2 Welcome! We bid you a very warm welcome to our worship. As we gather in this sacred space, silent prayer and reflection helps us to prepare for the service. We acknowledge our presence is on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Sound the note of judgment, warning us of right and wrong, turning us from sin and sadness till once more we sing the son Refrain Sound the trumpet! Tell the message! Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please rise as you are able to sing together Hymn No Glory, in the highest glory, peace to all in all their days. Worship, thanks and praise unceasing to the Source of all we raise: reigning in the sapphire height, hidden from our mortal sight, now receive our adoration, as we make our supplication. 2 Jesus Christ, the world s Redeemer, Lamb of God, for sinners given, Word eternal, born of Mary, Word made flesh, the face of heaven: holy one, to you we pray, hear us in the realms of day, with the Spirit there united, and the God-head high exalted. Let us pray. God of glory, immerse us in your grace, mark us with your image, and raise us to live our baptismal promises, 3

4 so that, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we may follow the example of Christ your beloved in whose name we pray. Amen. Children s focus and asperging of congregation Please sit for a reading from Isaiah (Chapter ) But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, Give them up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. 6 Please sit for a reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Chapter ) Reader Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, If it were a matter of crime or serious villainy, I would be justified in accepting the complaint of you Jews; but since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves; I do not wish to be a judge of these matters. And he dismissed them from the tribunal. Then all of them seized Sosthenes, the official of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal. But Gallio paid no attention to any of these things. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Please rise as you are able to sing our Gradual hymn No. 45 in Common Praise 1 Down Galilee s slow roadways, a stranger travelled on from Nazareth to Jordan to be baptized by John. He went down to the waters with soldier, scribe, and slave, but there within the river the sign was birth and grave. 2 Arising from the river, He saw the heavens torn; It seemed the sky was open to show the Spirit s form. The holy dove descended; he heard a glorious voice: You are my own beloved - my child, my heart, my choice. 6

7 We turn to face the Reader Deacon Deacon Deacon eluia, alleluia, alleluia. This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. eluia, alleluia, alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. At the conclusion of the Gospel Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Luke (Chapter , 21-22) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshingfloor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 7

8 Sermon 3 We too have found a roadway; it led us to this place. We all have had to travel in search of hope and grace. But now beside this water again a voice is heard: You are my own, my chosen, Beloved of your Lord. The Reverend Dr. Pitman Potter Please rise as you are able as we affirm our faith Let us confess our faith, as we say, We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 8

9 He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please remain standing or kneel for our prayers At the conclusion of the Prayers of the People: Intercessor Confession and Absolution Silence is kept Rejoicing in the fellowship of Mary the mother of Jesus, and St John the Beloved, our patron and all the saints we commend ourselves and all people to your unfailing love. Merciful God: Accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites them to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. 9

10 Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Peace may exchange a sign of peace We are the body of Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Let us then pursue all that makes for peace and builds up our common life. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. During the singing of Hymn No 163, tune 182, a collection will be taken. 1 When Christ s appearing was made known, King Herod trembled for his throne; but he who offers heavenly birth sought not the kingdom of this earth. 10

11 Prayer over the gifts 2 The eastern sages saw from far and followed on his guiding star; by light their way to Light they trod, and by their gifts confessed their God. 3 Within the Jordan s sacred flood the heavenly Lamb in meekness stood, that he, to whom no sin was known, might cleanse his people from their own. 4 And O what a miracle divine, when water reddened into wine! He spake the word, and forth it flowed in streams that nature ne er bestowed. 5 glory, Jesus, be to thee for this thy glad Epiphany: whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost forevermore. God of life and freedom, we celebrate the revelation of Jesus as the Christ who makes all creation new. Accept all we offer you this day and make us new in him, who is Lord for ever and ever. Amen. 11

12 Holy God, Lover of creation, we give you thanks and praise for in the ocean of your steadfast love you bear us and place the song of your Spirit in our hearts. When we turn from your love and defile the earth, you do not abandon us. Your Spirit speaks through Huldah and Micah, through prophets, sages, and saints in every age, to confront our sin and reveal the vision of your new creation. Joining in the song of the universe we proclaim your glory saying singing: Gracious God, in the fullness of time you sent Jesus the Christ to share our fragile humanity. Through Jesus life, death, and resurrection you open the path from brokenness to health, from fear to trust, from pride and conceit to reverence for you. 12

13 Rejected by a world that could not bear the Gospel of life, Jesus knew death was near. His head anointed for burial by an unknown woman, Jesus gathered together those who loved him. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it and gave it to his friends, saying, Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, gave you thanks, and said Drink this all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. And now we gather at this table in response to his commandment, to share the bread and cup of Christ s undying love, and to proclaim our faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Breathe your Holy Spirit, the wisdom of the universe, upon these gifts that we bring to you: this bread, this cup, ourselves, our souls and bodies, that we may be signs of your love for all the world and ministers of your transforming purpose. Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, Creator of all, 13

14 and we bless your holy name for ever. Amen. And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. 14

15 We invite all baptized Christians to receive Communion at our altar. If you wish to receive a blessing please come at the same time. Intinction is not permitted as it contaminates the wine. It is acceptable to receive either bread or wine only. If you are unable to make your way to the altar please ask a sidesperson to have Communion brought to you. Gluten free wafers are available. Communion Anthem Come, Holy Ghost Orlando Gibbons Please rise as you are able Gracious God, lover of all, by this sacrament you make us one family in Christ your Son, one in the sharing of his body and blood, one in the communion of his Spirit. Help us to grow in love for one another and come to the full maturity of the Body of Christ. We ask this in his name. Amen. Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Please rise as you are able for the Blessing The peace of God which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. 16 We sing our final Hymn No. 380 in Common Praise Deacon 1 O worship the King, all glorious above; O gratefully sing his power and his love; our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendour and girded with praise. 2 O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; his chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm. 3 The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old, hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. 4 Thy bountiful care, what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air; it shines in the light; it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain. 5 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail; thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end, our maker, defender, redeemer, and friend. 6 O measureless Might, ineffable Love, while angels delight to hymn thee above, the humbler creation, though feeble their lays, with true adoration shall sing to thy praise. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Postlude Finale from Symphony No 1 L.
