A HISTORY OF COFER S CHAPEL FWB CHURCH (as read by Dr. Mary Ruth Wisehart at the 2008 Homecoming Service) We ll work till Jesus comes, posted on a gaslight in North Nashville, captured the motto and the spirit of Cofer s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Thomas C. Cofer organized the church in 1880 at William T. Trotter s home. Trotter lived in a Civil War barracks on a dirt road, Buena Vista Pike. Pastor Cofer led in erecting a building at the corner of Buena Vista and Scott Street. He served as pastor of the church until his death in The first Free Will Baptist church in Nashville, called the North Nashville Free Will Baptist Church, changed its name to honor the founder. That first building burned about ten years later and the city bought the lot for Buena Vista School on the street called Ninth Avenue North. The church rebuilt on Arthur Avenue near what is now Garfield. In 1930 the congregation bought the brick building at 1600 Tenth Avenue North. Did you know that the church built a parsonage there in 1952 for $8,000?! In 1962 the congregation agreed to build a new church at the corner of King s Lane and Clarksville Highway. Brother Welch had retired. Dr. Robert Picirilli served as interim pastor and
2 directed the construction and financing on the project. The building was dedicated in In 1994 that building was sold and the congregation moved to the present site. Various pastors have served Cofer s. After the founder s death up until 1905 the records are not clear. From eight men served as pastors, including John L Welch, Sr. The man who served from was dismissed because he taught a second work of grace. Mrs. Mary Welch said of those first 20 years: The church had its revivals great times of shouting, singing, and souls saved good attendance, faithful cooperation with the local Cumberland Association, but little effort was made toward denomination outreach. (I remember her saying that she hoped her people never became so stiff and formal that they couldn t sing and shout God s praises.) Coming as pastor in 1907 was Dr. Dell Upton from Leon, West Virginia. Perhaps only in heaven will he know that he gave Cofer s Chapel a start in directions, which continue to this day. December 17, 1907, he gathered a group of women in his home and organized what they called The Ladies Aid Society. In the organization were such women as Fanny Polston, Mrs. Ed Parker, and a teenager, then known as Annie Weaver (later Mrs. Mary Ann Welch, affectionately known as Miss Mary.)
3 The women published a paper, The Free Will Baptist Record. Miss Mary told me that it once had over 500 subscribers across the country. Fannie Polston from that group asked permission to go to East Nashville and start a church. She took with her some of the women, called Willing Workers, and the East Nashville FWB was established in That Ladies Aid Society was quite active, meeting once a week and paying (at least in the 1920 s) 2 cents dues. It included men as well as women. In 1921 the Cumberland District Ladies Aid was organized at Cofer s Chapel. And the women went on to help organize the WNAC in June 1935 with women as officers in the national organization. The organization continues today with changes in the name. Dr. Upton envisioned a FWB college in Nashville. In 1907 he obtained a charter for the Free Will Baptist University. Only one student showed up for enrolment John L Welch, Jr. Cofer s continues an interest in the education of FWB young people. Pastor Welch served on the board of trustees at FWBBC for 11 years. Mrs. Welch served as secretary there for several years, endearing herself to many students. In 1979 Cofer s was the top church in giving to FWBBC. Since 1969 the church gives the
4 Welch Scholarship for students at the College to honor of the Welches and of course the library there is named for them. John L Welch, Upton s first student, became the pastor, succeeding his mentor in He served a total of 46 years at the church with some interruptions. In 1920 he became the editor of a new paper at Cofer s, Words of Life. The paper soon spread over the Cumberland District and beyond. The December 1920 issue announced The National Convention of Free Will Baptists to be held in Nashville will take place in May. The General Conference organized at that time. Other attempts at unifying Free Will Baptists resulted in the organization of the present National Association of Free Will Baptists in 1935 at Cofer s Chapel. Under the leadership of Pastor Welch, the congregation at a business meeting, February 1920, passed the following motion: That we organize a young people s Free Will Baptist Union. That Union became the FWB League, accepted by the General Conference in 1922 and later by the National Association, continuing until Rev. R. Eugene Waddell became the pastor of Cofer s in 1964 and served until He led in sending groups and individuals out on the streets and winding roads of North Nashville. Cofer s had four buses at one time with a bus director. The church grew to a claim of 447 members in (or 423?)
5 He also led the church in giving to missions. Cofer s became one of the top ten churches giving to FWB missions. When Pastor Waddell resigned to become director of the international missions office, Rev. Billy Gene Outland came as pastor Rev. Larry Powell came as pastor in 1988 and led in the move to this building on Franklin Road. Larry Montgomery, , succeeded him. Rev. Michael Waddell took the pastorate in The church was striving to reach the community and still keep giving to the Lord s work outside the church. When Pastor Waddell left in 2004, Dr. Robert Picirilli took the interim position for the second time. His challenge to the church was to reach out and touch the people around us. He led in a visitation program, anticipating a pastor to come who would help us to greater outreach. We now have that pastor in Rev. Michael Gladson. We praise the Lord for progress in many directions and look forward to greater things for Cofer s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church under his leadership. Mrs. Mary Welch s words in a history written in 1966 are still applicable today. (And I hope future generations will be able to say the same of us tomorrow.)
6 Many saintly leaders in Cofer s Chapel are due much honor for their faithful work in laying the foundation for the wonderful group that carries the burden today; some have already gone to their reward, leaving the present generation to profit from the results of their prayers, tears, and labor of love.
