EDINBURGH CONVENTION SUNDAY 30 JUNE - FRIDAY 5 JULY
2 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN THE VISION BEHIND EDINBURGH CONVENTION IS THREEFOLD: > > To bring gifted preachers and teachers to Edinburgh to open up the scriptures and preach it with accuracy and passion to encourage, refresh and inspire Christians from all over the country as they join us for one week and then return home to serve and glorify God; > > To provide an opportunity for reverent, inspiring worship, which allows God s people to exalt His name together in a way that is unique to a conference setting; > > To create an environment of warm fellowship which transcends denominations, is grounded in the gospel, and enriches everyone who attends. These three aims extend to every age group whether adult, teenager or child. Rejuvenate, our programme for late teens and early twenties, has steadily grown over the last few years. KidZone and TeenZone will have a dedicated team to help children learn and discover more about God through His Word in an exciting way. This year s keynote speakers are Christopher Ash and Jeremy McQuoid. Each of these men has a rich Bible ministry in their own setting, alongside speaking at key Christian events around the country, where their ministry is widely appreciated. Both are committed to the task of preaching the Bible with clarity and relevance and we look forward with real anticipation to them joining us in Edinburgh. We trust the Lord for a great week and hope that you will be able to join us. Robert Murdock

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS CHRISTOPHER ASH JEREMY McQUOID Christopher is writer in residence at Tyndale House in Cambridge and a full-time preacher, speaker, and writer. He previously served as the director of the Proclamation Trust s Cornhill Training Course and as a minister and church planter. He and his wife, Carolyn, are members of St Andrew the Great Church in Cambridge and have four children and six grandchildren. Jeremy is teaching pastor at Deeside Christian Fellowship, Aberdeen. In addition to his weekly teaching ministry, he trains younger leaders, and is a trustee of the Pathways conference, an initiative to encourage more men and women into full-time gospel work in Scotland. Jeremy has written several books, including The Amazing Cross (IVP) and devotional guides to Mark s Gospel and Hebrews (10ofthose). He is married to Elizabeth, herself an author and trustee of the Keswick Convention, and they have three boys Mark (16), Daniel (13) and Nathan (8). 5
SEMINAR SPEAKERS DAVID ARMSTRONG SHARON JAMES David works part-time as an electronic engineer and biblical counsellor. In 2013 he set up New Growth Christian Counselling, which partners with Scottish churches to provide biblical counselling. For over a decade he worked as an engineer before taking time out to be a ministry apprentice at Charlotte Baptist Chapel when he completed courses with Cornhill and Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation. He is married to Libby and they have three children. Sharon works for The Christian Institute, and is author of a number of books. She studied history at Cambridge University, has a Master of Divinity degree from Toronto Baptist Seminary, and a PhD from the University of Wales. She is married to Bill, who is principal of London Seminary. They have two married children and two grandchildren. 6
JOHN SHEARER Born into a mining community in Lanarkshire, John was converted from a pagan Protestant background in his late teens in Inverness. After serving with OM and The Faith Mission, he sensed a strong call to pastoral ministry. He studied theology in Belfast before pastoring churches in Northern Ireland and Scotland and being involved in a pioneering work in the Republic of Ireland. For almost thirty years he has also had a strong commitment to the people of God in Romania. John is married to Jan and has two grown-up children, Graham and Alison, and eight grandchildren. David has been minister of St Peter s Free Church in Dundee, Scotland (the historic church of Robert Murray McCheyne) since October 1992, and was moderator of the Free Church of Scotland for He is also an associate director of Solas Centre for Public Christianity, an author, debator and broadcaster. He is married to Annabel, and together they have three grown-up children and two grandchildren. DAVID ROBERTSON 7
DAVID REIMER Having spent thirty years working in universities in Canada, England, and Scotland, in 2018 David joined the team at the Faith Mission Bible College, where he now serves as academic dean. Although his teaching area is biblical studies, he also enjoys forays into church history. He is originally from Canada, and has lived with his family in the UK since the mid-1980s. John was born in Yorkshire and comes from a farming background. His parents were converted through the work of The Faith Mission and he then came to the Lord as a teenager. He has worked with The Faith Mission for more than thirty years and is now its general director. John is married to Linda and they have three grown-up children and five grandchildren. JOHN TOWNEND For over thirty years Care for the Family has been working throughout the UK and the Isle of Man, providing parenting, relationship and bereavement support through their events, resources, courses, training and volunteer networks. The charity s work is motivated by Christian compassion, and it offers its resources and support to everyone, of any faith or none. 8
SEMINARS MONDAY THE LIFE AND LOVES OF HENRY MARTYN David Reimer GOD AND ANXIETY David Armstrong TUESDAY ARE WE REALLY ALL OMNIGENDER NOW? Sharon James LETTING THE PSALMS SHAPE YOUR PRAYER LIFE Christopher Ash Henry Martyn ( ) was a missionary to India and Persia, and translator of the Scriptures into Urdu, Persian, and Arabic. His brief and eventful life was spent in Kingdom service, and his story became a powerful force to encourage missions 200 years ago, and remains so today. Human beings know anxiety well. It creeps up on us and seems to capture our hearts and imagination in the face of all types of circumstances. Unchecked, it spirals and compounds, morphing into a fierce beast. Who is the God who can bring consolation of joy to the soul? What does Scripture teach on the relation between the living God, human nature, and the struggles of deep anxiety? In this seminar, Sharon will look at the claims of radical gender ideology, the impact this is having in public policy and education, and how we should respond. If the book of Psalms was the hymn book of Israel, it became the prayer book of Christ, nowhere more poignantly than in his cry of Psalm 22:1 from the cross. So, too, as Christians learn to pray the Psalms, we are equipped with rich resources to deepen our relationship with God, and the world in which He has placed us. 9
WEDNESDAY LEFT TO THEIR OWN DEVICES: CONFIDENT PARENTING IN A WORLD OF SCREENS Care for the Family TRAINING YOUNGER LEADERS Jeremy McQuoid THURSDAY THE WORM HAS TURNED A RENEWED CHURCH IN A POST- CHRISTIAN SCOTLAND David Robertson WHY SHOULD I GET INTO CHURCH HISTORY? Jeremy McQuoid 10 In a society that s predominantly digital, our children are growing up with a world of online possibility at their fingertips. It s an exciting world, but also a potentially dangerous one. As parents it s natural to want to protect our children from these dangers. So how can we ensure that our kids are safe without preventing them from accessing the many advantages? Jesus intentionally invested in the training of twelve men to whom He delegated His authority and sent out as His representatives to continue His work after His ascension into heaven. The Apostle Paul also invested time and energy in the building of a team that would carry on his work of planting and ministering to churches after his departure from this world. Those in leadership positions today need to follow these great examples. This seminar will look at the importance of training younger leaders and how best to go about it. In this seminar we will take a bird s-eye view of Scotland, which over its lifetime has moved from pagan to Christian to secular to post-christian pagan. We will ask whether the church can flourish as much in the post-christian paganism, as it did in the pre. The book of Acts commences by recalling all that Jesus began to do and teach, implying that this now continues in the life of the church. A lively interest in church history informs our understanding of God s continuing work in the world, warns and instructs the church today in seeing past failures, and provides hope for the future based on God s past faithfulness.
FRIDAY THE LIFE OF GEORGE MUELLER John Shearer A WINDOW ON FAITH MISSION WORK John Townend Mueller was a man who, without having a special gift of faith, proved throughout his life as a Christian that the promises of God are not Yes and No but Yes and Amen. Simply put, he was an extra ordinary man who trusted an extraordinary God. Faith Mission missionaries are involved in a wide variety of outreach and ministry ventures across the rural communities and cultures represented throughout Great Britain and Ireland. John will introduce a number of FM missionaries as they share of the challenges and encouragements of the ministries they are engaged in. The hope is that you will be thrilled as you hear of the triumphs, challenged as you get a glimpse of the immense need, burdened to pray for an outpouring of God, and inspired to get involved in bringing the gospel to these largely unreached areas of our land. SHARING IN PRAISE & WORSHIP Jonathan Hallyburton, from Congleton, Cheshire, has been involved in music for most of his life, and most recently completed his music degree at the University of Huddersfield. While travelling around the UK, Jonathan looks to honour and lift high the name of Jesus in word and song. 11
