2 THE OLD TESTAMENT 1 Samuel 1:4-20 On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons? After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head. As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine. But Hannah answered, No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time. Then Eli answered, Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him. And she said, Let your servant find favor in your sight. Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, I have asked him of the Lord. Lector: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

4 THE EPISTLE Hebrews 10:11-14 (15-18) Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since then has been waiting until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. [And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds, he also adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.] Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Glory to you, Lord Christ. As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings! Then Jesus asked him, Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down. When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished? Then Jesus began to say to them, Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, I am he! and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs. 5 SERMON Deborah S. Burns, deacon PRESENTATION AND EXAMINATION OF THE CANDIDATE Book of Common Prayer, p. 301 Celebrant: The Candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. I present Hughes Stephen, to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Celebrant: Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is brought up in the Christian faith and life? Celebrant: Will you by your prayers and witness help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ? Celebrant: Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? I renounce them. Celebrant: Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? I renounce them. Celebrant: Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God? I renounce them. Celebrant: Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Savior? I do. Celebrant: Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love? I do. Celebrant: Do you promise to follow and obey him as your Lord? I do. The Celebrant addresses the Congregation: Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support this child in his life in Christ? We will. Celebrant: Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant.

6 THE BAPTISMAL COVENANT Celebrant: Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Celebrant: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Celebrant: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Celebrant: Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Celebrant: Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? Celebrant: Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Celebrant: Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Celebrant: Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? PRAYERS FOR THE CANDIDATE The Celebrant then says to the congregation: Let us now pray for this child who is to receive the Sacrament of new birth. Deliver him, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Open his heart to your grace and truth. Fill him with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Keep him in the faith and communion of your holy Church.

7 Teach him to love others in the power of the Spirit. Send him into the world in witness to your love. Bring him to the fullness of your peace and glory. Celebrant: Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and forever. Amen. THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant: We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for every. Amen. THE BAPTISM The Candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, who then pours water upon him, saying: Hughes Stephen, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Celebrant: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this, your servant, the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him a inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.

8 The Celebrant places a hand on Hughes head, marking on his forehead the sign of the cross and saying: Hughes Stephen, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. Celebrant: Let us welcome the newly baptized. Celebrant and We receive him into the household of God. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Those not receiving the Sacrament are invited to cross their arms upon their chests as a sign to the priest to give a blessing.
