3 August 20, 2007 Dear Parent or Guardian, I am pleased to present these Catechetical Standards for the Diocese of San Jose. I am grateful to the diocesan Catechetical Advisory Board, and in particular, to the members of the Catechetical Standards Committee, for all that they have done for our Diocese to develop a solid set of competencies for Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. The parish community recognizes that you have already laid a foundation and nurtured faith in your home. As the primary educators of your children, you have been entrusted with the responsibility of sowing the seeds of faith. In addition to transmitting the living faith, however, our children must also be able to see that we, ourselves, are living our faith. We should never underestimate the value of our own example and the words we speak. Regular participation in Sunday mass and active involvement in the parish community shapes the identity and the faith of your children. The Diocesan Catechetical Standards will strengthen the partnership that exists between the home and the parish so that children and youth will be able to develop life-giving relationships with Christ and his Church. Not only will these standards enable parents, clergy, catechetical directors/coordinators, catechists, and the entire parish to see what is expected at each grade level, but the standards will also support them in their efforts to contribute to the faith formation process. Even young children should know that from us, they can receive the authentic teaching of the Church. At the same time, because their many questions may be difficult to answer, you as parents will need to seek continuing formation and education to be up to the task. It is my hope that these Catechetical Standards will assist all who teach children about their faith parents, clergy, and catechists to do so fully, faithfully, and confidently. 5 Introduction In September 2003, the Catechetical Advisory Board indicated a need to develop a set of age-level competencies for the catechetical programs of the Diocese of San Jose to identify the basic things that need to be learned taught and celebrated for children in grades 1-8. The Catechetical Advisory Board charged the Ad-Hoc committee for Age-Level Standards to draft competencies for grades 1-8. The committee worked for three years and completed the draft in March Two consultations with catechetical leaders took place in April The second stage of this plan will develop competencies for the older adolescent in high school and for adults. Clear and realistic expectations are important for everyone involved in the process of helping children and youth grow in faith and in an understanding of the Catholic tradition -- what we believe, how we live, how we pray and celebrate. Diocesan Catechetical Standards will allow pastors, catechetical directors/coordinators, parents, catechists and the entire parish to see what is expected at each level and enable them to contribute to the faith formation process. They will also promote consistency in catechetical programs across the diocese. The partnership of home and parish is the ground for nurturing faith. Diocesan Catechetical Standards will strengthen the partnership between the primary educators of children their parents and the supporting educators pastors and catechists so that children and youth will develop life-giving relationships with Christ and his Church. The committee identified seven categories for the formation of youth in their Catholic faith. Each category includes specific grade level competencies that every youth should know and be able to demonstrate. Through the level standards, the curriculum will be based on stated and desired competencies. Demonstrate understanding that God, the Father, takes care of us and is always faithful to us. Demonstrate an understanding that Jesus, God s son, is both human and divine. Demonstrate understanding that the Holy Spirit continues to dwell in our hearts and guides us. Identify the Apostles Creed as a summary of our faith. Demonstrate knowledge of the Nicene Creed and how it is part of our liturgy. Identify the four marks of the Church. Name the pope, the bishop and the pastor and describe their role in the church. Identify Mary as the mother of God and the Church. Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the lives of the saints including our parish s patron saint

Describe the Old Testament as the story of God s faithful relationship with his chosen people, the Hebrews. Demonstrate an understanding of God s covenant with Abraham and what this means to us. Sacraments and Liturgy 1 st Grade Tell that Baptism makes us children of God and welcomes us into the Christian family as followers of Jesus. Identify water as the primary symbol of Baptism. Recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Baptism. Talk about their experience of participation in the Sunday Liturgy with the community. Demonstrate reverence for the Church building as a sacred place. 2 nd Grade Recall that Sacraments are signs of God s love for us in which we receive God s grace. Describe the term grace as the gift of God s love, which enables us to live good Christian lives. Talk about the Sacrament of Reconciliation as an opportunity to celebrate God s love and forgiveness of sin. Describe the Sacrament of Eucharist as a prayer of the community that gives thanks and praise to God Connect the story of the Last Supper with the celebration of Mass. Tell that at Mass the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ and offered to us as a sign of God s love in Holy Communion.
