals December 18: Christmas Cookie Exchange Note: Faith University Night School will be on break until the spring semester. 5 Parenting Preschoolers Faithfully Parenting Preschoolers Faithfully is back! All parents of preschoolers are invited to join Pastor Leslie and Day School Director, Marilyn Hamilton, once a month during the school year for a time of fellowship and learning. The hope of Parenting Preschoolers Faithfully is to provide a space where parents can nurture their own faith as a way to better enable them to nurture their child s faith. This fall we will meet mostly on the second Tuesdays of each month at 9:15 a.m. (or after Day School chapel) in the Parlor. Our study this year will be based on Lisa J. Miller s, The Spiritual Child: The New Science on Parenting for Health and Lifelong Thriving. Our dates for fall: Tuesday, September 13 Tuesday, October 11 Tuesday, November 15 Tuesday, December 13 Sunday School for Parents Kicks Off on Rally Day! Beginning Sunday, September 11, at 9:15 a.m., we invite all our parents to head over to Primrose House after dropping off your youngsters at Sunday School. There you will find a cozy and welcoming space and time for conversation with one another. Conversations range from current events in our personal lives to current events in the news, but always with a particular focus on what it s like to be a parent in today s world and how we can best mentor our children. This year, Sunday School for Parents will be led by its faithful participants. There are still slots available to lead. If you would like to sign up to lead a month or even one Sunday, please talk to Pastor Leslie. Please note, nursery is also provided during the education hour for children not old enough for Sunday School. Lucy Circle Returneth! Lucy Circle begins a new semester on Sunday, September 18 at 9:15 a.m. in the Parlor. We invite CLC women and visitors to join us for this informal reading/discussion/fellowship group. Our reading selections are from Contemporary Latin American Short Stories, edited by Pat McNees. We will begin with the first story, Midnight Mass by Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. 6 Youth & Children Noah's Ark: VBS 2016! We certainly had a full ark this year as we welcomed over 100 children to CLC for Vacation Bible School the week of August 1. We had vibrant openings and closings, Bible studies for all ages, delicious snacks, and of course, beloved gaga ball. To keep up with all those youngsters, we enlisted the help of over 20 volunteers to guide our day. We are incredibly grateful for their time and dedication to make this an amazing week. We couldn't make VBS happen without our volunteers. Thanks to all of them, and a huge thank you to Elizabeth Diggs for turning CLC into Noah's Ark. It was beautiful, complete with a rainbow-strewn hallway, a plank walkway into the sanctuary, and a gigantic ark! The children and volunteers also collected an offering for Lifestraws, learning how the children in Africa need clean water in their communities and how we can help. Each morning during celebration time, we collected money for this important ministry impacting the children of Africa. For every $10.00 collected, a person in Africa is given a Lifestraw, which gives them the ability to produce clean water for an entire year. The children collected a total of $ for Lifestraws! We also collected socks for Blood and Fire Ministries, which were handed out at the shoe fair for inner city children on Saturday, August 13. We collected 200 pairs of socks the week of VBS! Way to go guys! We hope to see all our friends again next year! Confirmation Class: (6 th through 8 th grade) Through our Confirmation program, we seek to encourage, inspire, and nurture students as they experience God's baptismal promises, grow in their faith and understanding, and discover what it means to be God's people in the world today. We will tackle the stuff that defines our religion, such as the Bible, theology, and the Small Catechism. Most importantly, we learn about the grace and love of God. On four select Wednesday evenings (6:00-8:00 p.m.) throughout the year, we spend time in a large group hearing interactive presentations by Pastor Leslie that cover the upcoming topics for the next several weeks. The remainder of our time together happens on Sunday mornings (9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.), where students gather in small groups led by Lori Harris and Jeff Jowers to talk more in-depth about the topics covered in large group and how they might apply this learning to their lives. Our first Wednesday large group of the year will be September 7 and will also serve as our required ORIENTATION for the year. We invite all parents and students (6 th -8 th grade) to arrive at Fellowship Hall for orientation at 5:30 p.m., followed by our first large group class, which will run from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Pizza will be provided for all at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday mornings, students will meet in their classrooms (rooms #214 & 216), located upstairs. The first required Sunday School Confirmation class will be on Rally Day, September 11! We can't wait to see you for an exciting year! Page 6

7 Sunday School starts on Sunday, September 11! Youth & Children Preschool and elementary will start their morning every Sunday in their Sunday School classrooms starting at 9:15 a.m. Preschool children will be using the Godly Play curriculum and the elementary children will be using the Holy Moly! curriculum from Spark. What is Godly Play? Children have an innate sense of the presence of God. The Godly Play approach helps them to explore their faith through story, to gain religious language, and to enhance their spiritual experience though wonder and play. Based on Montessori principles and developed using a spiral curriculum, the Godly Play method serves children through early, middle, and late childhood and beyond. Come join us on Sunday mornings in the Godly Play room (3 year olds through kindergarten)! What is Holy Moly!? The Holy Moly! curriculum develops a biblical imagination that lasts a lifetime. With a combination of animated video, creative activities, and age-appropriate learning, Holy Moly! brings the Bible to life! Every lesson follows a four-part sequence: Discover, Relate, Connect, and Create. Each week, kids watch an animated Bible Story video, discuss the story, read the story for themselves, and try a creative activity to finish up the morning. Sunday School classrooms for preschool and elementary children are located on the 2nd floor. Classes will be divided into three different age groups: 3 year olds though kinder, 1 st and 2 nd grade, and 3 rd through 5 th grade. Sunday School Schedule for Ages 3 through 5 th grade: 9:15 a.m.: Children arrive to their classrooms and begin class (Please don t be late!). 10:15 a.m.: Parents pick up their children from their classrooms. Stepping Stone for our 3-Year-Old Children Entering Sunday School Sunday, September 11, during the 10:30 a.m. Worship Service. At Christ Lutheran, we welcome 3-year-old children to begin a new stage of their faith development by beginning Sunday School. To honor this big step in their lives, we will welcome these children and their families to come forward for a blessing during the 10:30 a.m. worship service on September 11. At this time, each child will be given a Spark Story Bible as a way to enter into their faith journey in the classroom on Sunday mornings and at home with their families. Page 7

12 Our H4H Family Thanks to CLC folks who donated school supplies, clothing and gift cards so Brenda could get her little ones ready for the new year. The three older children are excited about starting in a new school and we re excited for them! If you d like to include them in your prayers for a healthy, successful year with new friends, they d be most grateful. Brenda has not yet been able to take her CNA certification exam, but we are urging her to do so and sending prayers her way for success. All who lead or belong to a Small Group Ministry are invited to consider initiating a service project that would benefit Brenda and her family. Perhaps you could host a small birthday party for one of her children and get to know the family better. Or invite them to an upcoming social/service/educational event that s family-friendly. Or gather gently-used children s clothes and shoes to keep the kiddos looking spiffy for school. How about planning a meal for Brenda, complete with simple, healthy recipes and the ingredients to prepare the meal? Your imagination s the limit! Thanks, as always, for your support of this ministry. Poverty is relentless, but Brenda is determined to overcome it and we re determined to help her. - Jan Norris New Member Sunday: September 25 On September 25, at 10:30 a.m. worship we will receive new members followed by a reception at 11:30 a.m. in the CrossWay.
