1 PLEASANT VALLEY NEWSLETTER From the Pastor s Corner: October 2013 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1) I just lifted up for you one of the greatest testimonies of all scripture. It tells of things hoped for as things not seen. As followers of the Lord, his disciples, it is a word that is indispensable. Yet it seems that we must see visible results or whatever we just attempted isn t real or effective or anything upon which we are to rely. But how many things have happened in your life of faith, which you never anticipated or thought would come to pass? Yet, these things happened, possibly in some surprising ways. If you don t believe that, consider what happened in a basement laboratory in 1928 that changed the prospects for disease worldwide: New Life from a Mold On the morning of Friday, September 28, 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming noticed a Petri dish containing Staphylococcus plate culture he mistakenly left open, was contaminated by blue-green mold, which formed a visible growth. There was a halo of inhibited bacterial growth around the mold. Fleming concluded the mold released a substance that repressed the growth and affected the bacteria. He grew a pure culture and discovered it was a Pennicilium mold, now known to be Pennicillin notatum. The persistent results of Fleming s work eventually saved the lives of millions in the discovery of what we now know of Pennicillin. Now I ask you, how did faith play a part in all of this? The Letter to the Hebrews tells us in these words: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Heb. 11:1) I d say that makes for a lively study after our worship services this month. 2 Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church Council Minutes September 1, 2013 The meeting was called to order at 10:20 p.m. by President Randy Sands. Pastor Bill led us in devotion from Matthew 10:13-20 and God s Rock, from Barbara Brown Taylor s The Seeds of Heaven, and a prayer. The secretary s report was read. The treasurer s report was read. The property insurance and Workman s Comp were paid. To date we have collected $31,320 with $3,545 left to collect towards the cost of the lift. We collected $254 for bed nets for Malawi in the Mission Sunday offering. The Pastor s report was read. There will be a confirmation get-together for confirmands on September 11 at the tourist park in Mondovi from 6 to 8:30. We need to clean for Sunday School next week (September 8) and get the church cleaned for the wedding on September 21. Also, we need to move the organ and put pews in for more seating, move the small keyboard up and move the pews up away from the lift tower. John will call and get the projected lift completion date. Also in the pastor s report; our new bishop will be installed September 8 at Trinity in Eau Claire; David Sasiela of the Gideons will be at church in September. The Ambassador s report was not available. Motion to approve all reports from John. Second by Randy Winger. Motion carried. NON-AGENDA ITEMS None OLD BUSINESS Education Sunday School will begin on September 8, starting at 10:15. Ruthann will teach. We will get a sign-up sheet out to get volunteers for the rest of the year. The Christmas program will follow the format used in the past few years. The Easter monies collected in the year 2013 will be carried over to the 2014 camping season. The proceeds collected in 2014 will be added in to the total. Ambassadors We will try to get some young adults to help at Cleghorn Fest. Property The installation of an L-lift was discussed. The requested next payment was made. We will get projected completion dates. Sign on Highway 37 tabled indefinitely. Handicapped sign has been added to the sign at the intersection below the church. Chippewa Valley Energy has put flex pipe in up to the first regulator and checked for leaks. We now need to replace the glow plug on the furnace that heats the basement or see why it isn t working. There was no report on the dead pine tree in the cemetery. Dick Bahr is checking with the power company to see if they ll remove it. Randy will follow up on that. Also, John is working on finding what caused it to die? Randy will contact the carpenters that did the handicapped entry to see if they would put up the soffits. The hot water tank is on hold until the wiring is done. Worship We have not heard any more on the constitution. We need 4 songs to record on a CD to use in a situation when we don t have an available accompanist. Nothing has been done on this. Ryan Sands is researching what can be done on the Clavinova. We plan on having a booth at Cleghorn Fest again this year. The booth will be set up Saturday, September 7 and we will sell raffle tickets then and Sunday, September 8. We will need volunteers to man the booth.

3 NEW BUSINESS We have the permit number to put on the tickets for the bazaar raffle. The quilts are done. The flyers are done and Corissa has sent them to the TV and radio stations. The ad is on the website. We will charge $2 per ticket for the quilts, hog, and firewood. $5 for a book of 3 tickets. We need to get the word out that we re looking for basket donations, too. The dinner will be $8. We will serve bars, not pie. Extra bars will be packaged and put on the bake table. They will order 150 pieces of chicken. $.50 for a bar and coffee. A tent will be set up for outdoor dining. The Sojourner House in Eau Claire can accept mission offerings. Mission Sunday offering September American Lutheran Home in Mondovi October Sojourner House in Eau Claire The next council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, at 7:00 p.m. Other items The Sanctuary Singers will do the whole program/service the day of the bazaar. The sign on the corner below the church will be brought to the corner of Highway 37 and Highway 10 to advertise the bazaar. The signs advertising the bazaar will be added to the permanent signs 3 weeks before the bazaar to advertise the date. Marilyn and Roxie will organize the lefse making for the bazaar. Pastor Bill will be gone September 8 and Pastor Eide will take over for him. The pews will be steam cleaned on September 9. Meeting adjourned at 11:43 with a motion Ruth. Second by Roxie and John. See Flyer in newsletter OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE FOR OCTOBER Please see your Opportunities to serve list handed out earlier (also see the calendar) Praise Team News The praise team will lead worship at Pleasant Valley and Chippewa Valley Correctional Treatment Facility on Sunday, October 27. The group was blessed to conduct a baptism at CVCTF last month, welcoming a new member into the family of Christ. The band leads worship at the prison in Chippewa Falls one to two times a month and provides Holy Communion to the men who attend the services.

5 Women's Retreat at Pleasant Valley Ladies: Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 26 th to attend a retreat here at Pleasant Valley from approximately 9:30-2:30. The Rev. Ellie Michaud will be our guest speaker. Rev. Ellie is an Episcopal Priest who was a former nun. She was our guest speaker a few years ago when she shared insights on Mary. Rev. Ellie is delightful and inspirational. She will speak on one of two of the Beatitudes or touch on all of them. Please plan to come and bring a friend! One surgery and three chemo treatments (another 3 more to go,) God has been teaching me many things. One is that I am never alone. He constantly reassures me that He walks with me through every storm. Often He carries us through the hardest of waves that would try to bring us down. The reason I am sharing this is to give you hope through your storms. God is always with you and He is carrying you through your storms also. I have discovered how great His love is for us and He knows what we are going through."
