20 st January 2019 Second Sunday after Epiphany with Holy Baptism

Welcome! We bid you a very warm welcome to our worship. As we gather in this sacred space, silent prayer and reflection helps us to prepare for the service. We acknowledge our presence is on the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Listening devices are available for the hearing impaired during the service; please contact one of our greeters. Prelude Words of welcome Meditation on Ebenezer Please rise as you are able to sing our opening Hymn No. 369 in Common Praise. 1 Thy strong word did cleave the darkness; at thy speaking it was done. For created light we thank thee, while thine ordered seasons run: eluia, alleluia, Praise to thee who light dost send! eluia, alleluia! eluia without end! 2 Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness, dark as night and deep as death, broke the light of thy salvation, breathed thine own life-giving breath: eluia, alleluia, Praise to thee who light dost send! eluia, alleluia! eluia without end! 3 Thy strong Word bespeaks us righteous; bright with thine own holiness, glorious now we press toward glory, and our lives our hopes confess: eluia, alleluia, Praise to Thee who light dost send! eluia, alleluia! eluia without end! 2

Children s focus 4 God the Father, Light Creator, to thee laud and honour be; to thee Light of Light begotten, praise be sung eternally; Holy Spirit, Light Revealer, glory, glory, be to thee: mortals, angels, now and ever praise the holy Trinity! +The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. There is one body and one Spirit. There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Lord of the wedding feast, take our hearts of stone and flood them with new wine, so that we may savour the daily miracles that reveal your Son in our midst, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Please sit for a reading from the Prophecy of Isaiah (Chapter ) For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; 3

Reader and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Please remain seated to chant Psalm Cantor sings Refrain sing Refrain Choir only 5 Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, * and your faithfulness to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice like the great deep; * you save both mortals and beasts, O Lord. 7 How priceless is your love, O God! * Your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings. sing Refrain Choir only 8 They feast upon the abundance of your house; * you give them drink from the river of your de- lights. 4

sing Refrain 9 For with you is the well of life, * and in your light we see light. 10 Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, * and your favour to those who are true of heart. Please sit for a reading from the first Letter of Paul to the Corinthians (Chapter ) Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. 5

We remain standing and turn to face the Deacon Deacon Deacon Deacon eluia, alleluia, alleluia. Our eyes have seen your salvation, a light to enlighten the nations. eluia, alleluia, alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St John. (Chapter ) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. 6

At the conclusion of the Gospel Deacon Sermon The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The Venerable John Stephens Please rise as you are able to sing our Gradual Hymn No. 162 in Common Praise 1 Sing of God made manifest in a child robust and blest, to whose home in Bethlehem where a star had guided them, magi came and gifts unbound, signs mysterious and profound: myrrh and frankincense and gold grave and God and king foretold. 2 Sing of God made manifest when at Jordan John confessed, "I should be baptized by you, but your bidding I will do." Then from heaven a double sign -- dove-like Spirit, voice divine -- hailed the true Anointed One: "This is my beloved Son." 3 Sing of God made manifest when Christ came as wedding-guest and at Cana gave a sign, turning water into wine; further still was love revealed as he taught, forgave, and healed, bringing light and life to all who would listen to God's call. 4 Sing of God made manifest on the cloud-capped mountain's crest, where both voice and vision waned until Christ alone remained: glimpse of glory, pledge of grace, 7

given as Jesus set his face towards the waiting cross and grave, sign of hope that God would save. Presentation and Examination of the Candidate Parents and sponsors Parents and sponsors Parents and sponsors Answer Answer Answer Answer The candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. I present Ella Muriel to receive the sacrament of baptism. Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is nurtured in the faith and life of the Christian community? I will, with God s help. Will you by your prayers and witness help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ? I will, with God s help. Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the evil powers of this world, which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? I renounce them. Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God? I renounce them. Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Saviour? I do. Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love? 8

Answer Answer I do. Do you promise to obey him as your Lord? I do. Let us now pray for Ella, who is to receive the sacrament of new birth. Prayers for the candidate and the world Intercessor Intercessor Intercessor Intercessor Intercessor Intercessor Intercessor Deliver Ella, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Lord, hear our prayer. Open her heart to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer. Fill her with your Holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Teach her to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Send her into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer. Bring her to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. We pray, too, for all who are ill, anxious, grieving or sad this day. We remember those in this parish and on our hearts and pray God s blessing. Grant, O Lord, that Ella, and all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for Him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. 9

The blesses the water The Baptismal Covenant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over water the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through water you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In water your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now bless+ this water by the power of your Holy Spirit, that Ella may be cleansed from sin and born again, and may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Saviour. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, The Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 10

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in God the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself? I will, with God s help. 11

The Baptism The Giving of the Light Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the earth? I will, with God s help. Ella Muriel, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I sign you with the cross, and mark you as Christ s own for ever. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Receive the light of Christ, to show that you have passed from darkness to light. After the newly baptized has received a candle, we all say Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. 12

Let us welcome the newly baptized. We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. Please rise as you are able for the Peace Please exchange a sign of peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. During the singing of Hymn No 437, a collection will be taken. 1 Jesus, come, for we invite you, guest and master, friend and Lord; now, as once at Cana's wedding, speak, and let us hear your word: lead us through our need or doubting, hope be born and joy restored. 2 Jesus, come! Transform our pleasures, guide us into paths unknown; bring your gifts, command your servants; let us trust in you alone: though your hand may work in secret, all shall see what you have done. 3 Jesus, come in new creation, heaven brought near in power divine; give your unexpected glory, changing water into wine: rouse the faith of your disciples -- come, our first and greatest sign! 4 Jesus, come! Surprise our dullness; make us willing to receive more than we can yet imagine, all the best you have to give: 13

Prayer over the gifts let us find your hidden riches, taste your love, believe, and live! Living God, you have revealed your Son as the Messiah. May we hear his word and follow it, and live as children of light. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through whom you have created all things. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. In fulfilment of your will he stretched out his hands in suffering, to bring release to those who place their hope in you; and so he won for you a holy people. 14

He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of sin and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence. Now with all creation we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death, took bread and gave you thanks, saying, Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you. In the same way he took the cup, saying, This is my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of me. Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread and this cup, 15

giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church. Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, filling them with the Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth, that together we may praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ. glory and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. 16

We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. We invite all baptized Christians to receive Communion at our altar. If you wish to receive a blessing please come at the same time. Intinction is not permitted as it contaminates the wine. It is acceptable to receive either bread or wine only. If you are unable to make your way to the altar please ask a sidesperson to have Communion brought to you. Gluten free wafers are available. Communion Anthem Please rise as you are able Hide Me Under the Shadow of Thy Wings John E. West God of glory, you nourish us with bread from heaven. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, that through us your light may shine in all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we ask or imagine. Glory to God from 17

We sit for the notices generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Blessing The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. We sing our final Hymn No 384 in Common Praise 1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation. O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation: ye who hear, brothers and sisters draw near, praise him in glad adoration. 2 Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth, shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth: hast thou not seen how thy entreaties have been granted in what he ordaineth? 3 Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee: ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if with his love he befriend thee. 18

4 Praise to the Lord, who, when tempests their warfare are waging, who, when the elements madly around thee are raging, biddeth them cease, turneth their fury to peace, whirlwinds and waters assuaging. 5 Praise to the Lord, who when darkness of sin is abounding, who when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding, sheddeth his light, chaseth the horrors of night, saints with his mercy surrounding. 6 Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! that hath life and breath come now with praises before him! Let the Amen sound from his people again: gladly for aye we adore him. Deacon Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Postlude Choral Variation Lobb Den Herren J. Walther The organ postlude is to uplift us as we go out into the world. Kindly refrain from applauding. Please join us in the Trendell Lounge for refreshments. 19
