12 th February 2017 Sixth Sunday After Epiphany

Welcome! We bid you a very warm welcome to our worship. As we gather in this sacred space, silent prayer and reflection helps us to prepare for the service. We acknowledge our presence is on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Listening devices are available for the hearing impaired during the service; please contact one of our greeters. Prelude Words of welcome Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot (These are the holy ten commandments) J. Pachelbel Please rise as you are able to sing our opening Hymn No. 645 in Common Praise 1 Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardor glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. 2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3 Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, 2

till they become the place wherein the Holy Spirit finds a dwelling. +The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand to sing together the Gloria in Excelsis 3

Children s focus Let us pray. Living One, in whose freedom creation was born as gift: free us from the need to possess, define and silence others, so that we might rejoice in the strangeness of your beauty revealed in flesh and blood; through Jesus Christ, our reconciliation. Amen. Please sit for a reading from the Book of Deuteronomy (Chapter ) See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore 4

Reader to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Please rise as you are able to chant Psalm Happy are they whose ¹way is¹ blameless, * who walk in the ¹law ¹of the¹ Lord! 2 Happy are they who observe ¹your de-¹crees * and seek ¹you with ¹all their¹ hearts; 3 who never do ¹any¹ wrong, * but always ¹walk ¹in your¹ ways. 4 You laid down ¹your com-¹mandments, * that ¹we should ¹fully¹ keep them. 5 Oh, that my ways were made ¹so di-¹rect * that ¹I might ¹keep your¹ statutes! 6 Then I should not be ¹put to¹ shame, * when I regard all ¹your¹ com-¹mandments. 7 I will thank you with an ¹unfeigned¹ heart, * when I have ¹learned your ¹righteous¹ judgements. 8 I will ¹keep your¹ statutes; * do not ¹utter-¹ly for-¹sake me. Glory be to the Father, and ¹to the ¹Son,* and ¹to the ¹Holy ¹Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ¹ever ¹shall be,* world without ¹end. ¹A-¹men. Please sit for a reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians (Ch 3.1-9) And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, 5

Reader for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarrelling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? For when one says, I belong to Paul, and another, I belong to Apollos, are you not merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labour of each. For we are God s servants, working together; you are God s field, God s building. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Please rise as you are able to sing our Gradual hymn No. 474 in Common Praise We turn to face the Reader 1 Jesus, where'er thy people meet, there they behold thy mercy-seat; where'er they seek thee, thou art found, and every place is hallowed ground. 2 For thou, within no walls confined, inhabitest the humble mind; such ever bring you where they come, and going, take thee to their home. 3 Here may we prove the power of prayer to strengthen faith and sweeten care, to teach our faint desires to rise, and bring all heaven before our eyes. 6

Deacon Deacon Deacon eluia, alleluia, alleluia. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. eluia, alleluia, alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Matthew (Chapter ) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, You shall not murder ; and whoever murders shall be liable to judgement. But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, You fool, you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. 7

At the conclusion of the Gospel Deacon Sermon It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord. But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be Yes, Yes or No, No ; anything more than this comes from the evil one. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 4 Lord, we are few, but thou art near; nor short thine arm, nor deaf thine ear; O rend the heavens, come quickly down, and make a thousand hearts thine own! The Reverend Liz Hamel Please rise as you are able as we affirm our faith I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. 8

He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Please remain standing or kneel for our prayers At the conclusion of the Prayers of the People: Intercessor Confession and Absolution Silence is kept Rejoicing in the fellowship of Mary the mother of Jesus, and St John the Beloved, our patron and all the saints we commend ourselves and all people to your unfailing love. Merciful Father: Accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites them to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, 9

that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Peace may exchange a sign of peace Christ is our hope; we give him glory for that great grace by which upon the cross he stretched out his hands in love to us all. By that same grace may he come, our risen Saviour, into every gesture of unity and fellowship which we make toward one another, and make the peace we share his peace. The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. During the singing of Hymn No 60 a collection will be taken. 1 I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved, and free, the life of Jesus to recall, in love laid down for me. 2 I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ's communion bread. 3 As Christ breaks bread, and bids us share, each proud division ends. The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends. 4 The Spirit of the risen Christ, unseen, but ever near, 10

is in such friendship better known, alive among us here. 5 Together met, together bound by all that God has done, we'll go with joy, to give the world the love that makes us one. Living God, you have revealed your Son as the Messiah. May we hear his word and follow it, and live as children of light. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. It is indeed right that we should praise you, gracious God, for you created all things. You formed us in your own image: male and female you created us. When we turned away from you in sin, you did not cease to care for us, but opened a path of salvation for all people. You made a covenant with Israel, and through your servants Abraham and Sarah gave the promise of a blessing to all nations. Through Moses you led your people from bondage into freedom; 11

through the prophets you renewed your promise of salvation. Therefore, with them, and with all your saints who have served you in every age, we give thanks and raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. Holy God, source of life and goodness, all creation rightly gives you praise. In the fullness of time, you sent your Son Jesus Christ, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He healed the sick and ate and drank with outcasts and sinners; he opened the eyes of the blind and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom to the poor and to those in need. In all things he fulfilled your gracious will. 12

On the night he freely gave himself to death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Gracious God, his perfect sacrifice destroys the power of sin and death; by raising him to life you give us life for evermore. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Recalling his death, proclaiming his resurrection, and looking for his coming again in glory, we offer you, Father, this bread and this cup. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts, that all who eat and drink at this table may be one body and one holy people, a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ, our Lord. 13

Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. As our Saviour taught us, let us pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. 14

We invite all baptized Christians to receive Communion at our altar. If you wish to receive a blessing please come at the same time. Intinction is not permitted as it contaminates the wine. It is acceptable to receive either bread or wine only. If you are unable to make your way to the altar please ask a sidesperson to have Communion brought to you. Gluten free wafers are available. Communion Anthem If ye love me, obey my commandments T. Tallis Please rise as you are able Please sit for the notices Gracious God, lover of all, by this sacrament you make us one family in Christ your Son, one in the sharing of his body and blood, one in the communion of his Spirit. Help us to grow in love for one another and come to the full maturity of the Body of Christ. We ask this in his name. Amen Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Blessing May God the holy and undivided Trinity, three persons in one God, inspire you to live as one, that you may witness to the perfect unity of God s love; And the blessing of God Almighty, (+) the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. 15

We sing our final Hymn No 362 in Common Praise Deacon Postlude 1 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice. 2 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age the same; his holy name the Lord, the mighty one. 3 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by; proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high. 4 Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children's children and forevermore! Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Dies sind die heiligen zehn Gebot' (These are the holy ten Commandments that our Lord God gave us, through Moses, His faithful servant, high upon Mount Sinai. Kyrie eleison!) BWV JS Bach The final organ prelude is to uplift us as we go out into the world and as such is part of our worship. Please refrain from applauding. Please join us for refreshments in the Trendell Lounge. 16

The St John s Covenant Prayer, which we invite you to pray Infinite Lord and eternal God rouse your church in this place, restore your people s sense of Mission and revive your work in holiness and strength. By your Spirit teach us to give our energy, our time, our money, our service and our prayer that your Kingdom may be advanced here and in the entire world; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 17
