2 As I See It Recently during a worship service at my home church in Nashville I was in an especially melancholy mood. I m not sure why. Perhaps it was just a case of road fatigue catching up on me. It was around the time of the unbelievable decisions handed down by the Supreme Court ordering every state to honor same sex marriages. How could five people override 8,000 years of civilization and seek to annul what most major religions of the world have believed for centuries, not to mention the clear teachings of scripture? In a country founded for the purpose of guaranteeing religious freedom, our very faith is being attacked! It was at this time the Spirit of God spoke softly to me that Sunday morning through an old hymn written by Eliza Edmunds Hewitt. My Faith Has Found A Resting Place Not in device or creed; I trust the Ever-living One, His wounds for me shall plead. I need no other argument, I need no other plea; It is enough that Jesus died And that He died for me. I need no other argument, I need no other plea; It is enough that Jesus died and that he died for me! Glory! Indeed, my faith has found a resting place. I will not fret. It is enough that Jesus died and that He died for me. I choose to rest in Him. He has it all under control. Glenn Poston Make plans now to join students and sponsors from across Tennessee for the 2015 STATE YOUTH RETREAT. NOVEMBER 6-8 MainStay Suites Pigeon Forge, TN The retreat theme, Go Fish! will explore the importance of sharing the faith with those around us. Speaker Dwayne James, pastor of Oakwood Free Will Baptist Church in Woodlawn, Tennessee, will introduce practical suggestions to help students (and sponsors) share their faith more effectively. Register Today! To register, go to the website at and complete the registration form. If you need more than 10 rooms, please contact ken@nafwb.org or simply complete a second registration form. Cost per person (based on the number in each room): One person $300 each; two people $150 each; three people $100 each; four or more people $75 each. SEND PAYMENT TO: TNCE Youth Retreat, Ken Akers PO Box 5002, Antioch, TN TWAC Retreat OCTOBER 8-10 PIGEON FORGE, TN Thank you ladies for being so actively involved in your homes and churches. I am thankful that God has a plan for everyone. "All In" is the theme for the TWAC Retreat in Pigeon Forge on October That is what the Lord wants from us. He wants our ALL. Let me remind you all today of the words left by William Borden in his Bible. "No Reserves. No Retreats. No Regrets" That is what the Christian life is all about. Giving all of our life to the Lord, while moving forward, and doing it with GREAT joy. Please accept this as a challenge from this time on. God wants us, our families, our friends, and all of our acquaintances to be a living sacrifice for Him. Are you holding back anyone or anything from full surrender to our Savior, who gave His ALL for us? Borden only lived to be 26 years old. Did he give his life in vain? A resounding NO comes from Borden as he gives to us the last two words written in his Bible: "No Regrets". How about you? Susan Forlines Application Deadline The application for the Truth & Peace Student Leadership Program is now available online at This annual student leadership conference is a three week training program designed for Free Will Baptist students whose alumni are currently in leadership positions across the denomination. One parent remarked, I do not know of any other denomination that offers programs like this. Honestly, words can t express my gratitude. If you know of a student in grades 9-12 who shows leadership potential and spiritual maturity, we invite you to encourage them to apply. All applications must be submitted by October 31, 2015.

3 Begins Construction On New Campus On June 19, 2015 Welch College officials finally closed on the sale of the West End campus. There were many years of disappointment when one buyer after another backed out for one reason or another, mostly, it seems, because of resistance and demands made by a powerful neighborhood association. All of the buildings were sold except for the Welch Library and the buildings along West End Avenue have already been torn down. The college will be allowed to use all the other buildings until a new campus in nearby Gallatin is built. On July 14 an estimated crowd of 350 gathered together for a groundbreaking ceremony. Construction is presently underway and the college hopes to be in the new facilities no later than January of Building on the Legacy Campaign It is estimated that Welch College will spend $20 million-plus to complete the construction and relocation of the campus and retire the debt on the land. In addition to approximately $12.5 million in net proceeds from the sale of the West End campus, the project will require a total of $7.5 million be raised. The capital campaign to raise these funds for campus construction is entitled Building on the Legacy. In a silent phase of the Building on the Legacy campaign, the college raised $2.1 million in pledges ($1.6 million of which has already been received). The college needs to raise an additional $5.4 million dollars in cash and gifts-in-kind ($3.4 million in five-year pledges and $2 million in gifts-in-kind of materials, labor, fixtures, etc.). With excitement about the future, a shared vision, a strong commitment, and a deliberate plan, the leadership of Welch College encourages you to participate in this campaign and rejoice together as we continue Building on the Legacy! Welch Adds New Staff Members DONNIE STEVANUS has been named the interim Men s Head Basketball Coach at Welch College. A Southern Illinois native, Stevanus graduated from Welch College in 1993 with a B.S. in teacher education. He was a member of the Flames basketball team while a student at Welch. Stevanus has taught Physical Education and Health in Metro Nashville Public Schools since the fall of 1994, having coached basketball for several age groups ranging from elementary to high school. He lives in Cheatham County, TN, with his wife of 20 years, Leah (Plunkett) and their four daughters, Elizabeth (who will be a freshman at Welch this fall), Mary Grace, Georgia, and Chloe. Donnie serves as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Bethel Free Will Baptist Church in Ashland City, TN. My faith in Jesus Christ is the most important part of who I am, Stevanus said. And my hope for the Flames is that they will be examples of what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10:31: Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God DEREK ALTOM, a 2007 graduate of Welch College will be joining the advancement team at Welch College in October as office manager for the Office of Institutional Advancement. An Indiana native, Derek has held ministry positions in Alabama and Oklahoma. He served as youth and children s pastor at New Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church, Nauvoo, Alabama, and most recently as senior pastor of First Free Will Baptist Church, Ada, Oklahoma. While at Welch, Derek was a four-year member of the college choir, traveling three years on college ministry teams. He served as student body worship leader his senior year. Altom is married to Jennifer Bryan Altom, also a 2007 Welch graduate. Derek and Jennifer are proud parents of four children, Stephen, Larry, Josiah, and Silas. Welch College has invested so much in my development academically, professionally, and spiritually. It excites me to have the opportunity to return and begin doing the same for the people of our denomination, especially with those students who are training at Welch. I believe in the mission of the college and am looking forward to working with the great men and women who minister at Welch, Altom said.

4 Head s FWB Church Celebrates 175 Years Approximately 300 cheerful and excited members gathered under an outdoor canopy on an unseasonably cool but beautiful Sunday morning in September to celebrate 175 years of continuous history dating back to There is some evidence that the church really began back as early as the 1790 s in nearby Turnersville, but unfortunately, that church lapsed. Some believe that congregation may have revived and reorganized as Head s Free Will Baptist Church in The first sanctuary was made of planks and brush but soon thereafter a log structure was built which was used until Two more church buildings have been built since that time and in the spring of 2016 the church hopes to break ground for yet a fourth building on property a short distance up the road from where their current building is located. West End, a group of students from Welch College provided fellowship music preceding the service, followed by, The Head s Praise Team, The Head s Church Trio, and soloist Susan Shepherd. The service opened with congregational singing, a welcome and prayer by Head s new pastor Rev. Billy Ellis (this was his second Sunday) and later lead by Head s recently resigned pastor, Barry Simpson, who now works with the Free Will Baptist Foundation. Former pastor s son, David Mishler (from Illinois) preached an inspiring homecoming message from Hebrews 12:1-2. Though David was not even born at the time, his father, the late Rev. William Mishler, served as the church s first full-time pastor from Barbecue and great fellowship followed under large tents set up for the festive crowd. An excellent booklet on the church s history written by Rev. Philip Morgan, Head s Assistant/Youth Pastor, was also made available. Congratulations to a church with a rich heritage and a bright future! Obituaries JEANETTE STREET, 77, passed away on March 27, She was a homemaker and a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in McEwen, TN where her husband Tommy J. Street is the pastor. Mrs. Street was born in Danville, VA but served alongside her husband in several different states. She is preceded in death by a daughter Janet Street Howard and survived by her husband Tommy, two sons, a daughter, 10 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Street had a deep love for working in the church especially Vacation Bible School. Some time ago, we introduced a wonderful and unique opportunity to expand our services into Western Arkansas. You may recall our announcement in late March 2014, Rev. Jeff Holland of First FWB Church in Charleston, AR, was given the gift of a former extended care facility by its owner Fred Schaffer. Pastor Holland then contacted Family Ministries and asked us to consider taking over the 15,000 sq. ft. building and turning it into a child care facility. Maggie House was soon born, named in honor of Maggie Schaffer, mother of the donor and original owner of the property. Renovations were soon underway, and we are in the home stretch of completion of the project. We hope to be ready to accept children by Nov. 1, Our goal is to serve individual children as well as sibling groups. Despite living at the Maggie House, we will do everything possible to mirror a family atmosphere and structure. House parents will be employed to serve as surrogate parents for the children. This structure provides an example of what the family and the home was designed to look like. The story of the Maggie House is not simply about a building being renovated. Instead, it is a story about a movement, a Holy Spirit movement, and the effects of that movement on those who chose to be moved. To date, we have received enormous response from individuals, corporate donors and faithful churches in our fundraising efforts, but are still in need of contributions to complete the project. Prayerfully consider what role God would have you play in providing for these hurting children. We THANK YOU and praise God for His faithfulness through your prayers and financial support! In His Service, Frank Woods Executive Director MAURINE EDWARDS LEE, 84, passed away on April 22, She was a faithful pastor s wife who served along with her husband Rev. George C. Lee for 63 years. The Lee s served two churches in Tennessee (Memphis and Nashville) as well as churches in Nebraska, Georgia and North Carolina. Maurine devoted many years of service on the local, state, and international level of FWB women s ministries. She also wrote and edited for Randall House which was then called the FWB Sunday School Department. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, two sons, and their spouses and three grandsons.

6 SHANNON Little Greetings from Pleasant View Tennessee! The last few months have been full of saying goodbye to dear friends in Japan and saying hello to dear friends and family in America! And while it was incredibly hard to leave, I am getting settled and am enjoying being able to worship in English, renewing friendships, and spending time with my family. My ministry in Japan and my ministry in America are very different in some respects but very similar in others. I attend worship services in both countries but in Japan I am often responsible for cleaning the church and setting up the chairs for the services. In America when I attend worship services, I am often the speaker and instead of staying in the background where I m comfortable, I m in the front sharing about the people I love in Japan. In both areas I assume the role of teacher but while I m in America, I can use English freely as I speak and am not hindered by the language barrier. In both countries I interact with children but in Japan I see them on an almost daily basis while in America it is a special occasion! Thank you so much for your prayers on my behalf during this period of transition! Please continue to pray for the FWB works in Japan! God is moving and I can t wait to see what He s going to do next!! Specifically could you pray for the Good News Chapel FWB Church as they look for a building to purchase. Please continue to pray for my friends Mrs. Y and Mrs. H. Please pray for the missionaries in Japan as they work in a difficult place. Thank you so much for your faithful prayers and giving! They are appreciated more than I can express!! If you are interested in hearing first hand what God is doing in Japan, please let me know! I am scheduling services now! JERRY AND BARB Gibbs A year already? It was last summer that we said goodbye to France and moved to Nashville, after 40 years in that beautiful, but spiritually dark country. We were happy to leave in Saint-Nazaire a solid church, with a capable French pastor at the helm. We may have left the field, but we did not retire! We re still IM missionaries, traveling to churches in our denomination. We re sharing not only what the Lord has done, and is doing in France, but also what He is doing around the world. Free Will Baptists are involved in some exciting ministries around the globe, and we re happy to share that and, incidentally, enlist more workers! Thank you, Tennessee Free Will Baptists, for the partnership you have had in our ministry over the years. You re a part of each Bible given, each witness shared, and each soul who was transformed by Christ. There are many in France who told us, Say Thank You to our American brothers and sisters in Christ who have made it possible for us to hear the Gospel! So, THANK YOU, for them. We would love to come to share with your church or group in the coming months. We want to be of service any way we can. Feel free to contact us at jgibbs@fwbgo.com or through the International Missions office. INTRODUCING LAZARO AND ARIADNA Riesgo Lázaro Riesgo attended First Free Will Baptist Church in Pinar del Río, Cuba, and accepted Christ as Savior at the age of nine. At age 17 he rededicated his life, was baptized, and began a systematic study of the Bible. Cuban pastors and leaders encouraged him to study at the seminary in Cuba. Missionaries from International Missions who taught at summer camps and the seminary challenged his worldview. Ariadna grew up in a loving, but non-christian, home. Though she became a Christian at age 15, she began to really understand and live her faith three years later. Dr. David Arteaga, a medical doctor and friend of Ariadna s mother, began a house church (eventually, Second Free Will Baptist Church of Pinar del Río) in her neighborhood. Invited to attend, Ariadna became active in serving others. Lázaro and Ariadna have worked together in ministry since their marriage in Ariadna attended medical school in Cuba, graduating in 2000 with her M.D. Meanwhile, Lázaro began yearning for more biblical training. After Ariadna s graduation, the couple began studying at the Cedars of Lebanon Seminary in Cuba. Lázaro graduated with both an associate s (2003) and a bachelor s (2007) degree in theology and Bible. Ariadna also enrolled and received her associate s degree in theology (2007). While at the seminary, Lázaro pastored the La Conchita Church in Pinar del Río. Ariadna ministered beside him, treating the sick, working in children s ministry, and performing the duties of a pastor s wife. She also received training from Child Evangelism Fellowship, and became an instructor for the organization in Lázaro served as director of the National Youth Department for Cuban Free Will Baptists from His duties included organizing camps and conferences. During this time, he initiated a youth ministry program at the seminary. He also served as a professor at Cedars of Lebanon from Over a period of several years, God burdened the couple with the need to reach beyond Cuba with the gospel. They arrived in Panama in June 2011 to work with Steve and Judy Lytle at the Bible institute in Chame. As Steve and Judy phased out their service at the seminary, Lázaro and Ariadna took on more and more responsibility, eventually serving as director and dean, as well as professors. The couple served at the seminary in Chame June 2011-July Lázaro and Ariadna were appointed as educational specialists for Hispanic ministry in April They arrived in the States in July 2015 and settled in the Nashville, Tennessee, area. They will serve as professors and trainers in Free Will Baptist works in Spanish-speaking countries.
