Order of Worship 8:30 am, 11:00 am Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost Congregation A Assisting Minister Pastor Today s Theme We conclude a four week sermon series based on passages from the Letter of James. The letter was late in acceptance into the canon of Scripture. Luther viewed it as the straw epistle that seemed more about works than faith. As we explore this book, we hear words to those who live out of the Old Testament and into a world filled with religion. Our question is: What is true religion? 1
2 SERMON What is True Religion? Pastor McEachran Where There is A Disciple s Way in Life. HYMN OF THE DAY ELW Hymn 690 We Raise Our Hands to You, O Lord APOSTLES CREED A We confess our faith in the words of the Apostles Creed. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. I. INSTALLATION OF SHERRY GRINDELAND AS FELLOWSHIP COORDINATOR AND RECOGNITION OF STAFF TRANSITION TASK FORCE AND INTERVIEW TEAM I. PRESENTATION OF BIBLES THE PRAYERS A God, our trust is in you. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. (congregation is seated) LAMB OF GOD ELW page 146 COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION II. Hallelujah! Amen. POST-COMMUNION CANTICLE PRAYER S E N D I N G BLESSING CLOSING HYMN Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service ELW Hymn 712 A Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE I will Sing to You, God [Max Drischner] In anticipation of the Lord s coming, Christians are called upon to cultivate patience rather than discontent. Marks of the Christian community include praying for those who are sick and in need, celebrating with those in good health, restoring those who have strayed, confessing sins to one another, and offering forgiveness to each other. 3

5 SERMON SERIES with Pastor McEachran What is True Religion? Four Sundays of Sermons from the Letter of James In a time when the Gospel was rooting in the world, the question was What is true religion? And is Christianity just one more religion? Or, is it the way into the truth that is life? September 4 Patience in Life James 1:1-18 September 11 Impartiality in Life James 2:1-13 September 18 Faith Active in Love James 2:14-26 and James 3:13-17 September 25 A Disciple s Way James 5:7-20 The letter may have been written by James, the brother of Jesus. It was often disputed as a book worthy of the canon, to be accepted into the Scripture, but the witness of the early Christian writers quotes it often as an antidote to those who might say they have faith but fail to reach out with works of loving service.
