FEDERAL LODGE #5 Have you wondered where Federal Lodge #5 got its start? We now have a copy of the proceedings of the Grand Lodge of NH from 1792 when the first Charter was requested and granted. R.W. Dave Akridge found this while visiting the Pitt Tavern in Portsmouth. Please read and you will gain more light!

Brethren: MASTER S MESSAGE As we come out of darkness things at the Lodge are really heating up. You only have to look at the upcoming events to see how busy we will be this month, and this does not include all the DDGM Visitations scheduled this month. Please visit the District 5 web site to see all those dates. The Federal Lodge committee has been working all summer to get all the required items completed in order to have the new Lodge ready to go on January 1, The By-Laws have been written and are at Grand Lodge for their input. The Treasurers of both Strafford Lodge and Moses Paul Lodge have presented a proposed budget. The Secretaries of both Lodges are working hard to get the last of the Dues owed remitted so that we can close out the books for each Lodge. If you don t have a 2018 Dues card in your wallet, then you probably haven t paid your dues yet! Please take care of this important item ASAP. If all goes well Moses Paul Lodge will raise at least one more brother before end of the year, that will make three new MMs this year. This month you will have a chance to witness a great cornerstone ceremony as the Grand Master, Grand Lodge Officers, and Officers from both Strafford Lodge #29 and Moses Paul Lodge #96 dedicate the cornerstone of the new Dover High School. If you missed the dedication of the cornerstone at the new Dover Police Department Building, then you don t want to miss this one. Finally Brethren I would like to speak to the Merger of our two Lodges. I have talked with many of our brethren on this subject and most believe that this the only way that Masonry in Dover can survive. Both lodges had been struggling to man the required offices, and the financial health for both Lodges has not been good. I ask that you bear with us as we make this historic transition back to our roots in Federal Lodge #5. All the history of Masonry in Dover will be preserved and displayed for us and our future brothers. It will be a new day for Masonry in Dover, and I hope you will come and attend a Lodge meeting soon! Stay well and remember your obligation. Fraternally and Respectfully, Worshipful John T. Pond, Jr.. bears123@comcast.net PH

SENIOR WARDEN From the West September 2018 As we approach coming back into Light, I would ask each of you to focus on two important topics. First and foremost, we are rapidly approaching the unification of Moses Paul #96 and Strafford Lodge #29 into Federal Lodge # 5. All that stands between this happening is the vote of our Grand Lodge at our Semi-Annual Communication in November. However, much work remains as we begin to formulate a budget and merge the cultures of both Lodges into our new Lodge. Much time has already been spent and we need to devote the time between now and January 1, 2019 to make sure that our new Lodge is on a firm foundation. Our meetings thus far have been productive and positive. Secondly, we are beginning our Visitation season. We have returned to a new format. The DDGM and his Suite is received by the host Lodge. The host Lodge then exemplifies one section of one of the three degrees. The degree exemplified will be the one they will be inspected on by the DDGL followed by a critique of the presentation by senior members of the visiting Lodges. Finally, a brief educational program will then be presented on the degree section just presented. My point in sharing this new format is that while this is a return to the way things were once done, it also presents an opportunity to perhaps do a self- evaluation of where each of us is in our personal Masonic journey. It is an opportunity to see and perhaps gain further understanding of each and every section of the three degrees if you travel. We have our Lodge of Instruction which will be on September 8 th. Finally, our Education (formerly Master s Class) will begin again in September at Humane Lodge with MWGM Stew Aronson doing the program. In closing, Fall is always busy but there are many opportunities to experience, learn and progress in your personal Masonic journey and an opportunity to share that journey with our soon to be, Federal Lodge # 5 Brethren. Fraternally Worshipful Brother Dave Akridge PM

NOW IS THE HOUR This Short Talk Bulletin is based upon an address given by Most Worshipful Brother Charles R. Glassmire, PGM of Maine, at the semi-annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire in November, We thank Brother Glassmire, who is Editor of The Maine Mason, for sharing this with us. We are always thinking in Masonry about the word "building." We are told that Masons are builders. Yet how often do we ever stop and think of the true meanings of this word? We should consider it under four headings. First, we must consider the building of the vast universe; that product of the Grand Architect of the Universe; that inestimable gift of God to Man; that structure which we use every day but seldom do we stop to appreciate it and to give thanks. Sometime ago, a group of us stood atop Mount Blanc, at an altitude of 15,000 feet, viewing the majestic Alps. The beautiful fertile valley lay below us with the glaciers above. It was very easy to be awe struck, to close your eyes and to give a prayer of thanks to Almighty God. How often in our own communities do we ever look around us and give thanks for the things that do not have actual physical beauty and yet see beneath them the handiwork of the Great Architect of the Universe? Yes, even sometimes in things which are actually ugly to the sight. Who can look at the town drunk, for instance, and see in him a work of God? Yes, it's a work of God but a neglect of man and perhaps we are largely responsible for much of this neglect. We pass him day by day lying in the gutter, when perhaps by stretching forth a helping hand, giving a pat on the back or a word of encouragement, we might help that man to achieve his rightful place in society, all to the glory of God. It's up to us to help make this universe the place that He intended it to be. Secondly, if we're thinking in terms of building, we must think in terms of the fact that man is a builder and from the day of his birth he is constantly engaged in the building of his own personality and his own character. Every day we have the opportunity to do things which will make us better individuals but so many times we neglect it. There is an old saying which says, "What man needs not

nor sows most abundantly grows." This, of course, in one connotation refers to the weeds in that neglected garden behind the house. But think for a moment of the neglect which permits those weeds to grow inside the mind and the character of each and every one of us. Before long, just as the beautiful flowers are destroyed by the weeds in the garden, so is that great mind which is potentially there destroyed by the weeds of neglect. A little poem says it better: Of all that I hear and see Day by day I am building me. I alone have the right to choose What to reject and what to use. Nobody's workmanship but mine Can keep the structure true and fine, Strong or feeble, false or true. I build myself by the deeds I do. Yes, Brethren, remember we are saved not by what we think but by what we are. Day by day we build ourselves by the deeds we do. Next, if we are going to consider man as a builder, we must appreciate the fact that man is also commissioned to build an ideal social structure and Masons must qualify as living stones for that structure if it is going to be the society it can be. We have another great responsibility as Masons. We tell the world that as Masons we take good men and make them better. Are we really doing this today in Masonry? How many times have we had the unpleasant experience of raising a Brother from that Altar and having him go out the door and never seeing him again? Statistically, one out of three of the Brethren that are raised at that Altar will leave that night and never come back. Why? The answer is obvious and perhaps falls into two categories. First of all, we have lost the opportunity by failing to impress upon him the beauties of Freemasonry. We have perhaps done the work in a slipshod fashion. Officers have mumbled the words which have been poorly memorized and the Brother gets very little from it. He sees nothing that you and I have seen as we have gone through Masonry... of the things which bring us back. Secondly, so many times the man's dignity is insulted. How often have we unfortunately seen a man literally ridiculed for the amusement of some of the Brethren on the sidelines. We tell a man to kneel at the Altar and pray to Almighty God and then tell him to arise, follow the conductor and fear no danger, only at a later date to have him treated in such a manner that he can't see the beauties because of the lack of dignity.

We are told that of those who do come back, another third are going within a year. Once again, the opportunity is lost. No man becomes a Mason simply by taking three degrees any more than a man becomes a Christian simply by joining a church. It requires work. It requires work on his part and it requires work on our part. First to impart the knowledge to him and secondly to give him a job to do. Only if he is kept busy will he return as you and I have done. Yes, we can take good men and make them better and we have the tools with which to work right there on the Altar. That great American poet, Brother Edwin Markham, put it in verse this way: We are blind until we see That in the human plan Nothing is worth the making if It does not make the man. Why build these cities glorious If man un-builded goes? In vain we build the work unless The builder also grows. Lastly, my Brethren, as we speak in terms of building, we must appreciate the fact that from the moment we are born until the day we die we are constantly engaged in the building of that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. How many of us go through life consciously building that house? As young men we're immortal. No young man ever thinks of the possibility of dying. It's only when we get older that we realize that we cannot expect an exemption from the common fate of man, but sometimes by the time that realization comes, it's too late and we have not begun, let alone finished the building of that house not made with hands. I suggest to you that if you have not started building it yet, now is the hour. We are very fortunate to have religion to assist us in this and I don't mean necessarily the membership in any particular church or sect. I'm thinking in terms of the definition of religion which says, "Religion is the life of God in the soul of man." We have the power to reach God in prayer and yet most of us waste that power. I suspect that ninety percent of all of the prayers that are wafted Heavenward are never heard because they are simply a repetition of the "gimmies." "Gimmie" this, "gimmie" that, "gimmie" me something else, when really what we should be praying for is the strength and the character to carry on in daily life, working for those things which are pleasing in His sight as we build our house not made with hands. Oh, it's a pretty tough world as we look around. Many times we come home discouraged by

what we see--war and pestilence on one hand, dishonesty in high places on the other hand. We may get into bed at night and with all these things around us find it very difficult to sleep. Unfortunately, too many people in this culture are turning to drugs. There's no answer here. Drugs may provide a small portion of oblivion, but later the problem is still there. Other people say if you come home at night and get into bed and can't sleep, that you should count sheep. I don't believe this works either. No, Brethren, if you come home at night, get into bed and cannot sleep, don't count sheep-- talk to the Shepherd. In the meeting notice of a Lodge in one of the Western Jurisdictions, we recently saw an item which sums it up nicely: "A favorite pastime with many people-especially women--is rearranging furniture. "Don't you think it is about time we, the human race, get busy and rearrange our mental furniture? Well, I do, and I think we had better do it real fast. "First of all, we should take everything from the walls of the mind. Then we should sweep the floor and scrub it so it will be clean. "Next, we ought to change our thoughts let us move the hatred table into the love corner, the sinful dresser behind the door of forgiveness, and the beds of prejudice by the wall of kindness. "After this is done, we can lie down and rest with a clean mind and life." Brother Builders, Now is the hour! Listen to Brother Ben Franklin What is Freemasonry

The Old Past Master Speaks ATTENDANCE "There are a lot of Masons in this old lodge tonight" began the Old Past Master. "See the new faces? Must be most two hundred. Pretty good attendance, what?" "But is it a good attendance?" asked the Very New Mason. "Why, there must be six hundred members on the rolls. Seems a pity they can't all get out to enjoy this kind of an evening, doesn't it? Seems to me Masonry fails when she has so many on the rolls who don't come regularly to lodge." "I don't agree with you!" answered the Old Past Master. "Masonry succeeds because she gets so many of her members to take an interest! True, she might...if she were a wizard... so interest every one of her devotees that all would crowd the lodge room every meeting might. Then, I think, there would be no use for Masonry, because the millennium would have come. But in place of being discouraged because only a third or a fourth of our members attend, I am always highly encouraged because so many do attend. "You see, my brother, Masons are picked from the general body of men by two processes, and neither one of them works out for the very best interests of the Order. The first process is a man's making up his mind he wants to be a Mason. If we could go to the best men and ask them, we would get a lot better men than we do, of

course. Equally, of course, we would vastly injure the Order by making it seek the man instead of the man seek its gentle philosophy. I wouldn't change that unwritten law for anything, but the fact remains that as the first selection of Masons is made by the profane, it isn't always for the best interests of the Order. "The second selective work is done by committee. Now in theory every one appointed on a committee to examine a member is a sort of cross between a criminal lawyer, an experienced detective, a minister of the gospel, a super-perfect man, a well read Mason and an Abraham Lincoln for judgment! "But as a matter of fact most committeemen are just average men like you and me, and we do our work on committees in just an average sort of way, with the result that many a self-selected candidate slips into our ranks who has no real reason for being there. The theory is that all men become Masons because of a veneration of our principles. The fact is that a lot become Masons because their brother is one, or their boss is one, or they want to wear a pin and be a secret society member, or they hope it will help them in business. "They get into the lodge and find it quite different from what they expect. They learn that they can't pass out business cards, that it doesn't help them because the boss belongs, and that they don't have to come to lodge to wear a pin. If they are the kind of men to whom Masonry doesn't appeal because of her truth, her philosophy, her Light, her aid in living, they wander away. They become mere dues-payers, and often, stomach Masons, who come around for the feed or entertainment. "Don't let it distress you. It takes all sorts of people to make a world and it would be a very stupid place indeed if we were all alike. There is room in the world for the man who doesn't care for Masonry. He has his part to play in the world as well as the man to whom Masonry makes great appeal. Do not condemn him because he has become a member of the fraternity and found it not to his liking. At least there is something in his heart which was not there before. "And let me tell you something, my brother. There are many, many men who become Masons, in the sense that they join a lodge and pay dues, although they never attend, who do good Masonic work. There is Filby, for instance. Filby has been a member of this lodge

twenty years and has never been in it, to my knowledge, since the day he was raised. I don't know why. I rather think he was frightened, and showed it, and has been afraid of being laughed at, now that he knows there was nothing to be frightened about. But there was never need for money that Filby didn't contribute; there was never a committee appointed to work on the Masonic Home that Filby didn't head. There was never any work to be done outside the lodge that Filby didn't try to help do it. He is a good Mason, even if he doesn't attend lodge. "And there are lots of young men who join the fraternity and neglect their lodge in early years, who turn their hearts towards it in later years; boys who are too fond of girls and dances and good times to spend a moment in serious thought while they are just in the puppy age, who grow up finally to become thoughtful men, turning their hearts toward the noble teachings of this fraternity and becoming most ardent lodge members and attendees. "Oh, no, my brother, never weep because we have but a portion of our membership at a meeting. Be glad we have so many; be happy that those who come, come so regularly and enthusiastically, be proud that there is such a large number of men content to sit through the same degrees year after year to learn what they can, let sink deeper the hidden beauties of the story, absorb a little more of that secret doctrine which lies behind the words of the ritual. "Masonry is not for yesterday, for today, for tomorrow alone. She is for all the ages to come. The Temple Not Build With Hands cannot be built alone by you and me, nor in a day, nor yet a century. And remember that the stone rejected by the builder was finally found the most necessary of them all. Perhaps the man who doesn't come now to lodge may be the most earnest and powerful Mason of tomorrow. Only the Great Architect knows. Masonry is His work. Be content to let it be done His way."

A LODGE IS BORN "What did you think of it?" inquired the Old Tyler of the New Brother as they came out of the lodge room in which a lodge had just been consecrated, dedicated and constituted. "It isn't often that we have a chance to see that ceremony." "I don't care if I never see it again." returned the New Brother. It's hot in there, and it struck me as a lot of blah, just words which mean nothing. Why do they have to go to all that bother? Why the corn and wine and oil? Why not just say, 'you are a lodge- go ahead and work,' and have it over with?" "Would you have the Master say, 'this lodge is open' and 'this lodge is closed' for an opening and closing ceremony?" asked the Old Tyler. "I wouldn't go as far as that," answered the New Brother. "But this ceremony leaves me cold. I can't see any sense in having this new lodge anyhow!" "Oh! So that's it!" The Old Tyler smiled wisely. "You are objecting to the beautiful ceremony we have just witnessed because you are not in sympathy with the creation of a new lodge at this time and place! "I wouldn't say that." The New Mason flushed. "Did you, by any chance, happen to want election to an office in the new lodge, and they chose someone else?" The New Brother made no answer. "There will be other new lodges!" comforted the Old Tyler. "And you are a little too young in Masonry to aspire to

office in a new lodge. But I can't let you keep this wrong attitude about one of the really beautiful ceremonies of our beloved order. Have you ever attended the graduation exercises of any grammar school, high school, or college?" "My little girl graduated from the eighth grade into high school last week," answered the New Brother. "Why?" "It's at least an even bet that you saw half of that ceremony through wet eyes," answered the Old Tyler. "As you watched all those fresh faces, boys and girls leaving childhood for youth, taking the big step that is between the grade schools and high school, facing the unknown future so blithely, was not your heart touched with a knowledge of all the disappointments and heartaches these happy and carefree children must undergo? "Of course." "You wouldn't be a human father otherwise! To me a consecration, dedication and constitution of a lodge is something like that. The new little lodge starts out so bravely. It is composed of Masons who have had no Masonic responsibilities. Sometimes one can find an old Past Master who will go into the line, but generally they are new and untried officers. They satisfy the authorities that they are competent to confer the degrees, but who knows their abilities to form a new lodge into a coherent whole, their tact in keeping harmony, their knowledge of the necessity for practicing brotherhood in the lodge? They come here, these brave bright brethren, and the Grand Lodge performs this beautiful ceremony. The corn, the wine, the oil, are poured for them. They are consecrated to God, dedicated to the Holy Saints John, and constituted a member of the family of lodges under this Grand Lodge. Masters of other lodges are present to wish them well. Some come bearing gifts - the jewels the officers wear, the working tools, perhaps a modest check from the lodge which sponsored them to help the new thin treasury get a start. They have no traditions to steady them. They have no matters of common knowledge to bind them together. They have no past of which to talk. All they possess is their mutual Masonry and their mutual responsibility - their hopes, their fears, their plans and their determination. An unwritten page is theirs on which to record their Masonic future. The Mystic Tie is all they know of lodge life. The Grand Master pronounces them a lodge, the charter or warrant is

presented and they are born. To me it is a simple, beautiful, pathetic, and interesting site, and one I never tire of seeing." "I am a fool." The New Mason spoke with conviction. "Old Tyler, why did the Senior Deacon gather up the corn that was used and put it carefully away?" "He couldn't gather the wine and oil, since they were spilled for good," answered the Old Tyler. "But that little horn of corn will be kept until this new lodge itself sponsors another new lodge, then to be offered to them, that they may be consecrated with the same corn poured for the Mother Lodge." "Oh, I am a fool, indeed," cried the New Mason. "Please take me with you to the next such ceremony, will you?" The Old Tyler grunted. But it sounded like a promise. Let s Laugh Masonic Light Joke A small Lodge had had a string of bad luck. It was preparing to initiate a candidate on a steamy evening in June and it s air conditioner had stopped working. After sweating their way through part of the work, the Master had asked the candidate what he most desired. The candidate replied "a beer". At this juncture, the S.D., being startled, whispered "light" to the candidate. "OK," the candidate replied, "a lite beer."
